51st Legislative District, Dean Dohrman, Gary Grigsby, mail, missouri

Here’s another disingenuous piece of campaign mail on behalf of Dean Dohrman (r), the incumbent republican in the 51st Legislative District –  received today and paid for by the Missouri republican party:

Somebody has it backwards, but it’s Dean Dohrman (r).

Think about that for a moment.

Gary Grigsby, the Democratic Party candidate in the 51st Legislative District doesn’t presently serve in the Missouri General Assembly. Gary Grigsby has never served in the Missouri General Assembly. He does not nor has he ever had the ability to vote for or against a bill on the floor of the House.

Meanwhile, Dean Dohrman (r) spent his time in the General Assembly in Jefferson City voting against Sharia Law, voting against Agenda 21, and voting for nullification (which was settled 150 years ago). Nope, nothing on jobs.

Dean Dohrman (r) did vote to screw education (and the University of Central Missouri) in his district. School Boards across the state opposed that ill conceived cut to public education for the benefit of the wealthiest few.

Dean Dohrman (r) did vote to allow the state to intrude on an individual’s medical decisions.

With no record of legitimate legislative achievement to speak of Dean Dohrman’s (r) benefactors in the Missouri republican party have to resort to mailers like this.

And look who else has been propping up Dean Dohrman’s (r) campaign recently (via the Missouri Ethics Commission):

C111221 10/13/2014 COMMITTEE TO ELECT DEAN DOHRMAN STATE REPRESENTATIVE House Republican Campaign Committee PO Box 1313 Jefferson City MO 65102 10/13/2014 $26,804.66

2014, 51st Legislative District, Dean Dohrman, Gary Grigsby, missouri

A campaign mail piece from Dean Dohrman (r), the incumbent in the 51st Legislative District race:

Dean Dohrman’s (r) first 2014 campaign mailing.

So, apparently, Dean Dohrman (r) is running against Barrack Obama. Interestingly, he spends his time in Jefferson City voting against Sharia Law, voting against Agenda 21, and voting for nullification (which was settled 150 years ago). Nope, nothing about jobs in all of that.

Dean Dohrman (r) did vote to screw education (and the University of Central Missouri) in his district.

Dean Dohrman (r) did vote to allow the state to intrude on an individual’s medical decisions.

Let’s see. It’s paid for by the Missouri republican party (they’ve been getting a lot of cash recently from the HRCC), and there are endorsement logos from Missouri Right to Life, the NRA, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, and the Missouri Chamber – all functionally republican front organizations.

There’s irony everywhere. Consider this: Gary Grigsby, the Democratic Party candidate in the 51st Legislative District, is an independent businessman. And a former Marine. And a former school teacher. And he serves on the Warrensburg school board.

Oh, by the way, the photography on this particular mailer sucks.

2014, 2016, 51st Legislative District, ACA, Agenda 21, Claire McCaskill, Dean Dohrman, Gary Grigsby, General Assembly, Hillary Clinton, Medicaid expansion, missouri, nullification, Sharia law

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) met for coffee early this morning in downtown Warrensburg with Johnson County Democrats (and anyone else who showed up). She spoke at length about the 2014 election, the Missouri General Assembly, Medicaid expansion, the Affordable Care Act, and also took questions.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) in Warrensburg – October 8, 2014.

[….]

