Yesterday, on social media, from Kara Joy:

i went down quite a little rabbit hole earlier, so now you get to, too.

some rich dude recently bought a piece of art, a banana duck taped (no, i will never spell it duct) to canvas. or something. i’m assuming. for 6.2 million bucks. anyhoo, that happened.

then some reporters tracked down the vendor that sold the banana to the artist. told the vendor. the vendor, who sold the banana for 35 cents, broke down. said he’s poor. that he’s never had or seen that kind of money.

then the dude that bought it (it has to be refreshed/replaced every few weeks), had a press conference in hong kong. where he ate the banana. oh, rich people are just so clever and have such silly little funsies!

meanwhile, i keep thinking about how i don’t think that all these peoples out there truly realize all of the nuances and trickle downs and details of what america is going to look like when the republican party, when trump and musk, tanks the economy. they hear, “it’ll be a rough few years, and then everything will be fine,” and they agree. they defend it. they welcome it. and they have no idea of the mass destruction on every level of life that ensues. food, healthcare, jobs, housing… or that they’re not going to be exempt, from the blowback. no matter how strong their allegiance. they have signed up for their oppression. and that is so damn wild to me.

we’re all the banana.

or the vendor… at least for awhile. until we’re all eaten.

Chinese cryptocurrency businessman Justin Sun, who last week purchased a $6.2 million art piece consisting solely of a banana duct taped to a wall, ate the banana on Friday in a move he bragged about on social media.

There have been a few Meta discussions on Bluesky Social:

Jess Piper ‪@piperformissouri.bsky.social‬
I’ve been organizing in rural areas since the first Trump administration. Rural Dems can make the difference in races at the top of the ticket.

Republicans have all of the electorate they’re ever going to have. Organize to turn out 5% to 10% more Dems in rural spaces. Watch what happens…

I replied:

When corporate media bought out local newspapers they cut the costs that provided local content. The irony of a news organization cutting back content shouldn’t escape us. Across the nation there’s been a massive reduction in the local paper capitol press covering the state legislature.

Michael Bersin ‪@michaelbersin.bsky.social‬
As a result, there’s no local accountability for what the local legislator does in the legislative session. At best the now skeletal local paper prints a weekly self-serving propaganda piece authored by the right wing nut leadership under the legislator’s name.

Michael Bersin ‪@michaelbersin.bsky.social‬
This self-replicating echo chamber doesn’t serve anyone locally. When “You did what?” is removed from the constituent conversation all we’re left with is legislative dogma which only serves the powerful few. The ones, who as one candidate put it, “strip our communities for parts.”

Apparently, nature does not abhor a vacuum.

Show Me Progress LLC was founded in August 2007 in association with the Fifty State Blog Project. The blog operated on the Soapblox platform from 2007 to October 2015 with over 10,500 posts in that period.

We cover government and politics in Missouri and the region.

From August 1, 2007 to October 1, 2015 we had 493,874 users, 884,497 sessions, and 1,737,838 page views. Not bad, eh, for an enterprise held together with spit, baling wire and duct tape? That was on the Soapblox platform.

Our current stats on WordPress, since 2015: Views 964,656; Visitors 667,304; Posts 16,747; Comments 12,583 [The posts and comments include those in the Soapblox era which were migrated over with the assistance of Belarus software engineers (we’re not joking – that’s what actually happened).]

As far as we can tell, there aren’t many, if any, survivors from the Fifty State Blog Project era, other than us.

We’re a “Z-list” blog. Our term for our relative place in progressive Blogtopia (yes, Skippy coined the phrase!).

Support in the information landscape for non-corporate progressive outlets is a continuing discussion, especially compared to the “wingnut welfare” on the right. The point being, there is none.

There are “A-list” progressive blogs with substantial readership and great reputations. Balloon Juice; Crooks and Liars; Digby; First Draft; Lawyers, Guns & Money; No More Mister Nice Blog; and The Great Orange Satan, just to name a few.

The thing is, there’s no centralized control nor coordinated messaging. These and many other blogs are self-supporting sources of solid and vetted information. There are no billionaires throwing cash their way. That should tell you something.

A discussion started yesterday on Bluesky:

Pam Spaulding ‪@pamspaulding.bsky.social‬
Back in the early 2000s, you know, when OG bloggers / citizen journalists were trailblazing, that’s when the left could have invested in alt media. Regardless of how popular, influential & necessary we were told our blogs were, there was no investment. So they fell 20 years behind the right. [….]
November 28, 2024 at 6:46 PM

Pam Spaulding ‪@pamspaulding.bsky.social‬
And then OG bloggers saw the right developing its network. Back during early Netroots Nations, the right held a companion conference (RightOnline?). I was invited to one by a conservative colleague (remember, pre-MAGA), many of them were supported — and later became part of the current ecosystem.

Pam Spaulding ‪@pamspaulding.bsky.social‬
Playing catch up is a lot harder than visionary planning long-term. They missed the boat in the early 2000s to get a foothold. Obviously it can be done but as you said, the landscape is more challenging now. It was wide open back in the day.

