We received the following press release late this afternoon:

Dr. Gordon Christensen has released the following statement.

“It is my pleasure and honor announcing to the citizens of the Missouri 4th Congressional District that I will seek the Democratic nomination to represent them in the House of Representatives.

All Missourians, whether they live on the farm or in the city, have to face the twin problems of increasingly expensive healthcare and increasingly difficult to get healthcare. So, to avoid the cost and the hassle, too many of us are not taking care of ourselves and our families. That only makes the problems worse. The Affordable Care Act promised to solve these problem; but to keep that promise, it needs more work both at the State and Federal level. As a physician, medical educator, and medical scientist, I intend to use my knowledge of medical care to improve the delivery of healthcare and reduce the cost of medical care for all Missourians.

As a physician, I know that all adults have the right to make their own health care decisions. This right, known as the right of Autonomy, is the central principle of medical ethics. Among other things, the right to self-determination means you can decide what medical care is best for you. This principle applies to all medical decisions including women’s healthcare and this is a principle that Congress needs to understand. Personal medical decisions should be between the patient and the doctor, not government.

All Missourians, as are all Americans, are indebted to the men and women who, by serving in the armed forces, dedicated their lives to protecting us. Our Veterans are our Heroes. We have pledged to care for them, just as they took care of us. The Department of Veterans Affairs – the ‘VA’ – has provided this care since the end of World War II. I was a VA physician for 20 years; my wife, Alice, is a VA clinical psychologist – she has worked for the VA for more than 25 years. I know that the VA is staffed by dedicated professionals who only want to do the best for our Veterans. I also know that all too often the VA fails to keep the promise of caring for our Veterans. This disservice simply cannot be tolerated. I know from my personal experience as a VA whistleblower and from my appearances before Congressional Committees, that many of the problems within the VA are due to poor Congressional oversight of the VA. I intend to fix this.

The uniquely American entrepreneurial spirit is a key driver of well-paying jobs and economic growth in the 21st century global economy. As your representative in Congress I will work toward economic security for all citizens by promoting policies that will stimulate small business and economic growth for everyone. I will also address the growing problem of the shrinking middle class in our district and country. The middle class has become a casualty of the dysfunction of the current Congress. My opponent is part of that dysfunction.

It is strange, but true, that in the 21st century, so many of our public concerns are concerns about healthcare. I have been a licensed, practicing, physician for more than 41 years. I am certified in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and tropical medicine. I have been a medical educator for more than 36 years. I am a medical scientist whose discoveries have changed the practice of medicine. I have been a medical and educational leader at the University of Missouri where I have worked for more than 27 years and where I have been the Chief of Staff of the University of Missouri Hospital and the leader of the University of Missouri faculty government. Finally, I have demonstrated my willingness to do what is best for patients, even if my speaking truth to power comes at great personal cost. I am prepared to lead the way for all Missourians to a better life in the 21st century. The time is now to put a physician in the house!”

Jim White (D) and incumbent Vicky Hartzler (r) are also candidates in the 4th Congressional District.

He spoke briefly to those in attendance, citing the needs to improve health care delivery for veterans and for access to affordable health care for all Americans. He also addressed the current dysfunction in the republican controlled Congress – calling the creation of the Planned Parenthood committee and Representative Vicky Hartzler’s (r) appointment to it nothing more than political theater.

The seat is currently held by Vicky Hartzler (r). Democrat Jim White is also running and has established a committee.

4th Congressional District, Harrisonville, Iran, Jim White, missouri, nuclear deal, town hall, Vicky Hartzler

From the White House:

[….]

This deal ensures IAEA access when needed, where needed to verify the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. “Anytime, anywhere” inspections are simply unnecessary thanks to the deal.

Under this deal, Iran will allow robust monitoring of all its nuclear facilities. IAEA inspectors have the right to a physical or technical presence in all of Iran’s nuclear sites and will conduct regular monitoring of Iran’s entire nuclear fuel cycle and supply chain, from uranium mines and mills to centrifuge production, assembly, and storage facilities. This means Iran would need to set up an entirely parallel set of facilities and a separate supply chain if it sought to have a covert nuclear weapons program. This kind of program would be extremely difficult to hide under this deal. Standard practice under the Additional Protocol, which Iran will implement under this deal, is that the IAEA can request access to any suspicious location with 24 hours’ notice. This deal does not change that baseline.

But there are situations in which the IAEA and a State might negotiate the terms of access before the IAEA actually goes on site, and for that reason, the JCPOA sets an outer limit for those discussions. Even in the circumstance that it took up to 24 days for IAEA access to a suspicious location in the event of a dispute, radioactive evidence would almost certainly still be present in many of the core facilities Iran would need for a covert nuclear weapons program. In other words, Iran would not be able to cover its tracks before granting access, and the United States would be watching, so we would know if Iran tried to do so.

