Ashley Beard-Fosnow (D) in the 55th Legislative District: grassroots campaign

Ashley Beard-Fosnow (D) is the Democratic Party candidate challenging incumbent Rick Brattin (r) in the 55th Legisltive District.

Grassroots campaigns aren’t so much about flooding the district with costly mailers and ads, but they are about speaking with and connecting with voters.

An unresponsive incumbent with a single large dollar donor can be vulnerable to a grassroots campaign. A challenger knocking on 9,000 doors (to date) in the district and attending one event after another has a good start toward unseating an incumbent.

Yesterday we attended a meet and greet event for Ashley Beard-Fosnow (D) held at the home of a supporter in Raymore.

Ms. Beard-Fosnow greeted everyone as they entered, spoke with small groups of individuals, briefly addressed those in attendance about her background and goals in her campaign, and then spent a considerable amount of time taking questions and listening.

The conversation included education and schools, infrastructure needs – not “kicking the can” of pressing road and bridge maintenance down the road, and economic development.

Events like these, with substantive interaction with a candidate, is one of many ways that candidate can engage others to speak on their behalf to their friends and neighbors in the district.

That’s a much more Democratic way to reach voters than a single $50,000.00 check from a wealthy individual who doesn’t live in the district.

This is what happens when credible and hard working Democratic Party candidates run for office.

That could be an interesting conversation – “He fears me more than he likes you.”

Today at the Missouri Ethics Commission for incumbent Rick Brattin’s (r) campaign in the 55th Legislative District:

C101084 08/27/2016 FRIENDS OF RICK BRATTIN David Humphreys PO Box 4050 Joplin MO 64803 Tamko Building Products Executive 8/27/2016 $50,000.00

[emphasis added]

Doesn’t live in the district, can’t vote for the candidate.

Again, why would a very wealthy republican from Joplin care enough to drop $50,000.00 on the race in a “safe” legislative district in west central Missouri. Unless, of course, someone was worried about having enough votes for “right to get paid less” in the future.

That’s a hell of a lot of money from one person for a legislative district race. Does the incumbent republican really need the help?:

That inspires confidence. Not. Yep, someone needed some serious propping up.

From her campaign web site:

…I am running for state representative to offer you a better choice. As a wife, mom, and community volunteer, I will work outside the usual political nonsense and scandals we see in Jefferson City. Instead, I will focus on the issues that matter: education, transportation, protecting local control, and ethics reforms. I will use my professional skill set to evaluate programs to ensure efficiency and accountability. I will be involved in our local community and advocate on your behalf…

The seat is currently held by Rick Brattin (r). Yes, that Rick Brattin.

55th Legislative District, Jim White, missouri

On Tuesday evening we had the opportunity to speak briefly with Jim White (D), the Democratic Party candidate in the 55th Legislative District:

Video by Jerry Schmidt.

Show Me Progress: I’m Michael Bersin with Show Me Progress and I’m speaking with Jim White who is a candidate, a Democratic candidate in the 55th Legislative District.

What brought you to running for office?

Jim White (D): Well, like everybody else I’m really getting tired of hearing, uh, the Missouri legislature being a, uh, tag line on Stephen Colbert or someplace else. We’ve had a long time where not much has gotten done. People seem unable to work with other people. I’m not a politician, this is the first time running for office, and I would like to be a part of trying to get things done for the citizens of this district and the state, uh, any way I can.

Show Me Progress: As you talk to voters in this district what are you hearing from them?

Jim White (D): I think that the concerns that they have are the concerns that people have all over. They’re concerned about the economy, of course, about their jobs, about women’s rights, about voting rights, uh, and about nothing getting done in Jefferson City to deal with those, and particularly, also education. We need to really put the emphasis in this state on education.

Show Me Progress: So, you’re hearing a lot of frustration on their part about what’s going on in Jefferson City.

Jim White (D): Uh, what’s not going on in Jefferson City is the frustrating part. Uh, the things that get dealt with aren’t things that are important to anybody, it’s the don’t say gay and that sort of business which is nonsensical.

Show Me Progress: Well, thank you very much for your time.

Jim White (D): You’re welcome. Thank you, Michael.
