Rep. Vicky Hartzler @RepHartzler
The Supreme Court sent a strong message today that religious freedom will not be imperiled in America.

No one should have to choose between their job and practicing their faith. #SCOTUS

Some of the responses:

1/ Really? No one should have to choose between their job and practicing their faith.

If I firmly believe before the day begins, everyone must pray to my God so that our work is good and safe. And, people who don’t pray my way are not good people and must be fired.

2/ What should people do: if they are told this mandatory prayer is not in the interest of the company and if they insist on such a prayer they are fired, be fired for their beliefs or not follow their beliefs?

3/ In this country so far, you do not have the religious freedom to shove your beliefs down anyone’s throat and if people resist your beliefs, they should not be fired or harassed.

Sarcasm.

Correction: The Supreme Court sent a strong message today that we Christian theocrats have the religious freedom to shove our beliefs onto everyone in public places.

But he didn’t have to choose Vick, that’s the whole point. “The district said that some students felt pressured into taking part and that it offered alternative, less public places to pray after games.” Kennedy choose to defy that. Freedom comes with responsibility, period!
[….]

If I do something and my boss doesn’t like it, he tells me to stop and I do it anyway, I’m fired, that’s how it works. You GQPs made all these “at will” states and yet gripe when someone exercises it. Plus they offered accommodations, he chose to sue for 15-minutes of fame.

Fixed it:
“The Supreme Court sent a strong message today that Christian proselytizing will not be imperiled in America.”

You are a Christofascist. This isn’t your church. This is our country.

Serious question. Would you support a Muslim coach praying? Or someone else who isn’t Christian? I’ll wait.

Only yesterday she spoke our in favor of (another) Supreme Court decision that enforces Christian religious doctrine over the entire country. But you already know the answer to that.

Faith is not part of our government. Faith, civics and politics are separate entities. Can’t believe you don’t know that.

If a white man can kneel and pray in public (and be protected by a SCOTUS who CLEARLY does not represent a majority of US citizens), then so can those of us who kneel in protest. #ColinKaepernick

Pressuring students to pray with you is not religious freedom.

Kids shouldn’t be forced to pray by an authoritarian figure who decides play time

No is being denied their rights if they cant pray on a school football field – that is why we have church lady

We have entered an era of Christo fascism in this country.

Long before now.

So a white man can kneel and demonstrate what he believes in, but a black man can’t? Hypocrite. #ColinKaepernick

The problem with your position is that YOUR expression of religious freedom results in someone else’s coercion to comply (at worst) and possible shaming/bullying of non-Christian students (at best). It may be YOUR idea of freedom, but it stomps on other people’s rights.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

Performative faith.

Uh, you voiced support for DJT’s proposed Muslim ban, Vic.

It’s been a long road to now

GOVERNOR PARSON SIGNS PROCLAMATION TO END ELECTIVE ABORTIONS IN MISSOURI IN RESPONSE TO U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION

JEFFERSON CITY — Today, in response to the United States Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, Governor Mike Parson signed a proclamation giving legal effect to Section 188.017 RSMo and activating the “Right to Life of the Unborn Child Act.”

“Nothing in the text, history, or tradition of the United States Constitution gave un-elected federal judges authority to regulate abortion. We are happy that the U.S. Supreme Court has corrected this error and returned power to the people and the states to make these decisions,” Governor Parson said.

“With Roe v. Wade overturned and statutory triggers provided in HB 126, we are issuing this proclamation to restore our state authority to regulate abortion and protect life. Thanks to decades of conservative leaders, Missouri has become one of the most pro-life states in the nation, and our Administration has always fought for the life of every unborn child. Today, our efforts have produced what generations of Missourians have worked and prayed for: Today, we have won our fight to protect innocent life,” Governor Parson continued.

Governor Parson’s proclamation notifies the Missouri Revisor of Statutes of the effective date of Section 188.017 RSMo.

Section 188.017, or the “Right to Life of the Unborn Child Act,” includes several provisions:

Prohibits doctors from performing abortions unless there is a medical emergency;

Creates criminal liability for any person who knowingly performs or induces a non-medical emergency abortion and subjects his or her professional license to suspension; and

Protects any woman who receives an illegal abortion from being prosecuted in violation of the Act.

The “Right to Life of the Unborn Child Act” was included in HB 126 and contingent upon the U.S. Supreme Court overruling Roe v. Wade in whole or in part. Governor Parson signed HB 126 in 2019.

