What’s next for the abortion pill mifepristone?
Updated April 10, 20233:29 PM ET

[….]

…The name-brand drug Mifeprex was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration more than 20 years ago. Since then, it has been used millions of times, and major medical groups say it has a strong safety record. A generic version was approved in 2019.

Now, the drug’s future is in jeopardy. A federal judge in Texas issued a preliminary injunction that undoes the FDA’s approval of mifepristone nationwide beginning this Friday….

[….]

As of Monday, there is no change yet to Americans’ ability to access mifepristone.

But that could change as soon as this Friday, when the preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk is set to take effect.

[….]

Kacsmaryk, a Trump appointee, agreed with their concerns and, in a preliminary ruling on Friday, declared the FDA’s approval to be invalid….

Federal judge in Texas hears case that could force a major abortion pill off market
Updated March 15, 20237:39 PM ET

[….]

A coalition of anti-abortion medical groups and doctors called the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine sued the FDA back in November, saying the abortion pill mifepristone was improperly approved two decades ago as part of a two-drug protocol that’s used to end pregnancies in the first trimester.

Erin Hawley, an attorney representing Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, argued that doctors who are part of this group have been forced to treat patients who have experienced complications, which can include heavy bleeding. In some cases, Hawley said, doctors have been forced to provide a surgical procedure to complete the abortion, despite their deeply held beliefs.

Erin Morrow Hawley Is Leading the Charge to Ban Abortion Medication. She’s Also Josh Hawley’s Wife
Reproductive rights activists are raising scrutiny over attorney Erin Hawley’s role in the suit against the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone. The Texas federal judge overseeing the lawsuit made a past donation to her husband’s campaign.

BY ABIGAIL TRACY
MARCH 23, 2023

As a Texas federal judge deliberates his decision in a high-profile case that could impose a nationwide ban on a leading abortion drug, reproductive rights activists are now raising scrutiny about a member of the plaintiffs’ legal team: Erin Morrow Hawley, an attorney and the wife of Missouri senator Josh Hawley.

The case, which is playing out in a courtroom in rural Texas, could have the most far-reaching ramifications on abortion access in the United States since the fall of Roe v. Wade. Should the judge, Matthew Kacsmaryk, rule in favor of the plaintiffs in the case and issue a preliminary injunction, it could effectively block the use of mifepristone, one of two drugs used in medication abortions, which account for more than half of all abortions in the US. Hawley is one of the main lawyers arguing on behalf of conservative legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom, which sued the Food and Drug Administration last November for its approval of the abortion medication.

[….]

It was easy to check:

Lucas Kunce @LucasKunceMO
First, Matthew Kacsmaryk donated to Hawley’s campaign. Then, Hawley voted to make Kacsmaryk a federal judge. Now, Kacsmaryk just ruled in favor of a suit led by Hawley’s wife to ban abortion meds.

Hawley’s name is all over a nationwide effort to ban abortion without exceptions.

I double dare any lawyer to read this analysis and not see the jaw dropping incompetence of this right-wing-ideological-hack judge in Texas. It is astounding.

Missouri barbecue.

Lucas Kunce (D) an announced candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in 2024 held a campaign event at Gates on Main in Kansas City, Missouri this evening. The location was no accident. Right, Josh (r)?

Lucas Kunce (D).

There was a crowd.

Lucas Kunce (D) spent most of the evening in the one-on-one conversations crucial to retail politics. He did briefly address the crowd about an hour in to the event.

Lucas Kunce (D), a primary candidate in the 2022 open seat Senate race, has released a video announcing that he’s running in 2024 for the seat currently occupied by Josh Hawley (r):

Transcript:

My name is Lucas Kunce.

I’ve done a lot of running in my life,
running to stay healthy, running to fight for my country,
running to defend democracy.

Oh, and by the way, that guy you’re looking at,
that’s not me.

That’s our current U.S. Senator, Josh Hawley.
This guy.

Or maybe you’d better recognize him running for his life
a few hours later.

I swear, this coward’s always running from something.

And now this is the guy who’s writing a book,
telling every single one of us how to be a man.

Now, this is me, Lucas Kunce, running for Senate.
I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth,
but I did have the support of my community,
which made me who I am today.

When things get tough,
Missourians deserve a U.S. Senator
who will stand up for them – not run away.
That’s why I’m running to replace Josh Hawley.
Because we couldn’t be more different.

When his banker daddy sent Joshua to a fancy prep school
miles from his hometown,
my family in Jeff City was relying
on our neighbors to survive bankruptcy and medical bills.
When he graduated from law school,
he joined one of the world’s most elite corporate law firms.

I joined the Marine Corps to pay back
the community that took care of me.

When he was climbing the ladder
to become another corrupt politician,
I was serving my country
and working to put an end to overseas wars.

When giant corporations were stripping Missouri for parts,
he attacked workers and shipped our jobs away,
while I fought to take power back
for American workers and small businesses.

And when he voted against relief for vets
like me who were exposed to toxic burn pits,
I stood up alongside thousands of veterans
to hold him accountable.

I’m Lucas Kunce, and I approve this message,
because Josh Hawley is a fraud and a coward.
And by the time I’m done with him,
the whole world’s gonna know it.

So keep on running, Josh, keep on running.

Dayam.

Today, from Lucas Kunce (D):

On an old cracked street in Jeff City, Missouri sits a forgotten house. A place I used to call home, full of memories, good times, and tough times.

Growing up, my family struggled. My sister was born with a heart condition. The hospital bills kept coming and my parents eventually went bankrupt.

But then, our neighbors and friends lifted us up. They gave me the chance to make something of myself.

So I did. I went to Yale and became a U.S. Marine to honor those who had given me so much.

But every time I came home, from Iraq and then Afghanistan, things had changed. The community I love had been hollowed out, jobs shipped away for Wall Street profits. The wealth of our state sucked dry by guys like Josh Hawley and Roy Blunt, and their top donors who got rich stripping our communities for parts.

The house I called home sits empty now, but Missouri is still standing. It’s time to Marshall Plan the Midwest. Fight to invest right here in the heartland where we’ve been making things for generations.

We’ll replace the broken system that divides us, break the grip of corporate power, join together black, white and brown,
young and old.

This is where we build our future, on the cracked streets, in the forgotten neighborhoods.

This campaign ain’t playing around. They’re good. Lucas Kunce (D).