Senator Claire McCaskill (D): ….I have watched, from afar, Jefferson City. And, you know, um, I’ve spent some time in Jefferson City. And it isn’t as if I don’t understand what this state is. I think you all know I get Missouri….I get that there are a lot of conservative people in this state. But if you step back from it and you look and you see that I have been elected and reelected statewide four times. [Governor] Jay Nixon has been elected and reelected state, in statewide office one, two, three, four, five, six times. [Secretary of State] Jason Kander was elected, [State Treasurer] Clint Zweifel was elected, [Attorney General] Chris Koster was elected. All of these are Democrats that are winning statewide. Now how do you reconcile that with the Missouri legislature, because the Missouri legislature is way, way, way to the right? It’s so far to the right you can hardly see it on the horizon. And the reason that’s happened is because of two things. One, they controlled redistricting, but, more importantly is because they have recruited candidates, funded candidates, and helped candidates run and win and….we behaved, well, you know, that Jeff City, it just is hopeless. You know, they’re in charge and there’s nothing we can do. Well, they cast votes that are completely out of step with most Missourians. I guarantee you they’re out of step with the people that would be in Gary [Grigsby]’s district [51st Legislative District]. Um, I could go through a list. I mean, how many Missourians want them to be spending time on Sharia law? Um, how many Missourians really think Agenda 21 is a problem? How many Missourians think it’s a good idea to tell the local sheriff and the local police department that if they’re gonna work on an interdisciplinary task force with Federal officers they could go to jail if they arrest somebody in that effort that has a gun that’s prohibited by the Federal government. They wanted to put local law enforcement in jail for cooperating in a Federal investigation that could involve guns. I mean, this is crazy time….

[….]

…You know what people of this state want from their state legislature? They want good roads and bridges, they want good public education, and they want to make sure that their money is being spent wisely. They don’t want rape victims to have to wait three days to terminate a pregnancy that their rapist caused. They don’t want that. Vast majority of Missourians do not want that….

[….]

Question: …You must fight, the Democrats must fight no matter what happens in November, it [the Affordable Care Act – “Obamacare”] must not be repealed.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D): Well, it won’t be repealed as long as, uh, Barrack Obama is President of the United States. Um, and I do, I will tell you that I think our, I’m traveling next week on behalf of my colleagues, I do think that, um, we are in pretty good shape. It’s gonna be close across the country. Um, but I will be surprised if we don’t hold on….

[….]

….The election that will determine the future of health care reform in this country, as to whether or not we continue down the path, will be, um, electing Hillary Clinton in, in twenty-sixteen. I will be back here and this place will be full, wall to wall, with people, I hope, working, um, on behalf of Hillary Clinton in twenty-sixteen.

Question: I think the one, the one issue that the state Republicans are the most opposite of their constituents is on Medicaid expansion. Because, a lot of my Republican friends, that is the one thing that they are really the most distressed about, is that we haven’t expanded Medicaid in the state and we didn’t accept the Federal money, because they have family members who should be Medicaid eligible and are not. And I see that’s just the most vulnerable issue for these, for, you know, at least our state representatives is that they didn’t support that.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D): There are, we have three hundred thousand Missourians, so you can speak to this when people that you, you talk to them, we have three hundred thousand Missourians who are working. You know, when people hear Medicaid I think they think of people that aren’t working. These are people that are working. They are working two and three jobs. They are making too little money to get on the [ACA] exchanges, but they make more money than they can do to get Medicaid. So, the, the weird thing is that, um, you know, we’ve got this gap. And that is all because they have turned down the Federal money that would, that would expand. [voice: “Our Federal money.”]  Our Federal money is going to other states for their health care. And it is really hurting rural Missouri, uh, because in many rural communities the number one employer is the hospital. And these hospitals are dying on the vine. I mean, they are desperate. And that’s the irony, is the reddest parts of the state are gonna suffer the most  ’cause that’s where a lot of the working poor are, people that are working two or three minimum wage jobs and don’t have insurance at work. And they can’t, they can’t get on the exchanges and they don’t qualify for Medicaid. Um, so it is really crazy. I mean, it would be, imagine if the Republicans said, you know, we’re not gonna take Federal Highway funding. They might cut it off some day so we better not take it. [laughter[ Let’s just not take Federal highway funding. We don’t want our money that we’ve paid, come back for our highways, because it’s the Federal government. And they might cut it off some day and then we’d be left holding the bag. And I’m like, well, I think you’re holding the bag now because, guess where all those people are going for health care? They’re going to hospitals who are treating them and then they’re passing on the bills to Missourians. It’s like a huge hidden tax increase. It’s craziness. And the only reason they won’t expand it is because they think it’s connected to Obamacare. So, it’s about the political messaging of Obamacare, it’s not about Missourians. It’s really unbelievable….

