The Warrensburg, Missouri “No Kings” demonstration was scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. downtown on the lawn of the Johnson County Courthouse. We arrived on the lawn about 30 minutes before the official start. By the end of the rally there were approximately 500 in attendance, with people with signs facing Holden Street. The sky was sunny, the temperature was in the 80s, with many seeking the shade.

There was no march (it was too hot), there were speeches. There was no sound system.

There were several Warrensburg Police officers keeping watch. There was a significant amount of supportive horn honking from passing vehicles. There was one passing “smoker” truck displaying the frustration of an owner who was probably upside down on his payments.

“The Constitution is not a suggestion”

“Resist!”

“We have a Constitution, not a king”

“No Kings or tyrants in America!”

“More Cats, Less Fascism”

“No Kings”

“Nicaragua”

“No Kings…”

“No Kings in America, since 1776”

“When ignorance reigns, life is lost”

“No King”

“When cruelty becomes normal, compassion looks radical”

On Saturday hundreds of thousands of Americans will take to the streets across the country to protest the travesty which is the second Trump Administration. You can find a location near you via No Kings. At last word there were close to 2000 scheduled events.

The “No Kings” event in Warrensburg, Missouri will start at 1:00 p.m. downtown at the Johnson County Courthouse.

Yesterday:

Johnson County Missouri Democratic Central Committee

STATEMENT FOR PUBLIC RELEASE – JUNE 12 2025

Protests – Exercising your rights and staying safe

The protests in Los Angeles for the past several days and those anticipated nationwide this weekend, Saturday June 14, raise our awareness of First Amendment speech, personal constitutional rights and the role of the government(s) – national, state and local – to maintain law and order.

First, the JoCo Democratic Central Committee believes that the protests which have occurred in west central Missouri are vitally important to draw attention to the conduct of those who continue to ignore the rule of law, especially related to immigrants. We have participated in these events, gratefully exercising one of our most fundamental rights – the right to speak our minds even if critical of government action.

Second, America was and is made better by the vast majority of immigrants — and all of us, except Native Americans—descend from immigrant ancestors. Our diversity for 250 plus years has made the U.S. (to quote a former President of the other party), a “shining city on a hill” for the rest of the world.

Protesting is good and sometimes necessary, just like our founders believed.

Breaking the law and/or engaging in violence is wrong and distracts from the message we are trying to send the American people—that message: You can and should stand up for your own rights and that of other people in this country.

This weekend, if you choose to protest – and please do -, please be aware of your surroundings to keep yourself and your cherished friends safe while protesting. Show respect not only for those whose rights are at issue, but also for law enforcement – they have a job to do too and need your cooperation to do it.

We will participate in a peaceful protest at 1 pm on the 14 June at the Johnson County Courthouse, 300 N. Holden Street in Warrensburg.

Finally, remember our fellow Americans in Los Angeles and support them in whatever lawful way you choose —as we hope and try to avoid major violence there, in other major American cities and in our own backyard this summer. Stay strong and be safe.

Today, in response to Gov. Mike Kehoe’s (r) executive order activating the Missouri National Guard:

[June 12, 2025]

‘BLATANT ATTEMPT TO INTIMIDATE’ | House Minority Leader Ashley Aune released a statement on behalf of the Missouri House Democratic Caucus in response to the completely unwarranted state of emergency declaration by Gov. Mike Kehoe.

LET’S BE CLEAR: This is nothing more than an attempt to intimidate and suppress peaceful protest of the federal administration that’s descending into authoritarianism at an alarming pace.

These protests are in response to the very obvious and unabashed transfer of wealth and power to the nation’s billionaire class at the expense of working Americans, regardless of their political affiliation.

“Governor Kehoe should staunchly defend the rights of Missourians, not mimic the authoritarianism of the president,” Aune said.

‘Governor Kehoe’s preemptive declaration of a state of emergency as Missourians prepare to protest an increasingly authoritarian presidential administration is a blatant attempt to intimidate and suppress First Amendment rights.

The protests planned this weekend across Missouri and throughout the nation were sparked by the president’s unwarranted and heavy-handed military responseto opposition to his policies. By doing the same, the governor will only heighten tensions and increase the possibility of conflict.

Governor Kehoe should staunchly defend the rights of Missourians, not mmic the authoritarianism of the president.’

See you all on Saturday.

