Department of Natural Resources moves LGBTQ exhibit to Lohman Building

Lohman is part of Jefferson Landing State Historic SiteJEFFERSON CITY, MO, SEPT. 3, 2021 – The Missouri Department of Resources announced today that an exhibit detailing the history of the LGBTQ community in Missouri has been relocated for display at the Lohman Building, part of the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. The exhibit will be available for viewing beginning tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 4. (The Missouri State Museum and the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site will be closed Sunday and Monday for Labor Day.)
The Lohman Building is located adjacent to the Capitol and is easily accessible. Missouri State Museum team members staff and operate the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site.
The display was moved from the Missouri State Museum in the Capitol earlier this week after the department received complaints.
“We apologize for the way this unfolded,” said Dru Buntin, director of the Department of Natural Resources. “We agree the history of all Missourians is an important story that needs to be told, and we’ve made a commitment to work with the members of the State Capitol Commission and the Board of Public Buildings to do so.”
Careful review of the museum’s interpretive and exhibit guidance shows that exhibits on loan from other institutions like this one are often housed at Jefferson Landing State Historic Site.
The Making History: Kansas City and The Rise of Gay Rights exhibit is on loan to the Missouri State Museum from UMKC. The exhibit, which was produced by UMKC, was borrowed due to its connection to a notable date – the formation of the Phoenix Society of Individual Freedom – on the Missouri Bicentennial timeline on display in the museum’s History Hall. It is on loan through the end of the year.
“In response to a number of concerns, we made the decision to move the exhibit while we clarified and reviewed our internal process to make sure we were complying with state law,” said Mike Sutherland, deputy department director.
The Department of Natural Resources is charged with maintaining an historical state museum in the Capitol. The museum develops many of its exhibits, but it also accepts exhibits on loan from other institutions to expose visitors to a wide variety of topics significant in Missouri history and culture. State law requires the museum to coordinate with the Board of Public Buildings for the use of space in the Capitol. The board has delegated responsibility for that coordination to the Missouri State Capitol Commission.
The department invites the public to attend its Sept. 16 public meeting for the Missouri State Museum and Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Riverside Collections Facility, 117 Riverside Drive, Jefferson City. Following the informational meeting, museum staff will provide a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s collections area.

Governor offers false excuse for pulling LGBT exhibit“The Parson administration’s removal of an exhibit on LGBT history from the Missouri Capitol Museum was disappointing. That the governor lied about his reasons for doing so is indefensible. The statutory procedure the governor says wasn’t followed for approving exhibits does not exist. State law authorizes the Board of Public Buildings to allocate space to the museum but gives the board no power to determine the content of exhibits, and there is no evidence the board has ever done so. The governor had no justification for removing this exhibit and no excuse for not restoring it.”

With so many on your side of the political spectrum dissing both vax and masks for months now, we fully vaxxed folks cannot TRUST unvaxxed to mask up. Children are at risk. Need mandates to get these selfish anti vaxxers to do the right thing.

10,000 Covid deaths in Missouri and you recently bragged about providing extra ambulances to transport Covid patients to neighboring hospitals. This sends the message that Missourians getting sick and/or dying is preferred over wearing a piece of cloth on your face.
Gladly will wear a mask to help others… You know sacrifice for others is something your demographic is supposed to understand
Nope! People who live in communities, participate in communities and shop in communities need to wear mask regardless of vaccination. The vaccinated are protected enough to keep them out of the hospital but they are as contagious as the unvaccinated. Hence the spread AGAIN!!!!
I hate masks but I put one on every time I go indoors in a public space. If the CDC is “strongly recommending” it there might be a reason to be concerned. This should not be a political sticking point. Mask mandates in schools make sense. The schools will be isolating in weeks.
Why? Virologists have shown that breakthrough infections and transmission can very much happen among the vaccinated. So, why wouldn’t we want a mandate so that there is just that much more preventative action?
Now, how could we go about granting the vaccinated freer access w/o requiring a mask? Hmmmm… Something passport, I swear. What was it?
Why? If Missourians ONLY get a vaccine because they think it means they will never have to wear a mask again, then you have failed in your messaging regarding the benefits of the vaccine. Obviously the current measures are failing us and something else is needed. Masks work.
Not if it saves lives by stopping the spread of a potentially deadly virus. Wearing a mask says, “I live in a civil society and care about my actions and how they effect others”.
Yes, but we live in Missouri.
Don’t you realize that the vaccinated people are wearing masks to protect those that are too Young or too dumb to get vaccinated? Do you honestly think we want to wear masks? For Pete’s sake we’re just trying to save peoples lives.
Many of us who are vaccinated continue wearing our masks, Governor. Now Delta is spreading and everyone, vaccinated or not, is again at risk for transmission. Universal masking helps stop the spread. I trust my kid’s infectious disease doc about this more than you.
Why the stubbornness? The FACT that vaccinated people can both contract AND spread Covid is the reason vaccinated folks should also wear masks until you can get the vaccine in enough arms to reach hers immunity. It’s not that difficult to understand – quit being obtuse
I’m fully vaccinated and wear a mask for a two main reasons -1) my young children can’t be vaccinated at the moment 2) since I can still catch Covid, my mask adds more protection for those who aren’t vaccinated, either by choice or because they’re too young

