It does.

I drove by a few precinct polling places in town this morning. The parking lots are full. The word is that close to 5000 voters in our county chose to vote absentee or no-excuse absentee (early voting).

There where a few people parked across the road from the entrance from my polling precinct. They were looking at their phones. They had an anti-choice “No” on Amendment 3 yard sign planted next to them. They looked familiar.

Missouri Abortion Rights Initiative Petition, Amendment 3, Officially Verified and Set for the November Ballot

August 13, 2024

More than 380,000 Missourians from All 114 Counties Signed the Petition to End Missouri’s Cruel Abortion Ban at the Ballot Box

Missouri — Today, the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office officially verified that Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, the coalition committed to ending Missouri’s abortion ban, submitted enough signatures to put the Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative on the ballot on November 5, 2024. A YES vote on Amendment 3 will give Missouri women and doctors the freedom to make decisions around pregnancy — including abortion, birth control, and miscarriage care — free from political interference.

Rachel Sweet, Campaign Manager for Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, said:

“This is a major step forward for our campaign and for Missourians who want to end our state’s cruel abortion ban. The successful submission of more than 380,000 signatures, collected from all 114 counties in Missouri, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of thousands of volunteers and supporters who believe we must end Missouri’s total abortion ban.”

“As we turn our attention to the November ballot, it’s clear Missourians overwhelmingly support reproductive freedom and will have the chance to make their voices heard at the ballot box. We are ready to fight so all Missourians can take back the freedom to make their own health care decisions.”

Mallory Schwarz, Abortion Action Missouri [2024 file photo].

Mallory Schwarz, Executive Director for Abortion Action Missouri, said:

“Right now in Missouri, abortion is banned, patients are being turned away from emergency rooms, and doctor’s hands are tied by politicians. This amendment is about making sure pregnant Missourians get the care they need without delay or restrictions.”

“A yes vote ends the abortion ban so that Missouri patients, families, and doctors can make personal and private decisions about pregnancy and abortion care, without politicians interfering. This amendment, this effort to end Missouri’s abortion ban is Missouri-grown. Missourians from Cape Girardeau to Maryville have been working together and taking action to make this initiative a reality. We’re committed to this cause because we live here; we’ve grown up here; we have families here; and we are taking back what’s ours.”

Tori Schafer, ACLU Missouri [2024 file photo].

Tori Schafer, Director for Policy and Campaigns for ACLU of Missouri, said:

“Voting YES on this amendment ends Missouri’s extreme, cruel abortion ban. Amendment 3 is crucial for restoring fundamental rights and ensuring that all Missourians have access to reproductive health care. This is about safeguarding our freedoms and protecting the health and dignity of every person in our state so that decisions around abortion, birth control, and miscarriage care are left up to patients and their families – not politicians.”

Dr. Selina Sandoval, Associate Medical Director for Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, said:

“Patients’ lives are at risk every day in Missouri because extremist politicians banned abortion. We can and we are going to change that in November. As a physician, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact this ban has had on Missouri patients, many of whom travel hours from home if they can get an appointment, while others simply cannot access care. In all my years of training – medical school, residency, fellowship – I was never taught how to explain to a patient why their rights depended on their zip code. As Missourians, we deserve better, and I am grateful to the volunteers and advocates who have worked tirelessly to make sure my hands are not tied by politicians and my patients can access life-affirming care.”

Margot Riphagen, Vice President of External Affairs for Planned Parenthood Great Rivers Action, said:

“Missourians have been suffering under a total abortion ban with no exceptions, leaving women and families in unimaginable circumstances. Politicians in Jefferson City have stripped away access to essential reproductive health care, forcing Missourians to face dangerous pregnancy complications without the care they need, particularly in rural parts of the state where access to reproductive care is already limited.”

“This cruel and unjust ban has put countless lives at risk and denied people the fundamental right to make their own health care decisions. By passing this amendment, we can end Missouri’s total abortion ban and ensure that Missourians regain access to comprehensive reproductive health care. It’s time to put control back in the hands of individuals and protect the health and dignity of our communities.”

Now, it’s Missouri’s turn.

“My body, my choice”

Missourians for Constitutional Freedom is a statewide coalition of organizations and concerned citizens from across the state working to establish the right for all Missourians to make decisions about our own reproductive health care – including abortion, birth control, and miscarriage care – without interference from out-of-touch politicians.

The decision of whether or not to have an abortion is a personal choice that should be made by Missourians, their families, and their health care providers – not politicians in Jefferson City. Passing this amendment will end our state’s abortion ban and make sure Missourians and their families can once again make the decisions that are best for them. Decisions around pregnancy, including abortion, birth control, and miscarriage care are personal and private and should be left up to patients and their families. But here in Missouri, politicians are making that decision for us.

We are coming together to end Missouri’s cruel total ban on abortion and give the power to make personal health care decisions back to where it belongs – to the people.

We are required to collect 172,000 valid signatures by May 5th, 2024, to ensure Missourians get to vote on ending our cruel abortion ban at the ballot.

Make sure you’re signing the correct initiative petition.

“Woman Rights” – July 9, 2022

Official ballot title certified by Secretary of State on November 28, 2023.

Constitutional Amendment to Article I, Relating to Reproductive Health Care, version 10
2024-086

[….]

OFFICIAL BALLOT TITLE AS CERTIFIED BY
SECRETARY OF STATE

Do you want to amend the Missouri Constitution to:

– establish a right to make decisions about reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives, with any governmental interference of that right presumed invalid;
– remove Missouri’s ban on abortion;
– allow regulation of reproductive health care to improve or maintain the health of the patient;
– require the government not to discriminate, in government programs, funding, and other activities, against persons providing or obtaining reproductive health care; and
– allow abortion to be restricted or banned after Fetal Viability except to protect the life or health of the woman?
– State governmental entities estimate no costs or savings, but unknown impact. Local governmental entities estimate costs of at least $51,000 annually in reduced tax revenues. Opponents estimate a potentially significant loss to state revenue.

Jill Schupp (D) versus the legacy (r) in the 24th Senate District

24th Senate District, choice, Jill Schupp, John Ashcroft, missouri

A television ad:

various: Jay Ashcroft doesn’t trust women to make decisions about their bodies. I’m worried Ashcroft would limit my access, my access to birth control. I’m worried Ashcroft wants to outlaw abortion, even in cases of rape or incest. I’m worried Ashcroft will be another Todd Akin. We need someone we can trust.

Jill Schupp: I’m Jill Schupp and unlike Jay Ashcroft I trust women to make these important decisions. I’ll always protect a woman’s right to choose and access to birth control because I trust Missouri women.

There are plenty more reasons to vote for Jill Schupp over the legacy in the 24th Senate District race. In the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Editorial: Care about Medicaid expansion? Vote for Jill Schupp

[….]

….We endorse Ms. Schupp to be the next state senator from the 24th District.

Her experience, her clear positions on Medicaid expansion and a variety of other issues, and the Senate’s desperate need for more ideological balance make Ms. Schupp the clear choice over political newcomer Jay Ashcroft, a Republican from unincorporated west St. Louis County.

Mr. Ashcroft is the son of former Missouri Gov. John Ashcroft, who went on to become a U.S. senator and U.S. attorney general before starting a Clayton law practice, where the younger Ashcroft also works. Mr. Ashcroft has never held political office, and his inexperience shows in his lack of clarity on key issues….

[….]

“…his inexperience shows in his lack of clarity on key issues…”

For right wingnut republicans that’s a feature, not a bug.