51st Legislative District, 72 hours, abortion, Dean Dohrman, Gary Grigsby, HB 1307, missouriGeneral Assembly, override, veto, waiting period

Gary Grigsby, the Democratic Party candidate in the 51st Legislative District issued the following release on yesterday’s veto override vote of HB 1307 – the bill adding a seventy-two hour waiting period for an abortion:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 11, 2014

[….]

REPRESENTATIVE DEAN DOHRMAN SUPPORTED EXTREME ABORTION BILL TO TRIPLE MANDATORY DELAY

JEFFERSON CITY- On Wednesday, the Missouri Legislature convened during its constitutionally scheduled veto session to take up a number of bills that were vetoed by Democratic Governor Jay Nixon.   In a vote of 117-44, the legislature overrode the Governor’s veto and added a 72 hour mandatory delay on all women seeking abortions in the state, including those who are victims of rape and incest.

Of the 144 votes, Representative Dean Dohrman supported the measure to add the needless waiting period, which is one of the most extreme in the country.  “This extreme bill adds another layer of government intrusion and stress to an already traumatic time,” said his opponent Gary Grigsby.

“It’s time that our legislature focused on the important task of creating jobs and making our schools better instead of taking away decisions that should be left to a woman, her family, and her doctor.”  Grigsby continued, “This bill further traumatizes victims by prolonging their grief.  The legislation is insensitive, wrong-headed, and has no place in Missouri.”

“This is just another example where the Missouri Legislature has added one more layer of invasive government regulations to women’s health.  The sole purpose of tripling the waiting period is nothing more than a way to score political points at the expense of victims.  These decisions should be made in a doctor’s office and not in Jefferson City,” said Grigsby.  “There is no discernible impact on the number of abortions but the consequences for women are real.”

House Bill 1307  (Sponsored by Kevin Elmer R-Nixa) expands the current 24 hour waiting period on abortions to 72 hours and does not make exceptions for victims of rape and incest.  This legislation is representative of the extreme nature in which the Republican Super-Majority has moved in our state.

Gary Grigsby is running against Representative Dohrman for the 51st District in the Missouri House of Representatives which includes the parts of Saline, Pettis, and Johnson Counties.

A candidate can raise more money, they can get more volunteers, the can buy more signs, they can send more mail – what they can’t buy or get is more time. The candidate one on one with the voter and campaign direct contact has to be in operation now.

Getting more Missouri Democrats elected in 2012 would have helped Gov. Jay Nixon now

April 25

By STEVE KRASKE

The Kansas City Star

Gary Grigsby needed just 471 votes. Paul Quinn needed 583. For Mark Ellebracht, the magic number was 214.

All are Democrats who needed just a nudge from a popular governor like Jay Nixon to put them over the top in their state representative races in 2012….

….Even if Nixon succeeds in killing the current measure, Republicans have time this session to revise it, putting the governor in the same jam.

He has no one to blame but himself. In 2012, he could have done more.

Morgan gets that Nixon sold himself as a different sort of politician who is not ideologically driven. He has a tough Republican legislature to deal with. Any pol wants a big re-election win.

But a more engaged Nixon would have put 10 more D’s into House seats, he said.

“He’s looking out for himself.”

One vote.

A letter to the editor written by Gary Grigsby – a member of the Warrensburg R-VI school board and current Democratic Party candidate in the 51st Legislative District, appeared in yesterday’s Warrensburg Daily Star Journal:

[….]

Senate Bill 509, also known as SB509, has been passed by the Missouri Legislature and sent to Governor Nixon for consideration.  The provisions of the Missouri Constitution (Article III, Section 31) provide 15 days for the Governor to decide whether to sign into law or Veto the Bill.

Last year, the Legislature passed a similar tax cut Bill (HB253) in the waning days of the regular session.  Instead of 15 days, the Governor had 45 days to decide on that Bill.  His Veto then became the subject of an override attempt in the September Veto Session.  The Legislature may take up for reconsideration for overriding any Bill which was Vetoed by the Governor if the Veto occurs before the regular session ends.  It requires a two-thirds affirmative vote in both chambers of the Legislature.  House Bill 253 failed in the override attempt.