Great turnout tonight in Harrisonville to discuss the Iran Nuclear Deal. [….] 5:18 PM – 14 Aug 2015

Yesterday evening Representative Vicky Hartzler (r) held an open town hall at the community center in Harrisonville, Missouri on the Iran nuclear deal. There were approximately seventy individuals in attendance.

Representative Hartzler (r) is opposed to the deal.

Representative Hartzler (r) greeting individuals in attendance before the start of the event.

Representative Vicky Hartzler (r): [….]

….of course I’m a very big supporter of Israel. I believe we’ve been blessed as a nation because we have been a blessing, uh, to Israel. And if we ever stop being a blessing or support of Israel I think it’s gonna hurt our country. just the right thing to do….

….As you probably heard after the deal was announced there was rallies in the streets in Iran and you had people burning American flags as well as Israel flags and chanting, death to America, death to Israel. And President [Hassan] Rouhani even went to the rally and participated in that. At the same time that, uh, the other world leaders are going back, saying, yeah, this is a good deal. So, gives me pause, I know that….

….So, here’s concerns with the agreement and here’s why I do, uh, not support this agreement. And it is because of these things here.

First of all, it falls short of the anytime anywhere inspections. Uh, Secretary [of State John] Kerry and others said at the beginning that we will have these inspections. Any time you want we’ll be able to go in there and check it out. That is not the case. We now know it’ll take up to twenty-four days to be able to get permission, uh, to be able to get into a site that isn’t listed currently on their list of declared sites. So that’s concerning. And, even if they do agree to all of this within the first ten years, uh, they may not have a nuclear bomb capability if, you know, this all is followed exactly to the letter, uh, and there are no secret, uh, plans going on. But at the end of ten years or even eight years they will have all the, uh, capability they need. They’ll have the centrifuges again, they can take out those thirteen thousand centrifuges that are in storage, they can once again, uh, start ’em up. They will have done research that we will have helped them finance and helped them with the technical ability on the more advanced centrifuges so that they can very quickly, uh, bring up to speed and enrich uranium….

[….]

From the White House:

[….]

The Uranium pathways at Natanz and Fordow

Iran would need two key elements to construct a uranium bomb: tens of thousands of centrifuges and enough highly enriched uranium to produce enough material to construct a uranium bomb.

There are currently two uranium enrichment facilities in the country: the Natanz facility and the Fordow facility.

Let’s take a look at Iran’s uranium stockpile first. Currently, Iran has a uranium stockpile to create 8 to ten nuclear bombs.

But thanks to this nuclear deal, Iran must reduce its stockpile of uranium by 98%, and will keep its level of uranium enrichment at 3.67% – significantly below the enrichment level needed to create a bomb.

Iran also needs tens of thousands of centrifuges to create highly enriched uranium for a bomb. Right now, Iran has nearly 20,000 centrifuges between their Natanz and Fordow facilities. But under this deal, Iran must reduce its centrifuges to 6,104 for the next ten years. No enrichment will be allowed at the Fordow facility at all, and the only centrifuges Iran will be allowed to use are their oldest and least efficient models.

[….]

Cass County Democrats held their annual Back to Blue Dinner in Belton on Saturday evening. As is their custom, they had a full slate of candidates and guests speaking to the crowd. A sample:

Jim White, the Democratic Party candidate in the 4th Congressional District.

Jim White (D): …And this is what I’m running on, investing in our citizens. We want to invest in their economic well-being. Fifteen bucks an hour and a union. A living wage for all workers. [applause, cheers] At the poverty level today there is only one household that can work for minimum wage and even reach the poverty level – and that’s a household with a single person and only if they work forty hours a week, fifty-two weeks a year, which, of course, they’re not gonna get to do. Uh, we all know that the path to the middle class has always been led by organized labor….

Patty Johnson, former Democratic Party legislative candidate.

Patty Johnson (D): ….We’re here because we care about the Democratic Party and because we care about Democratic principles. And how many of you here tonight have worked on someone’s campaign, made phone calls, walked door to door, or did parades? So you all believe, too.  And I’m just here to remind you tonight how important your work is and to thank you all so much for all that you’ve done for all of us who’ve run for office and how much we still need for you to do.  Jim [White] is going to need all your help. And I know we have a candidate for Attorney General  here – and he’s going to need your help. So I’m asking you here tonight to remember why you’re here. The reason that you’re a Democratic is because you care about people, because you want everyone to have the same opportunities that we had growing up. You want your children to have an education, you want good jobs for them when they get out of school, and you all, we all want to have a decent retirement… [….] …We need your hard work.  We need you to keep going. And I think that it’s already been referenced that you all realize there’s an election coming up in November of twenty-sixteen. The work for that election starts here tonight. You all have done something toward that because you’ve contributed money for tables and advertising and we appreciate that because that money goes to help us to help our candidates. And here in Cass County, God knows, we need a lot of help. [laughter] And I also want to recognize Janet Burlingame, too. And I want to recognize her for her courage and integrity in running her race for County Clerk and remaining a Democrat and staying true to her principles. For her [applause]…because that’s what makes us different than Republicans, we actually believe in something. We actually work towards those things we believe in.  And I wanted to leave you all with a small visual tonight. We are surrounded by Republican darkness. And we can sit here and curse the darkness or we can light a candle. I choose to light a candle. And I hope you’ll leave here tonight with me and take that light out to the people who are sitting still in the darkness and who need our help and guidance to come back to light and the Democratic principles we believe in.  So, thank you all so much for being here. [applause]….

