35. Witness 1 testified that Greitens then said, “You’re not going to mention my name. Don’t even mention my name to anybody at all, because if you do, I’m going to take these pictures, and I’m going to put them everywhere I can. They are going to be everywhere, and then everyone will know what a little whore you are.”39
[….]

[….]the Missouri Ethics Commission fined Governor Eric Greitens (r) and his campaign $1,000.00 for a campaign reporting violation. According to the Missouri Ethics Commission at some point [pdf] in early 2015 the Greitens campaign received a donor list which it did not initially report and which was used by someone in the campaign to contact potential donors.[….]

Eric Greitens (r) [2016 file photo].

From Eric Greitens (r):

Eric Greitens
[….]
Two months ago, a prosecutor brought a case against me.
She claimed she had evidence of a crime—but she’s produced none.
She said her investigator would find the truth. Instead, her investigator lied under oath and created false evidence.
She is wasting thousands and thousands of taxpayer dollars to do all of this.
Her original case is falling apart—so today, she’s brought a new one. By now, everyone knows what this is: this prosecutor will use any charge she can to smear me.
Thank goodness for the Constitution and our court system. In the United States of America, you’re innocent until proven guilty. In the United States of America, you get your day in court.
And when I have my day in court, I will clear my name. People will know the truth.
The latest charge is about my work at the Mission Continues. When I came home from Iraq after service as a Navy SEAL, I started the Mission Continues to help veterans. In the seven years I ran that organization, we helped thousands of veterans, won national awards for excellence, and became one of the finest veteran’s charities in the country.
Those were some of the best years of my life, and I am grateful every day for the chance to help the men and women I served with. I stand by that work.
I will have my day in court. I will clear my name. This prosecutor can come after me with everything she’s got, but as all faithful people know: in time comes the truth. And the time for truth is coming.

Keep talking.

Late this morning:

BREAKING: AG Hawley says he has uncovered a potential felony violation by Gov. Greitens and turned evidence over to @stlcao. The violation is related to his nonprofit, The Mission Continues.
10:53 AM – 17 Apr 2018

Whereupon Missouri government and politics Twitter blew up.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) [2017 file photo].

A press release from Senator Claire McCaskill’s (D) U.S. Senate campaign:

April 17, 2018 Press Releases
McCaskill for Missouri Statement on Hawley Press Conference Regarding Statute of Limitations for Greitens’ Use of The Mission Continues Donor List

MISSOURI — McCaskill for Missouri Communications Director Meira Bernstein released the following statement on Attorney General Josh Hawley’s press conference today, during which he claimed that the statute of limitations is approaching on Governor Greitens’ use of The Mission Continues donor list:

“We’re glad that Hawley has come out of hiding to acknowledge the existing evidence of criminal behavior of the Governor. However, the sad truth is that this shows gross incompetence on the part of the Attorney General. The evidence in this case has been publicly available since October 2016 — what excuse could Josh Hawley possibly have for failing to pursue an investigation and allowing this evidence to languish for over a year? The only reason the statute of limitations is now a problem in this case is because Hawley was trying to protect his friend and large donor for as long as possible.”

Background:

October 10, 2016: Press reports that Greitens used a donor list from his charity, The Mission Continues, to solicit donations for his campaign.

April 28, 2017: Greitens is fined by the Missouri Ethics Commission and admits wrongdoing for his use of the charity donor list.

February 27, 2018: Press reports that St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner may be looking into the Governor’s use of the charity donor list.

March 1, 2018: Press reports confirm that St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner is looking into the Governor’s use of the charity donor list.

March 1, 2018: Hawley announces he is investigating Greitens’ use of the charity donor list after press reports confirm the prosecuting attorney’s investigation, despite declining to investigate for nearly a year.

Attorney General, General Assembly, HB 1347, Josh Hawley, missouri

[….]
Senator McCaskill (D): Well, it would be hard not to follow it. The law is pretty clear. There’s never been an Attorney General in the history of our state that hasn’t lived in Jefferson City because the law says shall. He’s, listen, I’m a Mizzou educated lawyer, but I can keep up. [laughter] And I know what the word shall means in the law. Now I know he went to Yale, I think, or Harvard, one of those, one of those fancy ones. Um, I think they taught him the same thing, shall is shall. So if it’s shall then you must live in Jefferson City. And you are not legally entitled to vote somewhere other than where you live. Oh there’s a problem here.
[….]

Today was the first day to pre-file bills for the session of the Missouri General Assembly which starts in January 2018.

Josh Hawley (r) [2016 file photo].

