Since July 15th has passed we thought we’d take a look at the Federal Election Commission campaign finance report of LG PAC, the political action committee which started running television ads attacking republican gubernatorial candidate John Brunner in June. The LG PAC July quarterly report filed with the FEC covers the period from April 1st to June 30th.

And where did the money come from?:

That’s a lot of “media”.

We looked for Freedom Frontier at the Federal Election Commission and came up with Freedom Frontier Action Network, which interestingly, has a Custodian of Records/Designated Agent with the very same address as Freedom Frontier:

[emphasis added]

Very interesting.

On January 25, 2016 the Federal Election Commission accepted [pdf] the termination of Freedom Frontier Action Network’s involvement with federal elections (and hence, their need to file disclosure reports with the FEC).

We’ve looked for a Freedom Frontier PAC in Missouri, Texas, and Nevada. It could be our poor search skills, but we couldn’t find anything in those systems.

So, as it stands, someone or many people are possibly spending $2,300,000.00 to be really mean to John Brunner (r). And we still don’t know who is behind it.

Between Eric Greitens (r) and John Brunner (r) bashing each other via television ads in constant rotation and Catherine Hanaway’s (r) disjointed “run for the hills” ads, all enriching the broadcasters in Missouri media markets, Peter Kinder could be the last republican candidate remaining after the primary. It’s hot out there today.

John Brunner (r) campaign literature. Interestingly, there's no union bug.

John Brunner (r) campaign literature. Interestingly, there’s no union bug.

This afternoon our doorbell rang. I opened the door and there stood a pleasant young man wearing a John Brunner (r) campaign t-shirt. He introduced himself and then asked if he could ask me a few questions, consulting the tablet he held in his hand. I told him, “Sure.” He asked me if I would be voting in the republican primary. I answered, “No.” My response seemed to take him aback. He went on, “Okay, could I ask you what is the most important issue we’re facing in Missouri?” “Yeah, Medicaid expansion.” He smiled. We engaged in conversation for a minute or so, me asking him about the process of canvassing and also asking him if he had enough water. I mentioned that I had been seeing a lot of campaign television ads and that the clutter made them ineffective. At one point he told me they were encountering a lot of Democrats. I remarked that this is the first time I’d encountered an organized canvass in my neighborhood from a statewide republican candidate. I reminded him to keep drink watering. He handed me a campaign brochure, shook my hand, and then went on his way.

It was a little better day at the Missouri Ethics Commission for John Brunner’s (r) 2016 gubernatorial campaign:

C151077 06/06/2016 MISSOURIANS FOR JOHN BRUNNER Eugene Toombs 305 Babler Rd St Louis MO 63141 Retired Retired 6/6/2016 $5,001.00

That additional dollar. Heh. It’s sure better than being the subject of a bunch of attack ads paid for by a brand new PAC.

Update:

There was another.

This morning we saw one of the anti John Brunner (r) ads paid for by LG PAC running in the Kansas City television market. John Brunner is one of four 2016 republican gubernatorial candidates. This ad buy [pdf] is a fair description of the content of the ad:

BrunnerKCWEad

Anti John Brunner message revolving around tax history of Brunner including not paying his taxes on time which resulted in multiple liens. And also states that Brunner set up overseas accounts to avoid Missouri taxes and refuses to show his tax returns

Yep, that was pretty much the ad.

It’ll be interesting to find out who bankrolled the ad(s). Meanwhile, pass the popcorn.

Apparently there are attack ads already running in the republican gubernatorial primary. I’m shocked I tell you, shocked.

John Brunner’s (r) gubernatorial campaign released the following statement today:

News from the Trail
Statement on “LG PAC” Commercial
June 04, 2016

“It’s no surprise that John Brunner is being targeted by special interests with flat-out lies. John is the only candidate who can’t be bought and who is not looking to start, extend or jump-start a political career. The special interests have good reason to fear John Brunner as Missouri’s next governor, because John will stand up for ‘We the people’ to take our government back from the special interests, and get Missouri back on the right track.”

-Campaign spokesman Mike Hafner
