LGBTQIA+, Lieutenant Governor, missouri, Pride Festival, Richard Brown, Warrensburg

Last Saturday the annual Warrensburg Pride Festival took place at the same venue as last year. The well-attended family friendly event included vendors, information, activities, entertainment, music, discussions, speeches, swag, food (and an outdoor food truck!). There were protesters.

Several statewide and local Democratic Party candidates attended and spoke at the event.

House Assistant Minority Leader Richard Brown (D), a candidate for Lieutenant Governor, attended, spoke to the crowd, and visited one-on-one with attendees.

Richard Brown (D): [….] But here’s why I’m running for the job. Because that’s exactly what it is. It’s a job, it’s not a title.

[….]

There are constitutional and statutory duties that the Lieutenant Governor does in the State of Missouri. When we talk about the constitutional duties, you know, we tend to think about the Lieutenant Governor is the next person in line in case something happens to the Governor. Okay, well, Crystal [Quade (D)] looks to be in good health, so I’m not worried about it. She’s been in great health the whole time I’ve been her assistant, I’ve never worried about it. Okay.

The Lieutenant Governor also presides over the Senate. Okay. That’s important. That’s important. When you have the gavel in your hand you can control how things flow in that house, in that chamber. And we, as Democrats, we have learned over the last few years that some of our, sometimes our best offense is defense. We stop a lot of bad stuff from happening because we can slow things down. And so, that’s so important to have that gavel in my hand.

[….]

We are going to when this election. I don’t care how much money the other guy has. That money is not going to wash you clean with the women who are coming to the polls to overturn the abortion ban when you voted for the ban, when you voted to make no exceptions for rape and incest, when you voted to defund Planned Parenthood. I don’t care how much money you have, it will not wash you clean with those women who are coming to the polls. [applause, cheers]

.

Elad Gross (D): [….] As Attorney General I will start Missouri’s first civil rights division in the history of our state. It’s about damn time that we have one [applause]. Twenty other, at least twenty other, twenty-eight other states have one. Most states have one, including the, uh, vaunted Democratic capital of Oklahoma. I mean, come on, like, we need to have one. Okay? And we need to protect our rights, we need to protect our rights to reproductive freedom, which we will put in the state Constitution this November [applause]. We need to protect our rights on the job, we need to protect our rights in education, we need to protect our rights in public housing.

And I know that the state legislature refuses to pass the Missouri Non-discrimination Act, or MONA, which is a statute that would say you cannot discriminate against folks because they’re gay, because they’re a member of the LGBTQ community.

Well, I’ll tell you what. Whether or not they want to pass that law we are going to enforce that right. Because that is the right that every American and every Missourian already has. And our civil rights division will make sure that right is protected here in the State of Missouri [applause].

[….]

I think we need an Attorney General who represents the people of the State of Missouri, not big government, not big corporations that are paying for them, but for you and your family. And as your Attorney General I will get that office working for you again.

It’s about time that your rights are protected in our state and it’s about time that those folks who want to take ’em away suffer the consequences. So, we’ve got a lot of folks that we got to get elected, we got a whole lot of folks that we got to start suing, and I would be honored to be your next Attorney General to do that.

[….]

Crystal Quade (D): [….] What I want you all to know is, um, we have a lot at stake in 2024. And, and I appreciate the time to talk about politics in this space because, unfortunately, they have made every space about politics. They did that. But since they did we’re gonna take advantage of that and also do that.

Because what’s going on this year, for folks who may not know, we have an opportunity in the fall to take back reproductive freedom in our state, because [applause], yes, let’s clap for that, because we had over 380,000 people sign a piece of paper saying, ‘You have gone too far, and this is too extreme for my state.’ So we have that opportunity.

We have an opportunity to raise the minimum wage and give mandatory earned sick leave to everyone in the State of Missouri. [applause] Huge. [applause]

We also have an opportunity to get rid of Josh Hawley [r]. [cheers, applause]

We have an opportunity to take back the Governor’s mansion. [cheers, applause] And, as mentioned, we are so very close to breaking the Republican super-majority in the state House and Senate. We need to flip three seats red to blue. As in my time as leader we’ve already flipped six, so flipping three is gonna be real easy. [applause] But what that means is that when I’m Governor and they file the next nonsense that they do, I can veto it and we can uphold that veto and it will not become law.

Missouri is a place that I know everyone here feels it, that often feels like there’s no way out, and sometimes can feel very overwhelming. But what I hope that you all know about this election cycle is we actually have an opportunity to pull Missouri back on track and be a state where folks feel safe and welcome to be here.

A Warrensburg, Missouri – ordinance:

Sec. 14-65. – Trespass.
A person commits the offense of trespass if they enter unlawfully or remain unlawfully upon the real property of another. This is an offense of absolute liability.

