Today:

Congressman Mark Alford
[May 14, 2025]
Look, Missouri is the Show Me State. So we’re going to ask people to show me why you should be receiving taxpayer dollars for Medicaid!
[….]

Some of the responses:

What a moron! You should know there is already a very rigorous application process with proof of income, age and or disability.

Who pays for your healthcare? Right taxpayers do. And yet you sit up there trying to take health insurance away from poor Americans. Shame on you. Why don’t you cough up your insurance. Maybe a few experience firsthand what it’s like to lose your insurance you’ll have a little more empathy.

He *is* compassionate. Just ask him!

If we are not taking care of our fellow citizens then why do we have a government?

Not really the government’s job.

I think you should go study civilizations and governments. You realy think it is not the job of our government to take care of its citizens? So we should disband fire departments, public hospitals, public schools, police departments, department of agriculture. No VA or FHA loans. No big construction projects for roads?

is it the Governments job to subsidize billionaires like Musk and Bezos?

I could of sworn the government was founded for the people by the people

You mean, the government’s job is to promote the general welfare?

Paying for tax cuts for the wealthy on the backs of the poor.

How in the world was this guy voted back into office? All I ever see is negative comments about him, which I agree with.

because ignorant people vote uninformed. That’s why Republicans love the uneducated.

Right wingnuts with money.

Yet we can find money for tax breaks for the rich. Spend money on space ships. And spend trillions on ” defense ” even though we are not at war.

we also can spend $1 billion to retrofit a jet given to Trump by murders. One that he plans on keeping after he leaves Office.

2/3 of nursing home patients are on Medicaid.
36.2% of Missouri children are covered by Medicaid and that number is 50% in rural areas.
66% of adults on Medicaid are working. Most of the rest are elderly, caretakers, or have disability.
In District 4, 83,000 children rely on Medicaid for health care. 16,000 seniors benefit.
People on Medicaid are healthier. They go to the doctor! People without health insurance delay or go without and have far worse health outcomes.
Here’s a thought: let the 2017 tac cuts expire.

It’s almost like this guy filled his entire stock of political and substantive policy knowledge by listening to Rush Limbaugh for a few weeks in the late-1990s – and nothing else! He carpet bagged his way into Congress, replacing the formerly most ignorant person in Congress (Vicky H.). You hold that honor now,

You’re supposed to be Helping the little guy. How can sending the poor into more poverty benefit our country. We look foolish not helping our people.

Even Josh Hawley knows this is wrong!

All of a sudden Mark Alford is worried about national debt except when it comes to giving tax breaks for those that don’t need tax breaks.

You’re looking for money to give more tax cuts for the wealthy.

What a joke. Im amazed his tongue didnt fly out of his mouth while saying that.

First off, where do you think the tax dollars are coming from? And as for asking “people to show me why” — aren’t the applications for the service enough? Do people have to show up in rags, covered in campfire ashes to qualify for the state’s concern?
Further, the general welfare of the people is why. I presume we want a functional and stable society for everyone. Is the Republican view really to have beggars in the street as a way of social life? “Please, sir. I want some more.”
We already have a problem with people rendered homeless for various reasons, do we really want to expand on that model?
[….]

Right wingnuts consider that a feature, not a bug.

Josh Hawley gets it. Why don’t you? NO, to taking away much needed health care just to give tax breaks to the super wealthy who already have too much! It’s IMMORAL!!

Medicaid pays for 2 of 3 seniors in Missouri nursing homes & 2 of 7 on disability. Seniors & disabled =24% of enrolled and get 60% of Medicaid payouts in MO. Of 19-64 yr olds on Medicaid in Mo 66% of them work. 1 in 3 kids in MO are on Medicaid. The reason is cause they are poor. Then 39% of births are pd for by Medicaid. Again..mothers are poor. What else can someone show you

Because my friends who need it will literally die without it? Because they can’t afford their medications? Because I would be homeless if we hadn’t been able to get it years ago when my son stayed a month in NICU, my husband worked full time and we HAD INSURANCE but STILL would be $20k out of pocket?

Wow, you are lucky enough to be in a position to do so much good for people and you choose to do this instead.

But somehow we can buy Greenland. We aren’t stupid Mark.

Mr. Alford, when will you have a real, in-person, town hall, instead of another meet and greet, or a rigged, virtual town halls where you get to pick who attends and what questions you’ll answer? Where you have to listen to your constituents instead of just talking at them to tell them your party’s line?

This is fair ONLY if you show me why you should receive taxpayer dollars for your healthcare. Because as far as i can tell, all you do is have coffee with constituents that agree with you. When’s the town hall?

How about you show people why you shouldn’t be voted out? Why don’t you show people that your oath the constitution actually means anything?

Alford sold his soul to the devil.

It’s not a reconciliation. You need to actually read the bill, and you are full of shit. You are empty of compassion

No, you are empty and NOT compassionate. You’re also inhumane you people have millions and millions dollars in your checking account with the average American living paycheck paycheck so I don’t know who you’re trying to convince you and that guy from CNN should be telling you the lies you are spewing!!!
The audacity this guy speaking about fraud your so-called president just took a $400 million BRIBE from the Saudi that attacked America. The audacity you people are shameless and inhumane is what you currently are [….]

Where were you when Trump 1.0 added about 8 Trillion to the debt? Dumbass.

Governor Eric Greitens (r) has ordered significant budget cuts, with higher education taking a significant hit. Over the years the republican controlled General Assembly has cut back the possibilities of revenue, creating a death spiral of diminishing revenue and continuous cuts in public investment.

‘Nobody was more disappointed about what happened yesterday than I was,’ says Sen. @calebrowden on @EricGreitens higher ed cuts. #moleg
2:37 PM – 17 Jan 2017

On May 6, 2014 the republican controlled General Assembly overrode then Governor Jay Nixon’s (D) veto of SB 509, an ill conceived bill which further exacerbates these same budgetary shackles and insures the Kansasfication of Missouri.

Then Representative (now Senator) Caleb Rowden’s (r) disappointment over the hits the University of Missouri (in his district) would take wasn’t evident (r) on May 6, 2014 when he voted [pdf] (Journal of the House, 1578) to override Governor Nixon’s veto.

Spare us the tears.