Senator Scott Sifton,  a Democratic Party candidate for Attorney General in 2016.

Senator Scott Sifton (D): ….And I, I gotta tell you, I know that the previous speaker was asked, uh, to keep her remarks brief. I was thinking of maybe showing you what a Senate filibuster is like, but I, I’m actually saving it for when the “right to work” bill comes to the floor of the Senate. [applause, cheers] There is only one way that bill is gonna come to a vote in the Senate and that’s if the Republicans exercise the nuclear option. I am proud to have been the last Democrat standing against the seventy-two hour waiting period, which was the last time the Republicans exercised the nuclear option. [applause] And there is no way in the world they will get me to sit down voluntarily when “right to work” comes to the floor. I will debate it all night long. [applause]….

Former Senator Wes Shoemyer (D):  ….I don’t think that an insurance company that runs around calling their name Farm Bureau represents nobody in the agriculture world. [applause] [….]

….There are some things that really torque me about, uh, what Republicans have claimed and claimed to be….I recall when I was in Jeff City there was a piece of legislation that came up and, for, drug testing for TANF recipients. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Think about it. Now this was the only folks in the whole State of Missouri that got a check signed by the state treasury or federal treasury that we thought ought to pee in a cup to get their money. Think about it. I mean, I’ve had, the day I pee in my cup to get my farm payment probably it would be a good time we could do it for the folks on TANF, wouldn’t it?  When Clark [inaudible] wants to pee in a cup for his forty million on his stadium [inaudible} I’ll pee in a cup, too. [applause, cheers]….

Former Senator Wes Shoemyer (D).

4th Congressional District, Jim White, missouri, Vicky Hartzler

Pleasant Hill, Missouri resident Jim White has filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission and announced that he is running as a Democrat in the 2016 4th Congressional District race.

Jim White (D) is running in the 4th Congressional District in 2016.

Yes, I am running for U S Congress for the 4th district in Missouri. I have filed my candidacy and committee with the FEC. Rowena and I have had several conversations with the FEC already and they are very helpful.

I want to be a representative for all the people of the 4th district. Right now Congress has about a 15% approval rating, so the question is why re-hire them. I think it is time for a change.

I will vigorously work for the district and all of its citizens. I recently heard a member of the Senate on the radio claim to be “fighting” for her state and constituents. I don’t think the use of the term fighting is that productive, what we need is less fighting and more work. I would work with Republicans, Independents as well as my fellow Democrats, but I don’t think we should fight, so far that hasn’t proven to be productive.

I have been traveling in the 4th district and will continue to do so until November 2016, and then with your help travel to Washington.

55th Legislative District, Jim White, missouri

On Tuesday evening we had the opportunity to speak briefly with Jim White (D), the Democratic Party candidate in the 55th Legislative District:

Video by Jerry Schmidt.

Show Me Progress: I’m Michael Bersin with Show Me Progress and I’m speaking with Jim White who is a candidate, a Democratic candidate in the 55th Legislative District.

What brought you to running for office?

Jim White (D): Well, like everybody else I’m really getting tired of hearing, uh, the Missouri legislature being a, uh, tag line on Stephen Colbert or someplace else. We’ve had a long time where not much has gotten done. People seem unable to work with other people. I’m not a politician, this is the first time running for office, and I would like to be a part of trying to get things done for the citizens of this district and the state, uh, any way I can.

Show Me Progress: As you talk to voters in this district what are you hearing from them?

Jim White (D): I think that the concerns that they have are the concerns that people have all over. They’re concerned about the economy, of course, about their jobs, about women’s rights, about voting rights, uh, and about nothing getting done in Jefferson City to deal with those, and particularly, also education. We need to really put the emphasis in this state on education.

Show Me Progress: So, you’re hearing a lot of frustration on their part about what’s going on in Jefferson City.

Jim White (D): Uh, what’s not going on in Jefferson City is the frustrating part. Uh, the things that get dealt with aren’t things that are important to anybody, it’s the don’t say gay and that sort of business which is nonsensical.

Show Me Progress: Well, thank you very much for your time.

Jim White (D): You’re welcome. Thank you, Michael.
