Clarence Thomas, Ethics, meta, right wingnut, troll, trolling, U.S. Supreme Court

In the news:

…In two separate copyright infringement cases concerning the publishing conglomerate Penguin Random House, the high court declined to take up the appeals, with the court saying in 2013 that it wouldn’t hear the first case, and the second case being turned away from the court in 2019 and again in 2020. In both cases, the publisher won at the lower court level, and those decisions stood.

Liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who joined the court in 2009 and has been paid millions of dollars from the publisher over the years, declined to recuse herself in all three instances.

Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch, who joined the court in 2017 and also has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in book deals with the publisher, declined to disqualify himself from the more recent case when it came before the court for consideration…

…the federal law concerning recusal has long been interpreted as applying to stock ownership on the part of the justice or a close family member…

…Breyer, who retired in 2022, likely recused himself from the cases because he owns stock in a company that for a time had a large stake in Penguin…

Roth, whose group has for years kept track of instances in which justices should have recused themselves from a case, said he could not point to other examples where a justice should have disqualified him or herself from a case concerning their book publisher.

Roth noted that Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson also have books in the works….

Too easy.

We’ve been getting more attempted trolling comments submitted in response to Eric Schmitt (r) has serious concerns about the financial dealings of Clarence Thom…oh, wait (May 5, 2023):

And surprise, surprise now we see Sotomeyer has received millions from Random House and refused to recuse herself in their cases! I say so what these Justices haven’t changed the way they would vote on any of these cases! Now if she suddenly voted conservative I would be like wow!

You left out Neil Gorsuch (r). How convenient.

Book contracts and royalties, reported on disclosure forms, or unreported vacations, travel, school tuition, to name just a few, provided by a billionaire. If you’ve got a concern with the former, you should definitely have a serious problem with the latter.

“…Now if she suddenly voted conservative I would be like wow!” As opposed to making a decision based on the law and the merits of the case.

Too easy.

You’ve got to be kidding! All of you. Sorry to tell you this but corruption permeates our government at all levels. Democrat, Republican, all skunks – the bassist opportunist to say they’re out to help us but enrich themselves. Go into elected public service and you will come out a millionaire just like Clinton, Obama, and Biden.

Jared got a $2,000.000.000.00 investment deal. Curiously, you didn’t mention that. So much for non-partisan, eh?

If “corruption permeates our government at all levels” as you assert, the subject of the post alone definitely indicates we’re not kidding.

All of who?

Millionaires? Name them. All of them.

Yesterday we got another attempted trolling comment submitted in response to Elect Mark Alford (r), expect a circus (April 26, 2023), ostensibly in support of the congressman. The subject of Mark Alford (r) does bring out their best work:

The writer of this, stupid and dumb article is obvious a partisan writer. This person needs to be put out of the writers circle. It takes more than a good speller and grammar to make a good reporter. It takes ethics

Writer’s circle? Is that like a union, or something?

Curiously, good spelling and grammar are essential elements when it comes to literary criticism, online or not.

Ethics? It’s way past time to convene a blogger ethics panel. [I am aware of all Internet traditions.]

The Dunning-Krueger Effect demonstrated in 3.7 sentences. A new world record.

“…The writer of this, stupid and dumb article is obvious a partisan writer…” Sleeping in class really paid off there. Obviously.

Do any of you left wingers know that all of the SVB executives got big bonuses before they closed? Also this is all planned. Biden sold us out to the WEF so that they could further their One World digital currency to give them complete control of all of us. Josh Haley is looking out for the American People but the Democrats would rather stick behind a President that can’t even finish a sentence without shuddering or talking complete nonsense. Missouri’s longer-term growth is below average, but largely consistent with the rest of the Midwest

Examining population trends over the past decade offers stronger insight into the long-term population trends shaping Missouri. Since 2010, many of Missouri’s metro and nonmetro areas have not kept pace with many other parts of the country. As a whole, Missouri’s metro counties grew at a slower pace than the nation and in aggregate the state’s nonmetro counties declined a faster rate than nonmetro counties nationwide. Only 11 of the Missouri’s 114 counties and 1 independent city, grew faster than the nation’s annual growth rate. 78 of Missouri’s 114 counties and 1 independent city (68%) had fewer residents in 2020 than they had in 2010; 64 of those counties were in nonmetro areas. The most substantial losses occurred in St. Louis City and St. Louis County, and in the Missouri Bootheel.

