35. Witness 1 testified that Greitens then said, “You’re not going to mention my name. Don’t even mention my name to anybody at all, because if you do, I’m going to take these pictures, and I’m going to put them everywhere I can. They are going to be everywhere, and then everyone will know what a little whore you are.”39

[….]the Missouri Ethics Commission fined Governor Eric Greitens (r) and his campaign $1,000.00 for a campaign reporting violation. According to the Missouri Ethics Commission at some point [pdf] in early 2015 the Greitens campaign received a donor list which it did not initially report and which was used by someone in the campaign to contact potential donors.[….]

From Eric Greitens (r):

Eric Greitens
[….]
Two months ago, a prosecutor brought a case against me.
She claimed she had evidence of a crime—but she’s produced none.
She said her investigator would find the truth. Instead, her investigator lied under oath and created false evidence.
She is wasting thousands and thousands of taxpayer dollars to do all of this.
Her original case is falling apart—so today, she’s brought a new one. By now, everyone knows what this is: this prosecutor will use any charge she can to smear me.
Thank goodness for the Constitution and our court system. In the United States of America, you’re innocent until proven guilty. In the United States of America, you get your day in court.
And when I have my day in court, I will clear my name. People will know the truth.
The latest charge is about my work at the Mission Continues. When I came home from Iraq after service as a Navy SEAL, I started the Mission Continues to help veterans. In the seven years I ran that organization, we helped thousands of veterans, won national awards for excellence, and became one of the finest veteran’s charities in the country.
Those were some of the best years of my life, and I am grateful every day for the chance to help the men and women I served with. I stand by that work.
I will have my day in court. I will clear my name. This prosecutor can come after me with everything she’s got, but as all faithful people know: in time comes the truth. And the time for truth is coming.

Keep talking.

Jefferson City. We’d heard the rumors over a day ago. Then we saw this:

3:48 PM – 19 Apr 2018

Senator Jamilah Nasheed (D) sent a letter to the Director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety yesterday asking for increased security at the capitol complex. There’s this paragraph in the letter:

“…There are additional unconfirmed rumors circulating the Capitol involving an incident at the Greitens’ Innsbrook home involving troubling behavior, the presence of firearms and a member of the Governor’s cabinet. While these reports are unconfirmed…”

It’s long past time to clean up this mess. The Missouri House of Representatives has the authority and the obligation to do so.

The republican leadership in the Missouri General Assembly is calling for Eric Greitens (r) to resign.

Eric Greitens (r) [2016 file photo].

This evening, from Eric Greitens (r), via Twitter:

Eric Greitens @EricGreitens
I will not be resigning the Governor’s office. In three weeks, this matter will go to a court of law—where it belongs and where the facts will prove my innocence. Until then, I will do what the people of Missouri sent me here to do: to serve them and work hard on their behalf.
7:35 PM – 17 Apr 2018

Some of the responses:

Resign. Missourians deserve better than a manipulative, sexually abusive man in the Governor’s Mansion.

Wait. All of your crimes go to trial in three weeks? The sexual assault stuff and the charity stuff? It’s hard to keep up so please forgive me for not knowing which alleged crimes we’re talking about here, Governor.

Well, this is one Republican who worked to get you elected, and I now believe very strongly you need to resign for the good of this state. I made a mistake. It is now time to do what is right. Please step aside. I pray for God to forgive you.

I didn’t vote for you, and I think you should leave. #ResignNow

Then let the impeachment proceedings begin.

Please. Resign.

If you had any concern for the people of Missouri then you would resign.

No do the right thing and resign.

Look at what constituents are saying ! Grovel out !

If only you realized that impeachment does not require a conviction in a court of law. You are an embarrassment to our state and if you had a shred of integrity you would resign.

You don’t need to resign, the General Assembly is going to fire you.

you are a pathetic fool. No shame. Seek mental health counseling.

You’re only serving your ego and the dark money that got you elected.

RESIGN

Resign. Or be impeached. Take your pick, Eric. #TimesUp

I can’t believe I voted for you. You’re putting yourself before missourians you about to have another case against you a very strong case. Let the impeachment process begin.

@MOHouseGOP: impeach him now. Save Missouri from further embarrassment.

You need to resign. Your arrogance and toxic, sick macho act are the last things we need in government. God willing, your political career has been raptured.