Problem is, there is no way to tell who is vaccinated without requiring proof of vaccination. And the same people who refuse to wear masks are the same people (for the most part) that refuse to get vaccinated. So we’re all screwed.

AUGUST 6, 2021JEFFERSON CITY Today, Governor Mike Parson announced that Missouri is tripling the number of mutual aid ambulances that provide long-haul patient transfers to help reduce the rising COVID-19 caseloads straining hospitals. Thirty ambulances and more than 60 trained personnel are scheduled to begin arriving in five regions of the state today, August 6, 2021.
“The ambulance strike teams we positioned in Springfield have been extremely effective in helping save lives and ease the pressure on local hospitals,” Governor Parson said. “These 30 new ambulance teams triple our transport capacity and expand it to the entire state, as needed. Our health care professionals are performing heroically to save lives as the Delta variant dramatically increases hospital admissions. We will continue to support our health care heroes across the state.”
The new ambulance strike teams, provided in response to a request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, include 20 advanced life-support ambulances, five basic life-support ambulances, five specialty care ambulances, and required medical and support personnel. They are expected to begin transporting patients as early as Saturday. The teams are tasked with operating anywhere there is a critical need in Missouri through Sept. 5.
Ambulance strike teams will initially be positioned in Regions A (Kansas City area), B (northeast Missouri), D (southwest Missouri), G (south-central Missouri), and H (northwest Missouri) and have the ability to move as needed.
Thirteen federally-provided life support ambulances in southwest Missouri will replace the 10 ambulances provided through the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management and an Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) request from the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). The Arkansas teams will depart for home today. Since they began working in Missouri, the 10 ambulances have logged more than 53,000 miles on 223 patient transports. Some of those transports required roundtrips of seven to nine hours or more.
“Delta is the most aggressive and transmissible variant of COVID-19, and it is more important than ever to take advantage of the highly effective vaccines,” Governor Parson said. “Vaccination is the best way to prevent serious illness from COVID-19. Vaccinations are free and available across the state, often with no appointment necessary, and vaccinated Missourians will have their shot at $10,000 cash or $10,000 toward an education saving account. The Missouri Disaster Medical Assistance Team (MO DMAT-1) will continue to staff the state-run Monoclonal Antibody Centralized Infusion Center in Springfield. It reduces the strain on hospitals by treating COVID-19 patients who otherwise would require treatment in a hospital setting. Through Thursday, MO DMAT-1 staff had treated 243 patients at the infusion center since it opened on July 23. Monoclonal antibodies are proteins that can help your body fight off COVID-19 and reduce the risk of severe disease and hospitalization – if administered to high-risk patients soon after diagnosis.
The southwest Missouri ambulance strike teams and monoclonal antibody infusion facility were part of a resource request made to the state of Missouri by Greene County on July 14.

JEFFERSON CITY On Friday, July 30, 2021, Governor Mike Parson granted 12 pardons and approved two commutations pursuant to Article IV, Section 7 of the Constitution of the State of Missouri. Official documents have been filed with the appropriate government agencies and are being sent to the individuals.To review the names of the individuals granted clemency, please see attached. Governor Parson has instructed his legal team to continue reviewing clemency files and working to reduce the backlog inherited by his administration.