It appears that Attorney General (and republican U.S. Senate candidate) Josh Hawley (r) has a bill that may address his living arrangements in some fashion:

HB 1347
Changes the law regarding the residency requirement for the attorney general
Sponsor: Shumake, Lindell (005)
Proposed Effective Date: 8/28/2018
LR Number: 4373H.01I
Last Action: 12/01/2017 – Prefiled (H)
Bill String: HB 1347
[….]

We can’t wait to get a look at the bill text once it becomes available. We’ll keep checking.

Here’s the thing – if republicans have always believed this wasn’t an issue, then why file the bill?

They can’t have it both ways.

Attorney General, Josh Hawley, missouri, Supeme Court, U.S

Josh Hawley (r) [2016 file photo].

In today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision [pdf] in TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH OF COLUMBIA, INC. v. COMER, DIRECTOR, MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES:

[….]
3. This case involves express discrimination based on religious identity with respect to playground resurfacing. We do not address religious uses of funding or other forms of discrimination.
[….]

A press release today from Attorney General Josh Hawley (r):

MO AG Josh Hawley: Religious Liberty Wins Today
Jun 26, 2017, 09:48 AM
Jefferson City, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley issued the following statement following today’s ruling by the United States Supreme Court in favor of Missouri’s Trinity Lutheran Church. The Supreme Court ruled today in a 7-2 decision that Trinity Lutheran Church could not be denied state grant money simply because of its status as a religious organization.
“Today is a great day for Missouri’s Trinity Lutheran Church, and an even better day for religious freedom in America. With today’s ruling, the United States Supreme Court has made clear that the First Amendment does not permit government to discriminate against churches or religious organizations on the basis of faith. People of faith cannot be treated like second-class citizens. Governor Jay Nixon’s administration was wrong to interpret Missouri’s Constitution to require such unlawful discrimination. Today’s decision means discrimination of this kind will never be permitted again in the state of Missouri, or anywhere.”

“…Today’s decision means discrimination of this kind will never be permitted again in the state of Missouri, or anywhere.”

When it comes to playground resurfacing.

I’d be good with this if all religious institutions paid taxes.

amendment 2, Attorney General, campaign contribution limits, campaign finance, Josh Hawley, missouri

Last November:

State of Missouri – 2016 General Election – November 8, 2016
Official Results
As announced by the Board of State Canvassers on December 12, 2016

Office/Candidate Name Party Votes % of Votes
Constitutional Amendment 2 3238 of 3238 Precincts Reported
YES 1,894,870 69.95%
NO 814,016 30.05%
Total Votes: 2,708,886

Which resulted in this, in the Missouri Constitution:

Article VIII
SUFFRAGE AND ELECTIONS
Section 23
November 14, 2016

Section 23. 1. This section shall be known as the “Missouri Campaign Contribution Reform Initiative.”
2. The people of the state of Missouri hereby find and declare that excessive campaign contributions to political candidates create the potential for corruption and the appearance of corruption; that large campaign contributions made to influence election outcomes allow wealthy individuals, corporations and special interest groups to exercise a disproportionate level of influence over the political process; that the rising costs of campaigning for political office prevent qualified citizens from running for political office; that political contributions from corporations and labor organizations are not necessarily an indication of popular support for the corporation’s or labor organization’s political ideas and can unfairly influence the outcome of Missouri elections; and that the interests of the public are best served by limiting campaign contributions, providing for full and timely disclosure of campaign contributions, and strong enforcement of campaign finance requirements.
3. (1) Except as provided in subdivisions (2), (3) and (4) of this subsection, the amount of contributions made by or accepted from any person other than the candidate in any one election shall not exceed the following:
(a) To elect an individual to the office of governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, state auditor, attorney general, office of state senator, office of state representative or any other state or judicial office, two thousand six hundred dollars.
(2) (a) No political party shall accept aggregate contributions from any person that exceed twenty-five thousand dollars per election at the state, county, municipal, district, ward, and township level combined.
(b) No political party shall accept aggregate contributions from any committee that exceed twenty-five thousand dollars per election at the state, county, municipal, district, ward, and township level combined.
[….]

There’s more there. Look it up.

Which prompted this, in federal court:

Free and Fair Election Fund et al v. Missouri Ethics Commission et al (May 5, 2017) [pdf]

Today, from Attorney General Josh Hawley (r):

AG Hawley Announces Amendment 2 Appeal
May 30, 2017, 11:42 AM
Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Joshua Hawley announced today that his office has appealed the federal district court’s judgment in the Amendment 2 case. That judgment invalidates portions of Missouri’s Constitutional Amendment 2 that impose restrictions on political campaign contributions. Amendment 2 was approved by nearly 70 percent of the voters in November 2016.
“As Attorney General, I have a duty to defend the laws and constitution of the State of Missouri,” Hawley said. “The people of Missouri overwhelmingly voted to place these rules in our constitution, and my office will defend them.”

Interesting.

Stay tuned.
