The Governor’s Ham Breakfast at the Missouri State Fair took place this morning in Sedalia. This annual event is usually a “must attend” function for Missouri legislators, statewide office holders, and members of Congress. Usually.

There are always displays of yard signs and a gauntlet of t-shirt bedecked volunteers passing out campaign stickers at the entrance to the morning’s festivities.

It’s an opportunity for us to replenish our “b roll” of file photos of Missouri politicians with newer images. The problem is that the members of the General Assembly come by so thick and fast we can’t keep up. But we do get a few photos.

In west central Missouri, one person’s story.

I just received word from a friend that their elderly parent fell and broke a leg. This injury will require surgery and a hospital stay. Their local small town hospital has no available beds. Due to COVID-19 cases. This in a county with a very low vaccination rate and active anti-mask agitators.

Their injured parent was transferred to a suburban hospital. That hospital has no available beds. Their parent is in that hospital’s emergency department until a bed becomes available. The friend described a scene with patients in beds in the hallways.

What does anyone think will happen to a patient in the case of a heart attack, or a stroke, or injuries due to a car accident?

If you’re anti-vaccine and/or anti-mask you own this. It’s your world. And you’re a dumbass sociopath.

If you haven’t already done so, get vaccinated.

Wear a damn mask.

Missouri Revised Statutes:

[§]167.181. Immunization of pupils against certain diseases compulsory — exceptions — records — to be at public expense, when — fluoride treatments administered, when — rulemaking authority, procedure. — 1. The department of health and senior services, after consultation with the department of elementary and secondary education, shall promulgate rules and regulations governing the immunization against poliomyelitis, rubella, rubeola, mumps, tetanus, pertussis, diphtheria, and hepatitis B, to be required of children attending public, private, parochial or parish schools. Such rules and regulations may modify the immunizations that are required of children in this subsection. The immunizations required and the manner and frequency of their administration shall conform to recognized standards of medical practice. The department of health and senior services shall supervise and secure the enforcement of the required immunization program.

  2. It is unlawful for any student to attend school unless he has been immunized as required under the rules and regulations of the department of health and senior services, and can provide satisfactory evidence of such immunization; except that if he produces satisfactory evidence of having begun the process of immunization, he may continue to attend school as long as the immunization process is being accomplished in the prescribed manner. It is unlawful for any parent or guardian to refuse or neglect to have his child immunized as required by this section, unless the child is properly exempted.

Destination Marketing Organization Grant Program

Through this program, $15 million in CARES Act funding will be designated for destination marketing organizations (DMOs), entities that promote Missouri as a great place to visit. The funds will be administered by the Missouri Division of Tourism and will grant eligible DMOs funding for recovery efforts such as payroll relief, reimbursement for necessary safety equipment, and the initiation of marketing campaigns with messaging focused on safe travel. Eligible DMOs must have participated in the Division’s Cooperative Marketing Program in FY19, FY20, or both.

“This program is part of a focused effort to support Missouri’s tourism industry. When the COVID-19 health emergency hit Missouri, the tourism and hospitality industry nearly shut down completely,” Missouri Department of Economic Development Director Rob Dixon said. “This funding will help our tourism industry make our state’s many attractions and activities safer and reinforce messaging to encourage visitors to come to Missouri and safely enjoy all there is to see and do here.”

Tonight, from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS):

Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services posted a local alert for Johnson County and 2 other counties.

JOHNSON, LAFAYETTE & SALINE COUNTIES: COVID-19 cases in Johnson (299), Lafayette (256) and Saline (165) have increased in the past 14 days.

Hospitals in the region are seeing resource strain from dramatically increased numbers of COVID-19 patients and hospitalizations. As a result, several hospitals in the region are at or near capacity. Continued disease spread into Northwest Missouri is expected.

The Delta variant, which spreads more easily and poses higher risk of hospitalization than prior variants, is believed to be contributing to the increase. Vaccination continues to be our best tool to move past this pandemic.

Vaccination rates:
– Johnson County: 23.4%
– Lafayette County: 34.5%
– Saline County: 35.8%
Experts say at least 70% – 80% of people need immunity to minimize spread within a community.

Those who choose not to get vaccinated should continue these important public health steps:

Time for a new rule, all eligible people that chose not to get vaccinated don’t qualify for priority medical care. People who drink don’t qualify for transplants so I believe that the standard has already been set.

The vet. If they have a fever they stamp their foot twice.

What I don’t get is they say they don’t trust the government but they also don’t trust the vaccine because it doesn’t have FDA approval. Do they know what FDA stands for?

They’re immune to logic.

To the ERs where they cry and clog up the system. Then the MIs, CVAs, GSW have to compete for care and a bed. Not fair! No Vax? Back of the line. No Vax? You pay the costs of care. No Vax? No bars, restaurants, movies, concerts.