The effect of putting HB 253 into law was estimated to reduce the state foundation formula to the Warrensburg R-VI School District by a range of $931,428 to $1,612,088 which would have been about 8.5% to 14.6% of the foundation formula.  Superintendent Dr. Scott Patrick received projections that the minimal effect of SB509 would result in nearly $958,000 cut from the state foundation formula for the District.  We cannot sustain the legislature’s roller coaster budget ride and have reasonable plans to move education in the school district forward.

Opponents and proponents to the override of HB253 had several months to take their position to the public and receive feedback from the voters across the state on HB253.  We do not have the luxury of time with SB509 and need to express our opinions immediately to our elected representatives and to the Chair of the Senate Education Committee, our own Senator David Pearce.

The expected override attempt of the anticipated Veto is first voted in the chamber where the Bill originated – in this case the Senate.  If the override question receives a two-thirds vote in the Senate, then it is sent to the House for a similarly required two-thirds affirmative vote which would have the effect of putting that Bill into law.

Putting SB509 into law will gut public education, close Marshall and Higginsville Hab Centers along with about 5 others in the state, and shut down basic services to Missourians.

Call your state senator and/or representative and ask them to vote “No” on the override attempt.  Missouri schools are already struggling to maintain quality education and cannot sustain the effect of further cuts in state funding.

Gary Grigsby

Warrensburg, MO

The House will vote on the veto override this morning. And Representative Dean Dohrman (r) will be one of the votes for the override.

No Democrats filed in the 54th Legislative District against incumbent Representative (and Speaker Pro Tem) Denny Hoskins (r). Representative Dean Dohrman (r), legislative yes man and freshman representive, who narrowly won the 51st Legislative District seat in an open race with Gary Grigsby (D) in 2012 is facing a rematch in 2014. The 51st and 54th are neighboring districts.

The end result? Denny Hoskins (r) is free to prop up Dean Dohrman’s (r) campaign coffers since Representative Hoskins won’t have to spend any appreciable amount of money on his reelection effort.

In 1994, then U.S. Senate candidate John Ashcroft walked in the homecoming parade in Warrensburg. At the time, as a candidate, he repeatedly avoided expressing any opinion on Amendment 7, which was on the November ballot and which would have had devastating economic impact on institutions like the university. The crowd at the parade knew this. And they were going to let him know something else. John Ashcroft was loudly and continually heckled by individuals over the entire parade route.

The sole republican entry in the parade. Apparently there were no elephants available to pull the wagon.

Irony. Cue the regular commenter.

Via Twitter today, from Representative Vicky Hartzler (r):

Rep. Vicky Hartzler ‏@RepHartzler

Beautiful day for Homecoming at MU and UCM! Go Tigers! Good luck, Mules! 10:04 AM – 26 Oct 13

During “off” years in the election cycle fewer politicians participate in the populist tradition of walking in a college homecoming parade. ‘Tis the season, and since it’s an off year, not too many politicians participated in today’s parade in Warrensburg. Representative Vicky Hartzler (r) didn’t walk in the University of Central Missouri parade (as far as I could tell). We haven’t heard from anyone who saw her at the University of Missouri homecoming parade in Columbia (not that we checked with any diligence). We suspect if she did she would have posted a cheery blurb with a picture via Twitter.

Do you think if Representative Hartzler (r) had walked in the University of Central Missouri parade she would have heard from constituents who weren’t happy about her vote to keep the government shut down? You betcha.

Interestingly, Representatives Denny Hoskins (r) and Representative Dean Dohrman (r), who voted to screw the University of Central Missouri, didn’t walking in today’s parade either.

Do you think if Representatives Hoskins (r) and Dohrman (r) had walked in the parade they would have heard from constituents who were unhappy about their lack of support for the welfare of the university? You betcha.

If you heckle a politician in a parade and they’re not there to hear it because they were busy making potato soup, brats and chocolate sheet cake, will they notice your displeasure?

Gary Grigsby (D), a candidate for the 51st Legislative District did walk in today’s parade. He was greeted warmly by individuals in the crowd.

Gary Grigsby, the Democratic Party candidate in the 51st Legislative District.

Enthusiastic party identification by legislative candidates is rare these days.

Consultants tell candidates to not place their party identification on their signs. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy then, doesn’t it?