(Code 1970, § 16-20; Ord. No. 5307, § 1, 2-13-17)

Apparently one of the anti-Warrensburg Pride Festival protesters got upset about being asked to leave the venue parking lot. It’s private property. It was a private event. She wasn’t a guest. She was trespassing.

A sequence of five images:

There’s a shitstorm of anguish on the great injustice of it all posted on social media by the usual suspects.

What kind of maroon shows up to protest at an event that has consistently been subjected to serious violent threats over the years, has hired armed private security, where the local police are present, and then expects to park on the private property that she’s protesting? Someone who truly believes…in her privilege. She was lucky she wasn’t arrested.

Don’t fall asleep in school, kids.

Yesterday at the annual Warrensburg Pride Festival protesters with signs gathered on the property and across the street.

Tautology, sort of:

The kerning needs a little work.

You don’t like drag shows? Don’t attend. Nobody else really cares about your aesthetic judgment.

After that, they’re on their own. Not enough space on the shirt to get in the stuff about feeding the hungry and housing the homeless.

I’m pretty sure none of mine are anywhere close to capital offenses in any reasonable interpretation. Though there is that polyester and cotton thing.

The ACLU:

“….Taking photographs and video of things that are plainly visible in public spaces is a constitutional right….”

“….When in public spaces where you are lawfully present you have the right to photograph anything that is in plain view….”

And, if you can spell, don’t bother. You think he got upset when passersby didn’t honk? Just asking.

Yesterday the annual Warrensburg Pride Festival took place at the same venue as last year. The well-attended family friendly event included vendors, information, activities, entertainment, music, discussions, speeches, swag, food (and an outdoor food truck!). And protesters.

An event sponsor’s flags in the parking lot, near the entrance.

One view, inside.

Raymond James (D) and Crystal Quade (D).

At the panel discussion:

Outside:

Private event security and Warrensburg Police in the parking lot.

Another view, outside.

Ironic, on so many levels.

The protesters were apparently from one group. Several were across the street, but a few stood in the venue property.

Take it across the street and off private property.

Attempting to debate with a Warrensburg Police Officer.

The officer wasn’t buying it. “There’s nothing going on in there. I was there last year.”

Yep. June 3, 2023:

The annual Warrensburg Pride Festival is in progress.

The usual suspects are across the street.

Talking to the Warrensburg Police.

He wanted to stand on the side of the street of the entrance to the venue.

Name the band.

Uh, most of humanity believes people are people.

But, don’t honk if you can spell.

Season’s Greetings!

They’re missing show tunes! Pop Music! Fancy Costumes! Vendors! Information!

On Monday evening, June 12th, the Warrensburg, Missouri City Council convened for a regularly scheduled meeting. In contrast to the two previous meetings the gallery, while populated, was not packed. The large contingent of hand-wringing pearl-clutching bigots at the previous city council meetings did not appear to be in attendance.

During the public comment portion of the agenda:

.

…Today I address you as a private citizen. First and foremost, I must apologize. I’ve not been as available to the public in my role as DIC [Warrensburg Diversity & Inclusion Commission] Chair I’ve been preoccupied and, thusly, unaware of some circumstances that transpired at our annual Pride Month event that was held on June 3rd. Specifically, the clear and present danger of threats of violence made against citizens of our community in a direct effort to instill fear and prevent rightful citizens from creating a more inclusive and safer place for the LGBTQIA+ community.

As this meeting marks our city’s resolve to commit to being the community of inclusion, I wish to publicly condemn threats of violence against other groups within our community.

I will not relitigate the events of the past, nor will I engage in a circular debate about beliefs or ideology. This is for another time.

What I offer instead is a reminder to all about our fundamental American beliefs in tolerating the opinions of other. And engaging in peaceful protest or debate with people who hold different views than our own.

Fear, threats of violence, and plans to commit violence to submit others into compliance are tools of Fascists, extremists, and terrorists. They are un-American.

We must be mindful of the tactics we use to express our outrage and our viewpoints. Thus, we embrace the ideals that we as Americans have sworn to defend against.

To members of the LGBTQIA+ community on attendance and those streaming online, and for those of you here, I’d hope you’d tell them the same, I will not tell that the journey to equality will be peaceful, simple, and trouble free. They may already know this by now. Instead, what I will share with you is that you are loved, you have a right to exist, to be heard, and to be treated justly as every other person who calls Warrensburg home.

There are many in our community who would stand behind you to propel your fight forward, others who will stand by your side to march with you towards equality, and there are others, like me, who will stand in front of you to embrace and shield you from the hate, vitriol, abuse, ignorance, and fearmongering.

You are not alone. Continue to inspire change. Continue to embrace the struggle, resist, and confront ignorance. Break down barriers.

In time we may be able to be part of a more inclusive world, but at the very least we can create one for those who follow after us.

Happy Pride Month.

Thank you all for your time.

[applause]