Today:

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt Becomes First to Issue Opinion Following SCOTUS Opinion in Dobbs, Effectively Ending Abortion in Missouri
Jun 24, 2022, 09:22 AM by AG Schmitt

Following the Supreme Court of the United States’ ruling in Dobbs that overturns Roe v. Wade, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt today issued an opinion to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes that “triggers” parts of Missouri’s House Bill 126, effectively ending abortion in the State of Missouri. Missouri is the first state in the country to do so.

“Today, following the United States Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, with the issuance of an attorney general opinion, my Office has yet again reinforced Missouri’s dedication to protecting the sanctity of life, both born and unborn. With this attorney general opinion, my Office has effectively ended abortion in Missouri, becoming the first state in the country to do so following the Court’s ruling,” said Attorney General Schmitt. “My Office has been fighting to uphold the sanctity of life since I became attorney general, culminating in today’s momentous court ruling and attorney general opinion. I will continue the fight to protect all life, born and unborn.”

Section B of HB126 states, “The enactment of section 188.017 of this act shall only become effective upon notification to the revisor of statutes by an opinion by the attorney general of Missouri…”

And Section 188.017 that is “triggered” by an attorney general’s opinion states, in part, “Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, no abortion shall be performed or induced upon a woman, except in cases of medical emergency…”

Thus, with the opinion from the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, abortion, except in cases of medical emergency, is now outlawed in the State of Missouri.

The opinion states, “By issuing this Attorney General Opinion No. 22-2022 and providing it directly to you, I hereby provide notification to the Revisor of Statutes, pursuant to § 188.017.4(1), that the United States Supreme Court has overruled, in whole or in part, Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), restoring or granting to the state of Missouri the authority to regulate abortion to the extent set forth in § 188.017, RSMo, and that as a result, it is reasonably probable that § 188.017 would be upheld by the court as constitutional.”

[….]

The Attorney General’s Opinion No. 22-2022:

“…Missouri is the first state in the country to do so…”

That’s going to be some campaign slogan for Eric Schmitt (r): “I’m quick on the trigger.”

Sixteen minutes later Eric Schmitt (r) provided a prickly response:

“Big mistake. Big. Huge…”

Some of the responses:

Finally, @Eric_Schmitt speaks directly to Missouri’s women voters.
His message, packaged as an insult:
“Enjoy your baking.”

Awww, did someone with some clout and an actual former Senator call you on your #Bullschmitt ?

Poor little thing, you can ignore us all day long, but she says something and you’ve got to reply. And at 4:17pm, on a workday/weekday that’s still our time and our dime Eric!

Except Claire for better or worse actually got stuff done and didn’t support a political movement that tried to overthrow the government to install authoritarianism, Eric. You cannot say the same.

Mr. Schmitt, in order to insult Claire, she must first value your opinion. Nice try, though.

Are you EVER going to do some of the work we pay the MO Attorney General to do? I mean, when you’re not busy suing China, micro-managing public schools, bullying beloved Missourians?

Most people running for office would be smart enough not to tell a woman to get in the kitchen.

There’s that.

She did win election to the Senate, which is more than you’ll do.

She was a US Senator, and you are going to come in third in a primary so I dunno man sounds like you’re punching up pretty far here.

Bullschmitt is triggered. LOL.

Ooh, Claire triggered Eric!!

You actually have to attack someone who’s not even in the race in order to make yourself look good (not working btw) Are you so afraid if you say something bad about your other GOP Primary competition everyone will mean tweet you in their defense? This is a new level of desperate

That’s rich, Eric. Every move you make is for political theater, for power, and to raise fear. You are despicable and deserve every call out you are getting.

Wow, Eric. Things must be worse with your “also ran” campaign than we suspected. But no worries. I bet if you look really hard, you can find some school kids to sue.

And on and on…

From Claire:

Claire McCaskill @clairecmc
I’m confused, you lost soul. Is the Missouri Supreme Court lying? I’m just quoting their public statement. I never sold my soul to get re-elected. Someone has convinced you to abandon what you believe it. It’s just sad.

Missouri Supreme Court

A news release, today, from the Missouri Supreme Court:

Supreme Court of Missouri renounces use of photograph for political purposes

17 June 2022

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Late last evening, the Supreme Court of Missouri learned of a campaign mailer using a photograph of Attorney General Eric Schmitt and three of the Court’s judges. The mailer is for Schmitt’s candidacy for the United States Senate.

