Families can already choose. If they want an exclusive school and not a public school they have a choice to pay for it.

Taxpayer funds shouldn’t be used for homeschooling or private schools. And rural people don’t have any option other than severely underfunded public schools.

School choice is just that: Schools choose their students. Parents choice is limited to schools that will accept their child. Public schools have to serve every student , private schools can refuse to admit a child for any reason they choose (generally excludes kids with mental or physical disability, low academic performance, misbehavior, parents religious beliefs, sexual orientation of child or parent
). Families in rural areas have little to no choice as there is no nearby private school. Public money is for educating the public, not just selected groups. Public schools are accountable for government money and student performance, private schools are not. Missouri’s public schools are underfunded based on the state’s own funding formula yet it found 60 MILLION $ to pay for private school tuition.

A vote for mark Alford is a vote for Donald Trump

Keep the money in public schools, where they are needed most to ensure all children can get an education. Trying to privatize it to put more money into the wealthy pockets is not “for the people”

Vouchers are for private education only. According to the Herzog foundation a household of 4 can make up to $178,433 to qualify for voucher money. A household of 4 making $61,051 makes too much for reduced public school lunch. Also, the state again today voted to decrease public school funding even more. Over 80% of our kids attend public school. Thanks for your continued non support of public education.

Here’s your education on how this works dumb dumb, as if you dont know. You give parents a voucher to go seek an education wherever that family chooses. Private institutions will simply raise tuition rates to continue to keep out undesirable students or close registration because they cant handle the influx. Urban districts will see a mass exodus to neighboring district that also won’t be able to handle the influx and will shutter neighborhood schools in KC and St Louis. Lastly, private schools do not have to honor IEP’s or 504’s for students that need these accommodations, again forcing them to get a compromised education or stay in a situation that their public school has already been defunded. I terms that you understand, “vouchers bad”, free, funded public education good…

Let me choose where my tax dollars are going to! Not private schools!

Every family can choose. Not every family has choices in their area. As you are a representative to rural Missourians, you should probably understand that already.

Study after study has shown the primary beneficiaries of vouchers are already enrolled in private schools.

So when are the debates going to be Mark?

There are Lots of little towns that are held together by their public school in Alfords district. Once they are gone, the town will go with it. Nobody will build a private school in Osceola, niangua, fair play, or rich hill. Those towns would dry up and blow away without their local public school.

Make America educational ranking continue to plummet -as GOP destroys standards. Are we great yet?

Families have always had the right to choose. They’ve been doing it for decades. You’re creating a problem to justify funneling public funds to Christian schools for affluent families.

The only “education freedom” Alford seeks is the freedom for the wealthy to get tax payer funds to help send their kids to private schools while everyone else has their schools underfunded and their kids can’t get a proper education.

I think you’ve done enough to derail education for the day. Maybe give it a rest and come back tomorrow.

The president of the United States should never involve himself with voting districts of any state. My interpretation of the Missouri Constitution regarding voting districts is that they are changed after a U.S. census which happens every ten years and the voting districts were just in 2022 following the 2020 census.

They are appointed by the sitting governor (chosen from among three put forward by an independent commission) and then face a statewide retention vote by Missouri voters in a general election. All seven sitting Missouri Supreme Court judges have been retained by the voters, two have been retained twice.

The decision by the supreme court was UNANIMOUS. This means that ALL the judges agreed on the decision. If voters were disenfranchised with the use of the new map in the primary it is entirely the fault of the Secretary of State and the Attorney general who decided to go ahead with the new maps even in the face of the referendum petition. They are responsible for the fiasco.

In 1942, a constitutional amendment bearing the title “Nonpartisan Selection of Judges” was placed on the ballot and approved by a majority of the voters. The amendment applied only to judges of the Supreme Court, the three regional courts of appeal, and the circuit courts in the City of St. Louis and Jackson County. In later years, the voters of St. Louis County, Clay County, and Platte County have chosen to select their circuit and associate circuit judges in the same manner. The method of selection provided for in the 1940 amendment has been known as the “Missouri Plan.” It has been copied in whole and in part by quite a few states.
The selection is non partisan…

And his claim that judicial intervention in congressional maps is unprecedented is simply false.
The Court did not create this mess. Denny Hoskins sat on the petitions for nearly eight months and waited until the final deadline to reject them.
The Constitution belongs to the people, Senator. Not the Legislature. Not the Republican Party. The people.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when the courts initially upheld the maps, they also said that the referendum could go forward. The fact that this had it’s day in court now is because Hoskins played games and waited until the primaries to refuse to certify. The MO Supreme Court even cautioned him against running down the clock on the hearings. This is Hoskin’s fault.
Also, what do you call ignoring 300,000 signatures saying we want our say first? Because that sounds a lot more like disenfranchising voters than people who lost out on a primary vote. Especially one that ran out of Democratic ballots in multiple locations. If Republicans had any confidence in their own party, they wouldn’t need these maps, these stupid certifying games, or to try and plant drugs on their opponents. Worry about that first, Bratin.

Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins blocked a public vote on the state’s new congressional map Tuesday, declaring a referendum petition unconstitutional a few hours before polls closed in the primary election.

He refused to tell reporters at a Jefferson City press conference whether the petition had enough valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot. It didn’t matter, he said, because the Missouri Constitution does not allow a referendum on redistricting.

“Whether they had one signature or 500 million signatures doesn’t really matter because they are unconstitutional,” Hoskins said at a news conference.

The political action committee People Not Politicians turned in more than 300,000 signatures in December, and local election authorities spent hundreds of hours verifying whether the people who signed were registered voters.

Lets teach the constitution cause the government seems to have misplaced their copy. Prayers belongs in churches and teaching belongs in schools.

We aren’t “one nation under god,” so of course we shouldn’t “bring prayer back to school.”

I started public school in the 50’s. we never had prayer in school back then. Alford doesn’t know what he is talking about or is hoping no one is old enough to remember we did not have “back in the day” so he can try and put it in now. We prayed in our home even though it wasn’t in our school. Seemed to work just fine.

I found it annoying being forced to go to church as a kid. I would’ve been even more annoyed to deal with it 6 days a week instead of just 1. I probabaly would’ve turned even more of an atheist if I was forced to engage in that.

No one ever stopped prayer in schools. The courts stopped MANDATED PRAYER in school. That is quite a different matter, friends. I don’t want to sound humorous but believers have always prayed – before a test, when a sitting in the principals office, before a big game. No one will stop a child. Students at Missouri school are allowed prayer time during Ramadan for example and the administration supports it. Students are allowed to have Christian Fellowship groups that pray together. Moments of silence occur in response to tragic events. However there are no times in a public school when teachers are required to lead a prayer while everyone prays along.

Prayer is in schools, you can pray literally anywhere, but school isn’t the place to evangelize. Student led prayer like “see you at the pole” is already widely practiced in Missouri. Let’s keep organization-led prayer in the churches where it belongs and put education and academic rigor back in schools.

Nope. Anyone can say a silent prayer to whichever God they believe in at any time of the day in school. Lord knows I said plenty of them in my 30+ years in education. But organized, school sponsored prayer is not appropriate and violates the Constitution.

Pray for each child to have a meal during the school day, pray for a supportive, trained and fairly paid staff, pray for the resources needed to educate and train students, pray for secure and safe environments where students feel at ease, pray for common sense gun laws to ensure that it happens and pray for parents to have morals, be unselfish and practical when it comes to the needs of all students, not just theirs. How about that?