Well, when they get sick with Delta, they should just stay home and deal.with it. It’s only the flu, right? They don’t trust doctors and science. Why should they go to people they don’t trust? Let the hospitals be free to treat heart attacks & accident victims.

They sure don’t trust a lot of people: doctors, scientists, the government, etc…

They trust Facebook more than doctors.

While also talking about how they hate the media and Big Tech. Oh, and that to stop communism, the government should take over traditional media and social media companies. It is almost like they don’t know what they are talking about or something.

Just like the rest of the R’s, they make the mess, expect someone else to clean it up, then complain because the D’s didn’t do it to their satisfaction. [….]

To work. To school. On airplanes. On buses. They spread their sickness across the community and country cause they drank a little sea moss with molasses and ginger. They are fine. [….]

RN here. They call our office begging for advice & asking for all the crazy shit they’ve heard about. When we tell them that’s not an option/no cure they’re stunned. Advice: stay home and go to the hospital only when you’re sick enough to need admission. That & good luck

They also likely get treatments that are still under emergency authorization for that Covid. So that excuse for not getting vaccinated goes out the window.

They beg for monoclonal antibodies which are only authorized under an emergency use authorization because they don’t like the vaccine because it’s authorized under an emergency use authorization.

Spoiler alert: the Emergency Room. I see them. Often. My favorite is when they still don’t believe you after you diagnose them.

They go to the doctor just like everyone else, except currently they filling up the hospitals, you know the ones full of doctors.

So what message is the right one? That you’re admitting that you haven’t learned a god damn thing? That you’re probably making a ton of money the longer that Covid goes?

You’re the human version of a participation trophy.

10,000 Covid deaths in Missouri and you recently bragged about providing extra ambulances to transport Covid patients to neighboring hospitals. This sends the message that Missourians getting sick and/or dying is preferred over wearing a piece of cloth on your face.

Gladly will wear a mask to help others… You know sacrifice for others is something your demographic is supposed to understand

Nope! People who live in communities, participate in communities and shop in communities need to wear mask regardless of vaccination. The vaccinated are protected enough to keep them out of the hospital but they are as contagious as the unvaccinated. Hence the spread AGAIN!!!!

I hate masks but I put one on every time I go indoors in a public space. If the CDC is “strongly recommending” it there might be a reason to be concerned. This should not be a political sticking point. Mask mandates in schools make sense. The schools will be isolating in weeks.

Why? Virologists have shown that breakthrough infections and transmission can very much happen among the vaccinated. So, why wouldn’t we want a mandate so that there is just that much more preventative action?

Now, how could we go about granting the vaccinated freer access w/o requiring a mask? Hmmmm… Something passport, I swear. What was it?

Why? If Missourians ONLY get a vaccine because they think it means they will never have to wear a mask again, then you have failed in your messaging regarding the benefits of the vaccine. Obviously the current measures are failing us and something else is needed. Masks work.

Not if it saves lives by stopping the spread of a potentially deadly virus. Wearing a mask says, “I live in a civil society and care about my actions and how they effect others”.

Yes, but we live in Missouri.

Don’t you realize that the vaccinated people are wearing masks to protect those that are too Young or too dumb to get vaccinated? Do you honestly think we want to wear masks? For Pete’s sake we’re just trying to save peoples lives.

Many of us who are vaccinated continue wearing our masks, Governor. Now Delta is spreading and everyone, vaccinated or not, is again at risk for transmission. Universal masking helps stop the spread. I trust my kid’s infectious disease doc about this more than you.

Why the stubbornness? The FACT that vaccinated people can both contract AND spread Covid is the reason vaccinated folks should also wear masks until you can get the vaccine in enough arms to reach hers immunity. It’s not that difficult to understand – quit being obtuse

I’m fully vaccinated and wear a mask for a two main reasons -1) my young children can’t be vaccinated at the moment 2) since I can still catch Covid, my mask adds more protection for those who aren’t vaccinated, either by choice or because they’re too young

You right. Missouri as a whole doesn’t seem to acknowledge science.

YOU are sending the wrong message to Missourians

Problem is, there is no way to tell who is vaccinated without requiring proof of vaccination. And the same people who refuse to wear masks are the same people (for the most part) that refuse to get vaccinated. So we’re all screwed.

This absolutely ridiculous….mask mandates should be for everyone due to the fact of the high number of unvaccinated people. This is reckless. Have you no moral compass. What is wrong with you.

It’s to save children’s lives #ParsonIsAnIdiot

So what you’re saying is the state motto, Salus populi suprema lex esto, is a lie and the welfare of the people is not the supreme law. YOU are delivering the WRONG message, Gov. Negligent Homicide. Hope you are sued into oblivion for each and every death, and all damages.
