“Always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” – Elie Wiesel

Yesterday afternoon on Facebook, from Representative Emanuel Cleaver II (D):

Emanuel Cleaver II
After reading President Trump’s remarkably racist tweets about four of my colleagues, my most agonizing pain results from the seamy silence and notorious neutrality of those whom I believe to be principled people. When the President of the United States says something so racially vulgar, carte blanche, and then doubles down on such rhetoric, then great and widespread is their sin. Although I have a public and political record of not calling individuals racist, even when they are, right now I am being tested like never before.

Some of the responses:

Congressman, respectfully, it’s time. He needs to be called exactly what he is… Liar, racist, etc.

This is one of those times history is going to remember.

After the Holocaust, it was “Never Again…” except “Never Again” is right now and we can NOT let racism and hatred win. We can not let a man like this, and his followers, destroy the fabric of this country.

Emanuel Cleaver II, the majority of us need you to start calling it like it is, here. Your voice is louder since it’s ours collectively. Trump has crossed line after line. ENOUGH! Call him out!

Always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. – Elie Wiesel

Perhaps you are being “tested,” but not to remain silent, but to remain vigilant to the cause of justice. Perhaps you are to “test” the “seamy silence” that called your name so loudly. Perhaps it is your voice, Mr. Cleaver in a coalition with others needed to “test” Trump!

Please speak out. Our country needs to hear the voice of reason.

The silence is deafening. Thank you for speaking up. I’m so disappointed in those who say nothing!

Please go ahead and say it.

Scream it from the roof tops. It is the truth.

Could not agree more. How I’m the name of decency can they remain silent?

Dr King said, “Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our souls when we look the other way.” The racist-in-chief needs to be chastised loudly and long for the hateful rhetoric he spews which gives courage to the very worst in our society.

The “Silent Majority” of Americans which believes that diversity is what makes our country strong need to be shouting it from the rooftops! Please, be my voice in Washington, Rev. Cleaver!!

time to say it. way past time.

I’m so sorry. I’ll say it for you. They’re racists.

Congressman Cleaver, it is the Declaration of Independence which places the urgency in your soul. Whomsoever wantonly attacks the equality of citizens does not respect the ideal of our United States. We beseech you to not let the gravity of this attack go unanswered.

If this is not a sterile form of lynching then I don’t know what is.
I urge you to take a page out of the playbook of our beloved friends Daniel and Plillip Berrigan and made your voice indelibly heard.
We elected you to speak for us.
Feel our prayers and support as you go forth.

I can carry that load for you brother. Donald J Trump is a racist.

Meta.

As part of an Iowa road trip covering the 2020 Presidential Campaign and Democratic Party candidates I sent an RSVP to a press notice about an appearance by Senator Cory Booker (D) in Ankeny, Iowa scheduled early (relatively, as campaign events go) this morning. Covering the event was going to be easy – for me it was on the way back to Missouri from the previous day’s event at the exact driving time I would have been there anyway.

On first notice from the campaign the format of the event wasn’t clear to me. By the time of the event I realized I would be covering a live taping of the first of a series of structured presidential candidate interviews (with submitted audience questions) leading up to the 2020 Iowa Caucuses.

Since this was a live taping of television public affairs program the press ground rules for covering it were specific and strict. Media/press were issued credentials, we were stationed in a media room with a live feed (audio and visual), we could not live stream (this program will be broadcast on Iowa Public Television later this week), and we would be escorted and accompanied individually into the venue for still photography for brief periods during the event – this so as we would not inadvertently interfere with camera lines and audio. Oh, and no tripods.

About fifteen minutes before the start of the event a representative of Iowa Public Television asked me if I would act as the pool still photographer. This changed the dynamics of my coverage. On one hand, as a photographer I get more access (accompanied) time in the venue, but it’s also now more important and necessary that I am successful at getting usable images because they are going to be shared with everybody. I would not be able to monitor my audio recording of the event, nor would I be able to pay undivided attention to portions of the hour long taping a I prepared and sent my pool still images.

This afternoon ten of the Democratic Party candidates for President spoke in turn to a crowd of over 1100 individuals gathered at the NewBo City Market (a town square/small business development project) in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Two additional candidates were also scheduled to speak but were not able to appear due to other circumstances (a delayed flight for one, a power outage in his city for another). The event was sponsored by Progress, Iowa.

The venue opened at noon, with the candidate speeches starting at 1:30 p.m. The sky was partly cloudy, with the temperature in the mid 90s. Spots in the shade were at a premium. There were periodic announcements over the sound system reminding everyone to hydrate.

In the period before the speeches candidate’s campaigns and various interest groups had information tents/tables around the venue. The vendors inside the NewBo City Market had a variety of food and drink available for purchase.

Inside the Newbo City Market.

Each of the candidates was introduced before their scheduled speaking time slot and was allocated around ten minutes for their remarks. The event did not run over time.

Former Congressman John Delaney (D).

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D).

At the press gaggle inside the market, immediately after speaking:

Marianne Williamson (D).

Congressman Tim Ryan (D).

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D).

Congressman Seth Moulton (D).

Former HUD Secretary Julián Castro (D).

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D).

Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D).

The candidate speeches (more on that later) highlighted each candidate’s messages and experience, and also reinforced the reality that they all agree on issues much more than they disagree. And, of course, they all agree, Donald Trump must not be reelected in 2020.

Americans do not support Trump’s ICE raids
By Marshall Fitz, opinion contributor — 07/13/19 10:00 AM EDT

…Beginning Sunday morning, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), by order of President Trump, will begin a series of cruel, unnecessary raids aimed at rounding up, detaining and deporting thousands of people. Many of those immigrants detained will have had the removal orders against them filed in absentia — meaning they will have never been informed of the orders’ existence.

Among those specifically targeted will be families who had enrolled in the now-terminated Family Case Management Program — an effective, cost-efficient program that saw almost 100 percent compliance rates with immigration hearings and check-ins. Also targeted will be young immigrants who had previously been protected from deportation as unaccompanied minors, but who aged out of such protections when they turned 18.

By devoting resources to inflicting fear and hardship on immigrant communities at a time when children are being denied soap, toothpaste, blankets and other necessities in dangerously overcrowded Border Patrol facilities on the southern border, the administration is making the inhumanity of its policies plain for all to see…

Last night over 500 individuals showed up at Washington Square Park in Kansas City, Missouri for a rally on immigration which was organized as one of the Lights for Liberty demonstrations which were held across the country “to stand in solidarity with immigrant communities across the country and protest human detention camps”. The event, starting at 7:00 p.m., included information tables, postcards to Congress stations, speakers, and a vigil.

“…You think they’re doing this to delay the gathering of signatures? Of course they are…”

Today the Missouri Supreme Court refused to intervene in the Missouri Western District Court of Appeals ruling that the Missouri ACLU’s initiative petition to reverse the anti-abortion HB 126 can move forward in the process.

Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft (r) [2019 file photo].

From the Missouri ACLU:

ACLU Win Affirmed, But Ashcroft Continues to Prevent Vote
July 12, 2019 – 4:00pm

Today, the Missouri Supreme Court let stand the Court of Appeals holding that Secretary of State Ashcroft acted outside his legal authority by rejecting the referendum petition on Missouri’s abortion ban. This recognition that Ashcroft acted illegally should prevent him from ever again abusing his office to derail the people’s right to challenge legislation by referendum.

Unfortunately, Ashcroft is continuing to obstruct the people’s vote by dragging his feet in his quest to deny the people a say on Missouri’s extreme 8-week abortion ban. If he acted promptly, supporters could begin to gather signatures by July 18 at the latest. But Ashcroft seems intent to slow the process so that supporters will not have enough time to collect enough signatures.

“It is no secret that Ashcroft’s agenda is banning abortion in Missouri,” says Anthony Rothert, interim Executive Director at the ACLU of Missouri. “While it is fantastic that the courts have made clear that he acted illegally, he may well succeed in preventing voters from getting their say on this important issue. Ashcroft’s tenure as Missouri’s chief election officer continues to be marked by efforts to prevent Missourians from voting.”

If Ashcroft had not illegally rejected the referendum petition, then he would have had to certify the petition for signature gathering by July 18. He will not meet that deadline, which in turn denies a meaningful opportunity to collect signatures, which must be submitted by August 28.

We reject the idea that Missourians can be denied the right to a referendum because of the unlawful action of an elected official determined to take away constitutional rights. The people kept for themselves the right of referendum to safeguard Missourians from an overzealous, out-of-touch government. No matter how they would vote on the referendum, every Missourian is harmed by Ashcroft’s abuse of this office to serve his radical anti-abortion agenda.

Our fight is not over. We continue to push Ashcroft to his job by certifying ballot language by July 18. Should he fail to do so, we will not let Missourians forget that he has taken the fate of the abortion ban away from the voters of Missouri.

Ironic isn’t it? Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft (r) gets away with doing his job poorly. In Missouri republican circles that’s considered a feature, not a bug.

“…You think they’re doing this to delay the gathering of signatures? Of course they are…”

Jay Ashcroft (r) [2017 file photo].

The Missouri Western District Court of Appeals ruled a few days ago that the Missouri ACLU’s initiative petition to reverse the anti-abortion HB 126 can move forward in the process. Except:

ACLU of Missouri

Let us be very clear. We are NOT cleared to gather signatures yet. Why? Secretary Ashcroft is obstructing the right to referendum.
The court ruled that Secretary Ashcroft acted illegally. He is now purposefully denying the right of the people to have a referendum.
The court is allowing Secretary Ashcroft to restart the clock and delay giving us ballot language until it could be too late to collect signatures.
That’s why we’ve appealed to the Missouri Supreme Court today.

[….]

Know this: If we are blocked from the ballot box because Secretary Ashcroft has run down the clock and given us, the people, no meaningful chance to gather 100,000 signatures by August 28th, we will continue to fight.
The ACLU will do whatever is necessary to make sure abortion remains legal in Missouri. The campaign will work to make sure reproductive rights are preserved across the state in any way it can.

[….]

The fight for reproductive rights does not rely on a single tool. We will see you in the streets, in the legislature, at the ballot box, and in the court room.

[….]