Two primary factors—migration (domestic and international) and natural change (births minus deaths)—drive population growth and decline. Overall, the state’s 11,000 net new residents in 2020 marked the smallest annual increase in the past ten years. At the beginning of the decade, Missouri averaged 18,000 to 20,000 more births than deaths, while the state averaged only 10,000 to 12,000 more births than deaths over the second half of the decade. During this latter part of the decade, the diminished rate of natural increase was offset, in part, by positive gains from international migration. Although improving, Missouri experienced net domestic out-migration throughout the decade.

“…Although improving, Missouri experienced net domestic out-migration throughout the decade…”

“…During this latter part of the decade, the diminished rate of natural increase was offset, in part, by positive gains from international migration…”

Ooh, some Chad has concerns: We’d have ham and eggs. If we had some ham and if we had some eggs. (October 19, 2022)

Specifically, this illustration:

From time to time right wingnut concern trolls try to leave comments here. Our system defaults to automatic moderation – that is, comments have to be approved. We don’t allow such comments to be linked to the original post, but on occasion, when we see fit, we’ll mock these attempts.

We see fit.

To wit:

I do think it is very tasteless and very spiteful to use a swastika as a symbol for your organization, you surely could have better teaste.

Ah, there’s no accounting for density. It’s not a reference to our organization, it’s a reference to Josh Hawley (r). Note the direction of the tines and the running theme. You see, Josh Hawley (r) is a right wingnut and a Fascist pig. Watch the video. You can look it up on the Internets for now. Until Josh Hawley (r) gets his way.

What the hell is teaste? Is it one of those words they teach at Yale Law School?

We don’t consider ourselves spiteful when it comes to Josh Hawley (r). It’s more like utter contempt. However, you do you when it comes to projection.

This is what you were probably thinking of:

German Nazi Swastika Flag
National Museum of American History.
Catalog number
1977.0788.03
29 in x 49 in; 73.66 cm x 124.46 cm.

Some additional background, via the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:

The Origins of the Swastika
The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being.” The motif (a hooked cross) appears to have first been used in Eurasia, as early as 7000 years ago, perhaps representing the movement of the sun through the sky. To this day, it is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. It is a common sight on temples or houses in India or Indonesia. Swastikas also have an ancient history in Europe, appearing on artifacts from pre-Christian European cultures.

[….]

Postwar Bans on the Use of the Swastika and Cultural Controversies
Following Nazi Germany’s defeat in 1945, the Allied governments ruling the nation outlawed Nazi organizations. Their symbols and propaganda were removed and further dissemination criminalized. Subsequent German governments continued the ban on Nazi symbols and propaganda, including the swastika. Today in Germany and other European states, public display of Nazi symbols, including on the Internet, is prohibited by law and individuals violating such terms are subject to criminal proceedings.

In the United States, it is legal to display Nazi symbols and propaganda because of the country’s traditions and laws protecting free speech.

At various times and in various nations, the swastika has become a controversial cultural icon. Some motorcycle gangs in the United States beginning in the 1950s wore Nazi insignia to highlight their outlaw nature. In the late 1970s, some punk rock performers and enthusiasts openly displayed the swastika as a symbol of youthful rebellion against the status quo.

Sometimes, Nazi symbols take on neutral or even positive connotations in countries with little or no connection to the history of Nazi ideology and mass murder. The swastika as a symbol of Nazism, other Nazi signs, and even the figure of Adolf Hitler have taken on new life in some countries, where they have come to signify national unity, strength, discipline, anti-colonialism, and law and order. Symbols such as the swastika have a long history. To avoid misunderstanding and misuse, individuals should consider the context and past use of Nazi symbols and symbols in general.

The original artwork for the “running man” came from anonymous street art ostensibly protesting Fascists. We added the color yellow to the background (get it) and flopped the image so that the character was running in the same direction (get it) as Josh Hawley (r) in the U.S. Capitol insurrection video.

Read this slowly, sound out the words if you need to: Josh Hawley (r) is a right wingnut, a Fascist pig, and he runs – hence the illustration fits.

By the way, the IP address and email address of all comments are attached to the original comment in our blog operating system.