This will be your legacy, governor.

Ok, Blagojevich.

You’re going to jail

I voted for you. I’m sorry I did. You do NOT have a mandate to lead. Step aside so #Misssouri can get to work.

Impeachment works wonders.

By all means, don’t. It will be so much more satisfying to watch you lose every shred of dignity on the way out.

Cool. They’ll just forcibly remove you then.

I can’t believe this guy is clinging to power.

Nobody Believes You Eric.

Get over it Greitens, we don’t trust you, a liar, no character! We do not want a person like you running the state of Missouri. It’s called consequences for your behavior

Step down Dude. It’s over.

You’re not serving the people of Missouri very well under these circumstances.

The consensus begs to differ.

I think you are being pretty foolish. You need to step down.

Walk out or booted out, the end result will be that you’ll be out. It’s coming.

You sir are a complete moron and you will be removed by impeachment. Good day!

Why? To spread those good family values you preached on the campaign trail?? Resigning would be the last bit of pride you have left. Disgraceful.

Resign dude, it’s over

On behalf of Sen. McCaskill thank you for the smooth road to a Dem Majority.

Let the impeachment begin.

Yeah, good luck with that. People really hate you.

the facts are, that you are not fit to serve in office.
Do the right thing and resign.

Know when to call it quits, Governor. For reference, that was three weeks ago.

You don’t work on my behalf. Go away.

Now what?

Whereupon Missouri government and politics Twitter blew up.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) [2017 file photo].

A press release from Senator Claire McCaskill’s (D) U.S. Senate campaign:

April 17, 2018 Press Releases
McCaskill for Missouri Statement on Hawley Press Conference Regarding Statute of Limitations for Greitens’ Use of The Mission Continues Donor List

MISSOURI — McCaskill for Missouri Communications Director Meira Bernstein released the following statement on Attorney General Josh Hawley’s press conference today, during which he claimed that the statute of limitations is approaching on Governor Greitens’ use of The Mission Continues donor list:

“We’re glad that Hawley has come out of hiding to acknowledge the existing evidence of criminal behavior of the Governor. However, the sad truth is that this shows gross incompetence on the part of the Attorney General. The evidence in this case has been publicly available since October 2016 — what excuse could Josh Hawley possibly have for failing to pursue an investigation and allowing this evidence to languish for over a year? The only reason the statute of limitations is now a problem in this case is because Hawley was trying to protect his friend and large donor for as long as possible.”

Background:

October 10, 2016: Press reports that Greitens used a donor list from his charity, The Mission Continues, to solicit donations for his campaign.

April 28, 2017: Greitens is fined by the Missouri Ethics Commission and admits wrongdoing for his use of the charity donor list.

February 27, 2018: Press reports that St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner may be looking into the Governor’s use of the charity donor list.

March 1, 2018: Press reports confirm that St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner is looking into the Governor’s use of the charity donor list.

March 1, 2018: Hawley announces he is investigating Greitens’ use of the charity donor list after press reports confirm the prosecuting attorney’s investigation, despite declining to investigate for nearly a year.

Eric Greitens (r) [2016 file photo].

Just go away.

Look, you can afford to walk away. One of those billionaires you know could be good for any right wingnut welfare you’d get for being on the letterhead and not showing up at your office at a cleverly named D.C. beltway propaganda concern.

Instead, be with your family. Tinker in your garden. Work out (it’ll make you feel better). Write a book about your experience. It’ll sell. Your base will plunk down good cash for something like that. Make motivational speeches. There’ll be a market for your individual, though not quite uncommon, perspective. Even if you end up serving time.

What you shouldn’t do is feel entitled to remain as Governor of Missouri. We read the report [pdf]. Oh yes, it’s credible. Five Republicans and two Democrats on the Missouri House Special Investigative Committee on Oversight heard the testimony, reviewed the documents and evidence, wrote the report, and signed it.

We read the report. No person should treat another that way. Ever.

Just go away. But, you won’t, will you? Because you’re that much of an arrogant narcissist. Which is what got you into this trouble in the first place.

As an obvious understatement we would call that a disqualifying character flaw.

You probably still believe that you’ll be president. The sad thing for everyone else is that you’re probably right. The bar is so low these days.