Practical Dissent: testing, testing…

Faraday bag.

Doesn’t everybody test their protest march/demonstration preparations on a national holiday? Just asking.

“Rule #2: Do not be taken in by small signs of normality. [….] …history has seen many catastrophes, and most of them unfolded over time. That time included periods of relative calm. [….]”
– Autocracy: Rules for Survival – Masha Gessen – November 10, 2016.

We had a discussion at a meeting [last week]. Several of us contributed information from our previous experiences attending peaceful public protests. A few basic safety rules and what you may encounter:

1. Wear practical shoes. Ones you can run in. You might have to stand in place for a long time, too. Filp-flops and heels don’t cut it.

2. Wear comfortable/practical clothing. Wear long pants. Dress for the weather. Wear a practical hat (like a Tilley hat).

3. Go with a friend/friends. Share your phone numbers. Let someone who isn’t attending know that you’ll be at that demonstration.

4. Review principles of-non-violence before attending a demonstration.

5. Park upwind from the demonstration, several blocks, or further away. You may not be able to rely on the GPS on your phone, so familiarize yourself with the lay of the land beforehand.

6. Do not take a bulky bag. Some people take small fanny packs. Take your phone, your ID, cash, and your car keys. A bandana could prove to be useful. A bottle of water, too. That’s it.

The exceptions are protest medics – they wear red crosses – (yes, they exist) and news media/documentarians – usually wearing outlet media credentials. They usually wear backpacks appropriate for their gear.

DO NOT take anything to a demonstration that you’re not willing to let go of forever. Like your children. Seriously, in these times infants and school age children should not be at a demonstration. Period. Independent teenagers, sure, maybe, depending on their maturity. You know your kid(s) best, it’s your call.

7. Pay attention to demonstration marshals – if there are marshals at a demonstration they wear armbands. They are there for your safety – they do go through safety and de-escalation training. Stay off the street – in most jurisdictions this will get you arrested.

8. Don’t expect access to a restroom. Plan accordingly.

9. If you’re planning on attending protests in the near future (there will be plenty of opportunities), consider purchasing a small Faraday bag suitable for your phone so it can’t be tracked.

10. Make a protest sign. Posterboard, usually 22 x 28. 4 to 6 inch block lettering, solid color fill. Permanent ink only, water soluble ink smears and leaves evidence on your hands and clothes. Stick letters are unreadable at any distance. Anything longer than a short sentence is unreadable. Nobody can or wants to read a dissertation on 22 x 28 posterboard.

If things go south, drop your sign and leave. If you’re wearing a protest t-shirt, zip up or button up your outer coat. “I was minding my own business, just watching.”

11. If it looks bad, leave. Trust your instincts. If it doesn’t feel right, leave.

12. If you’re speaking at a rally, keep it short. Then shorten it even more.

13. If you’re marching, participate in the chants.

If the police are present, start a chant, “Higher pay for our police.”

14. Memorize these phrases:

A) “Am I under arrest?”
B) “Am I free to go?”
C) “Officer, there’s a crowd looting the Kroger’s over on the next block!”

Say nothing else.

15. Stay away from the Anarchists (yes, they exist). They are there to cause trouble. They will try to incite confrontation. They are assholes.

16. If shit gets real and you can’t get out of there, find the Antifa, if they’re present, they will put their bodies on the line to protect others.

[17.] “…don’t engage with counterprotestors.”

[18.] “…DO NOT bring any weapons, open carry or concealed, to a street protest/demonstration.”

[19.] 99.9% of all peaceful demonstrations stay that way. Expect and hope for the best, plan for the worst.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey (r) issued an opinion on the passage of Amendment 3 (women’s reproductive health and abortion rights) which passed on the November ballot.

State of Missouri – General Election, November 05, 2024
Unofficial Results
as of 11/27/2024 2:54:01 PM

Constitutional Amendment 3 3572 of 3572 Precincts Reported
YES 1,527,096 51.605%
NO 1,432,084 48.395%
Total Votes: 2,959,180

The letter:

AGOpinionMissouri22-2024

[….]

…This opinion letter provides an assessment of the legal effect of Amendment 3 on five statutes. Although the Secretary of State has note yet certfied the results of the election, the unofficial results show that Amendment 3 was adopted – just barely – by a margin of 3%. In contest where the “yes” side was able in effect to rewrite the ballot summary language, received tens of millions in funding from out of state, and outspent the “no” side 6 to 1, this tight margin suggests the result may be very different if a future constitutional amendment is put up for a vote…

[….]

3.21%.

Donald Trump won the popular vote – just barely – by a margin of 1.6%. Now what, Andrew?

Missouri courts effectively stated you were a moron. Rewrite that.

Out-of-state money? How convenient. Citizens United finally bites you all in the ass.

Outspent 6 to 1? Someone wanted it more, eh?

What a tool.