The photograph was taken by a member of the attorney general’s staff during a public event to which the judges were invited during the state’s bicentennial celebration last August. The judges attended the event in their official capacities to mark a moment of the branches of state government working together. Neither the Court nor its judges had any knowledge that the photograph would be distributed or used in a political context. Furthermore, none of the judges did – or ever would – consent to their names, titles or likenesses being used in any political context. Missouri citizens should know that no Supreme Court judge ever would or could endorse a political candidate and this photograph should not be taken as such an endorsement despite the implication created by the mailer.

Because they were selected pursuant to the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan, Supreme Court judges are prohibited by article V, section 25(f) of the Missouri Constitution from engaging in any political activity.

The judges are disappointed that this photograph was used, without their knowledge or consent, for such a blatant political purpose. They are reporting the incident as required by their judicial code of conduct and legal ethics.

Meanwhile, the Court has asked the attorney general’s office to delete this photograph and any others like it from the office’s public or social media accounts to help prevent any further inappropriate use of such images.

###

The ethics problem:

The return address on the mail piece:

The disclaimer:

The irony of the Missouri Supreme Court getting burned by a dark money PAC supporting Missouri’s Attorney General is just so….

Now, the question is how did Americans for Prosperty Action get that photo? Was it a RSMo § 610 request or did someone give it to them directly?

Heh.

Dumbass.

Josh Hawley (r) [2016 file photo].

This afternoon:

Josh Hawley @HawleyMO
The Democrats’ radical pro-abortion bill would disenfranchise every voter in Missouri, overturn our state laws – and give the power to DC Democrats
2:30 PM · May 11, 2022

Every?

As usual, there is much hilarity in the responses:

So all women in your state are pro life 100%? I find that very hard to believe.

So do they.

Senator Hawley abortion care is part of women’s health care so if you oppose abortion access than you are for restricting women’s health care which would relegate women to second class citizens.

You would know something about “disenfranchise (ing) voters”, huh?! But in this case, Repubs are attempting to ignore the will of 70% of the population. A true representative of the people (district &/or state) would LISTEN to the people they represent & vote accordingly.

Reality is it allows women simply to maintain the rights our grandma’s had.

Our daughters/grands will die when go to hospital unexpectedly, require abortion type procedure to save their life but it’s unavailable due to politics. 1000’s of women will die.

Yes, the point of rights is that they can’t be taken away by a majority that wants to hurt some people.

How do you claim to be a “Constitutional lawyer” without knowing any of the basics?

#ResignHawley

And if they can’t be taken away by a majority, they certainly shouldn’t be taken away by a small but vocal minority.

Maybe your laws should stay the fuck out of women’s bodies?

Hawley and his DC GOP colleagues are putting lives of pregnant people in jeopardy b/c they think it will keep them in power. If you continue to elect them you are taking away the right of your sister, spouse, daughter, nieces, neighbors to access healthcare.

Hard to believe Hawley is an Ivy league graduate. Does he not take polls of voters? I live in MO and am pro-choice.

Keep abortion legal, Hawley.

How Josh.
Don’t just say something.
Show Me

As I recall, every voter in Missouri was disenfranchised when the state legislature struck down TWO Constitutional amendments voted by the PEOPLE of Missouri to draw legitimate voting districts and keeping dark money out of politics

How would you know what Missouri voters want? Book tours, promoting candidates in other states, going to conferences in other states and going on media shows to express your disapproval of anything that Democrats suggest. Josh Hawley, Senator from anywhere but Missouri!

The bill is neither “radical” or “pro-abortion”, but it will sustain the freedoms women have known since 1973.

“Radical pro-abortion bill” in Hawley speak being “a bill that would allow women to make their own healthcare decisions without busybody, white and overwhelmingly male Republicans having a say”

STOP. I am a Missourian and you dont even come close to speaking for me.

No it will give women the power to make their own choices

This makes no sense

“Dear America, Sorry about Josh Hawley, Sincerely, Missouri”

You don’t even live in Missouri, Josh.

No it gives women the power over their own bodies. No uterus, no opinion!

How does having rights disenfranchise me? I’ll need you to explain it.

You don’t live in Missouri.

Do you live in Missouri?

How would it disenfranchise every MO voter? I’m pretty sure the whole state doesn’t vote the same way you do.

Says the man whose residence is in Virginia.

I am one of your constituents and I vehemently disagree with you. It’s a woman’s right to choose, not yours.

What exactly do you get paid to do?

Virginian says what?

You don’t even live in MO. What do you care?

Maybe you should try living here and then you can talk about us like you know anything

How does it disenfranchise anyone? And how would it overturn your state laws? As of now, abortion is still legal. And you are still a traitor.

Missouri women may want a word with you
