Des Moines, Iowa, Pete Buttigieg, president, town hall

“…I have never been more convinced than I am now that our country is running out of time, but that it’s not too late. That is what this campaign I about. And we’re going to have to act fast in order to make sure that the future is better than the past…”

Pete Buttigieg (D) – Des Moines, Iowa – October 12, 2019.

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) continued his presidential campaign in Iowa with an outdoor town hall on the grounds of Roosevelt High School in Des Moines last night. The open event, with temperatures dropping into the low forties toward the end, had an audience of several hundred. Pete Buttigieg’s campaign forwarded an estimated attendance of 700. In addition to the seasonally cold temperature there was a steady wind throughout the event.

Pete Buttigieg’s opening remarks:

https://showmeprogress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/petebuttigiegdesmoinesiowa101219.mp3

…The core falsehood of the phrase ‘make America great again’ is that there is no such thing as ‘again’ in the real world. It falls to us to make sure that the future is better than the past. And I’m asking you to join me making sure [cheers][applasue]…

…I know what happens when decisions are made without caring about us in the middle of the country. And it’s the story of not just my community, but of my life. People in my life have been saved by Obamacare, people in my life have been lost to the opioid crisis. I’m standing in front of you as somebody who’s life was changed by the orders of an American president that sent me overseas to a war zone. And somebody who’s marriage exists by the grace of a single vote on the United State Supreme Court…

…what kind of president is America going to need after the Trump presidency comes to an end? Remember, one way or another, or the other, the Trump presidency is going to come to an end. [cheers] It’s an encouraging thought. [laughter] It’s early, but I’m asking you to stop and really think what it’s gonna be like. That first day, when dawn comes to a country after Donald Trump ha been president. Sure, it’s a relief to think about the fact that this particular kind of chaos and corruption will come to an end. But then what? Our country will be even more torn apart by politics than we are right now…

…We’re going to need a president to pick up the pieces, to turn the page, and to lead America into a future where we deal with these big challenges in front of us and are unified. We’re gonna be so exhausted from fighting and yet, we can’t give up. And we also can’t turn on each other. Think about what that will require of the American president…

…I’m asking you to spread something that I know went out of style a little bit in American politics, and it’s hope. ‘Cause running for office is an act of hope. Organizing for somebody running for office is an act of hope. Voting is an act of hope…

This evening, from the slightly less stupid son:

Donald Trump Jr. @DonaldJTrumpJr
Why is @KamalaHarris the only person that laughs at her jokes… always way to long and way too hard? The most disingenuous person in politics… after Hillary.

Today:

Hartzler Statement on Syria Developments
October 11, 2019 Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C — Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) issued the following statement regarding Turkey’s invasion into northern Syria earlier this week:

“I am deeply concerned by the reports coming out of Syria in the aftermath of Turkey’s invasion earlier this week. The Kurds, including the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Free Syrian Army, are fiercely loyal allies who have stood by the United States since the First Gulf War. They have been fundamental in rooting out terrorists who seek to harm the United States and our allies. Nothing shows that more clearly than their valiant efforts to root out ISIS.

“We should not be complicit in the slaughter of our Kurdish allies by Turkey or any other actor trying to increase its influence in the region. I call on the White House to modify its strategy in Syria so that bad state actors, including Russia, Iran, and non-state actors like Hezbollah or a resurgent ISIS, are not permitted to get and maintain a foothold in the region. Allowing them to do so would erase every gain we have made and would gravely jeopardize our security interests in the region.

“I hope the White House further pursues a military strategy that ensures religious minorities in Syria, including Christians, are able to freely practice their religion and be protected from extremists who would do them harm.
“I will continue to work with my colleagues to explore ways to protect the Kurds who have been working alongside us in the region and to hold Turkey accountable for their assault on our allies.

Really? What did you expect?

Today:

Exclusive: Turkey Attacks US Special Forces in Syria, Apparently by Mistake

A contingent of U.S. Special Forces was caught up in Turkish shelling against U.S.-backed Kurdish positions in northern Syria, days after President Donald Trump told his Turkish counterpart he would withdraw U.S. troops from certain positions in the area. A senior Pentagon official said shelling by the Turkish forces was so heavy that the U.S. personnel considered firing back in self-defense…

An open public townhall would have been epic. But, that’s never going to happen.

Last night:

Some of the responses:

Ivanka only empowers her pockets. Remember she exploited women and kids in her sweat shops.

And where is the mystery funding? Never mind, we get that #GenocideBarbie needed some meaningless limelight.

So while you were in KC did you setup a Townhall for this week?

We all know the answer to that. No. Never. Not a chance in hell.

Giuliani Associates Subpoenaed in House Impeachment Inquiry
Subpoenas Demand Documents Being Withheld by Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman
Washington, October 10, 2019

Washington, D.C. (Oct. 10, 2019)—Today, Rep. Adam B. Schiff, the Chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Eliot L. Engel, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, sent a letter conveying subpoenas to two business associates of Rudy Giuliani, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, for key documents by October 16, 2019 that they have refused to produce as part of the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.

“Your clients are private citizens who are not employees of the Executive Branch. They may not evade requests from Congress for documents and information necessary to conduct our inquiry. They are required by law to comply with the enclosed subpoenas. They are not exempted from this requirement merely because they happen to work with Mr. Giuliani, and they may not defy congressional subpoenas merely because President Trump has chosen the path of denial, defiance, and obstruction,” the Chairmen wrote.

The Committees are investigating the extent to which President Trump jeopardized national security by pressing Ukraine to interfere with our 2020 election and by withholding a White House meeting with the President of Ukraine and military assistance provided by Congress to help Ukraine counter Russian aggression, as well as any efforts to cover up these matters.