Mayor Lucas’s Office Responds to Governor Kehoe’s National Guard Activation:

[….] The Office of Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas issued the following statement in response to Governor Mike Kehoe’s Executive Order 25-25 activating the Missouri National Guard ahead of planned demonstrations:

‘Mayor Lucas is concerned with enhanced state enforcement for one set of protesters, but no action or aid to local law enforcement when Neo-Nazis march through Missouri’s urban streets. The Mayor has confidence in responsible protestors to use their First Amendment rights peacefully and in compliance with the law. More than one thousand Kansas Citians protested peacefully and responsibly just days ago. For those who do not act responsibly, the Mayor stands by the women and men of local law enforcement at KCPD and other agencies to handle any necessary enforcement actions. Unnecessary escalation from our nation’s capital and state capitals undermines local law enforcement and makes all less safe.’

Again, today, people in Warrensburg, Missouri showed up.

Starting at around 5:00 p.m. people gathered on the Johnson County Courthouse lawn in downtown Warrensburg for march and rally protesting the continuing travesty which is the second Trump Administration. By the time the march started there were around 100 people marching.

After gathering on the lawn (and visiting, and voter registration) the organizers had an invocation, then communicated the march route and rally agenda. Local law enforcement agencies blocked the intersections while the marchers were in the street on their way to the amphitheater on the University of Central Missouri campus.

Missouri House Democratic Leader Representative Ashley Aune and Representative Ray Reed (D) participated in the rally and march.

“Resist Now. Because it is easier than hiding a family in your attic later.”

“Only YOU can prevent Fascism”

“Respect my existence…”

Missouri House Democratic Leader, Representative Ashley Aune.

Representative Ray Reed (D).

“MO GOP hates voters”

“We the people…”

“Resist”

“My body, my choice”

At the amphitheater:

“I want to live without fear”

As do we all.

“Resist”

“No King”

We drove thirty minutes south to Clinton, Missouri on Saturday morning for an 11:30 a.m. gathering near the town square. For the past several months a group of concerned “non-partisan” citizens have been meeting weekly to figure out what they can do to oppose the current authoritarian administration. They decided to organize a teach-in (they didn’t call it that) and a march around the downtown area at noon. Clinton, Missouri is a town of around 9400 people and is the seat of Henry County. It is touted by the locals as the gateway to the Lake of the Ozarks.

We showed up at the appointed time. These folks aren’t the usual suspects for this type of activism. I’ve known some to many of the Democratic Party people around these parts, off and on, for over thirty years. This ain’t them.

The organizers used social media to promote their event. They told me that they had been planning this event for a long time and that none of them had ever organized a public protest before.

Long story, shorter: around forty people showed up (with signs), they had their teach-in (Fascism is bad, Fascism is happening here now), there were donuts, there were march marshals, the local gendarmes were notified that this was happening, and there was a march.

Here’s the thing. This was a big undertaking for them, they were thorough, they did it right (no major incidents). This was their first, they’re doing it again on (gasp) May Day. In Clinton, Missouri.

“Your vote matters”

“Resist Now”

“ICE is the new Gestapo”

If this kind of thing is happening across America, then there may, indeed, be something going on.

“Prejudice is not Patriotism”

“No Kings”

“No Kings”

A guy with two cameras (including a long lens on a monopod) with media credentials tends to tamp down the instinct of right wingnuts to get all confrontational. In three separate instances pointing the camera at them from a distance set off their radar, they’d turn away and then shrivel up as if they were slugs and a long ton of highway department road salt got dumped on them.

A truck stopped in traffic at a green light, next to the protesters, windows down. One of the parade marshals called out several times, “You can go now.” The truck stayed. I turned to photograph the driver and he called out to me, “No you don’t.” The shutter wouldn’t move since the lens was set to 10 meters and I was too close to the subject. He then drove off. I did get that.

“Bless your heart”

One memorable challenger almost prompted me to ask her how the Meth cooking was going this season.

Another bejeweled and betattooed person who had turned out from a health food parlor on the square, ostensibly to heckle everyone with “I like Elon Musk”, turned back inside when she saw the camera and then flipped me off from the shadows. I got the shot because Lightroom is my friend. She was wearing a I John 4:10 tee-shirt and had a pseudo runic dove tattoo on her right forearm.

Cue Gandhi.

I had a good time and I got nice images.

It was a good day.

On the Henry County courthouse lawn.