“In addition to providing the subpoenaed documents, the Committees also expect your clients to appear to testify about these matters at a later date,” the Chairmen wrote.

Parnas and Fruman are “clients of Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani” who reportedly were “assisting Giuliani’s push to get Ukrainian officials to investigate former vice president Joe Biden and his son, as well as Giuliani’s claim that Democrats conspired with Ukrainians in the 2016 campaign.”

Throughout this period, Parnas and Fruman also reportedly “touted connections to Giuliani and Trump.” For example, they “boasted that they had worked with Mr. Giuliani to force the recall this spring of the American ambassador to Ukraine, Marie L. Yovanovitch.”

They reportedly “told people that Trump would replace the U.S. ambassador there months before she was actually recalled to Washington.” When Mr. Giuliani was asked about whether he was involved with this effort to recall the Ambassador to Ukraine, he responded, “I did play a role in that.”

In addition, press reports indicate that Parnas and Fruman were involved with efforts to press Ukrainian officials to change the management structure at a Ukrainian state-owned energy company, Naftogaz, to benefit individuals involved with Giuliani’s push to get Ukrainian officials to interfere in the 2020 election.

The proposal to install new board members at Naftogaz reportedly was championed by “two Soviet-born Florida real estate entrepreneurs, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, and an oil magnate from Boca Raton, Florida, named Harry Sargeant III.”

Refusal to Cooperate with Impeachment Inquiry

On September 30, 2019, the Committees sent letters to Parnas and Fruman requesting that they produce documents relating to the Committees’ inquiry by October 7, 2019, and appear for depositions on October 10, 2019, for Parnas and October 11, 2019, for Fruman.

On October 3, 2019, counsel for Parnas and Fruman sent a letter requesting additional time to respond and confirming that “Messrs. Parnas and Fruman assisted Mr. Giuliani in connection with his representation of President Trump.”

On October 8, 2019, counsel for Parnas and Fruman sent a second letter stating that they would not appear for the depositions.

On October 9, 2019, counsel for Parnas and Fruman sent an email informing Committee counsel that they “agree with and adopt the position of the White House Counsel” and attached a copy of a letter that the White House Counsel sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Committees stating that President Trump will not cooperate with the impeachment inquiry.

Judy Baker (D) [2017 file photo].

Judy Baker (D) announced today that she’s running for the 19th Senate District seat currently held by Caleb Rowden (r):

Good Afternoon! I have some big news! After much consideration and reaching out to friends, voters, and leaders in my community, I have decided to run for our State Senate seat here in mid-Missouri.

Our community needs representation that reflects its values. Our politicians in Jefferson City, MO keep voting against us. Sometimes they flat out try to overturn the will of people who have voted on ballot initiatives or sometimes they just go too far and pass an abortion ban that has no exceptions for rape and incest. Sometimes, they ignore sensible firearm legislation that would save lives. They don’t value local control and they aren’t interested in the stewardship of our planet. And then there’s the matter of kicking kids off Healthcare coverage!

I am going to stand up. I hope you will stand with me!

Excellent.

It’s in the Constitution somewhere.

Representative Vicky Hartzler (r) [2016 file photo].

This morning:

Rep. Vicky Hartzler @RepHartzler
House Democrats never believe in due process when it comes to @realDonaldTrump. They are abusing the House Committee powers in a witch hunt to overturn the 2016 results and undue the will of the American people.

I support the @WhiteHouse letter to Speaker Pelosi:
[….]
11:26 AM · Oct 9, 2019

Comic sans?

There was much hilarity in the response:

Did you forget about 2018? Or does that election not count?

So, you think the president is above the law?

Of course you do. You guys have amazing mental gymnastics when it comes to justifying what trump does but are amazingly rigid to often made up rules for democrats.

You misspelled electoral college.

I think you mean “undo” rather than “undue” — “undue” would be the type of influence and power that the president attempted to wield to induce Ukraine to spy on @JoeBiden

Heh.

You do realize we’re on the verge of losing the cold war, right Vicky? This isn’t about process, this is about country.

Didn’t the Cold War end in 1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved? What am I missing?

Does this help?:

“Россия” (Russia) – a variant of the Russian presidential flag.

I mean, considering that you support dead Kurds and caged kids, I can’t imagine that this comes as a big surprise to anyone.

I don’t know why I’m commenting since you ignore us all anyway. This is not to overturn results of a prior election. This is to prevent Trump from further damaging our country. (And FWIW, the will of the majority of the American people in 2016 was not to elect Trump).

Well, yes:

OFFICIAL 2016 PRESIDENTIAL GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS [pdf] [Federal Election Commission]
General Election Date: 11/08/2016
[Hillary] Clinton 65,853,516 48.18%
[Donald] Trump 62,984,825 46.09%

House Democrats believe in the rule of law. Unlike the Republican party that has thrown the Constitution out of the window. Our country is in trouble and all you can do is look the other way while it’s looted and burned to the ground. This is insanity!

Clinton underwent an impeachment inquiry for lying about a blow job. This Orange Fool said on television, multiple times, that he’d like foreign governments to investigate political rivals. So much for checks and balances. So much for democracy. Why do you hate democracy Vicky?

You are a literal fascist.

You do know the “will of the people” voted for Hillary, right? Did your male handlers not teach you how to use that googly internety searchy thingy?

you are an embarrassment and should resign.

Then you have sold out too. The letter is entirely legally unfounded. Shame on you for putting your name on such nonsense

You support the traitor in the White House, yeah, no big surprise. You support him robbing the taxpayers blind, his racism, his corruption, asking a foreign government for election assistance, ignoring check and balances & rule of law.

You support him slaughtering the Kurds too?

RepHartzler please stop the bs !
Care about the constitution and the country instead of your party line!

Like you abuse farm subsidies?
