Last week, Senator Claire McCaskill (D):

…I think some of my Republican colleagues are hiding and don’t want to come out and do town halls. Especially the members of Congress…

… Have any of them [Vicky Hartzler (r), Anne Wagner (r)] done town halls that you know of? I don’t think any of them have done a town hall. You know, if you can’t do a town hall I’m not sure why you would run. I think you’re supposed to be serving the public. I’m pretty sure, so…

Yesterday, via Twitter:

B Yates‏ @OldDrum
Great. Where can we find your schedule for townhall meetings with your regular constituents?

Nah. Roy Blunt (r) is probably too busy in smaller meetings with his constituents on K Street.

A familiar face tracking Senator Claire McCaskill (D) at her public town hall in Parkville this afternoon:

I track, therefore I am.

You’d think those wealthy right wingnut benefactors would invest in higher quality equipment for their minions. You’d think. Maybe blurred video and high noise audio is part of the cachet.

Unlike most others, Senator Claire McCaskill (D) ain’t afraid of her constituents.

From Senator McCaskill’s office:

McCaskill to Host Public Town Halls Across Missouri
Public town halls have been a hallmark for McCaskill—this month, Senator will hold 8 public forums, open to the press, in communities across the state
Thursday, April 6, 2017
MISSOURI – Senator Claire McCaskill—who has hosted public town hall meetings in Missouri throughout her time in the U.S. Senate—will hold more public town halls across the state this month.
“I think it’s important that I hold myself accountable to Missourians—and having public town halls, where any Missourian can show up and chew on me about what they think I’m doing right or wrong, and share their ideas and concerns, is a great way to do it,” said McCaskill, who grew up in rural Missouri. “Town halls like these are part of what makes our democracy great, and I think every elected official would benefit from listening and learning from Missourians, face-to-face.”
McCaskill’s eight public town halls this month will take place in counties across the state. Additional details will be announced in advance.
Public town halls with Missourians have been a hallmark of McCaskill’s time in the Senate, including tours across the state. During debate over the Affordable Care Act—at a time of heightened demonstrations against the law—McCaskill held a series of highly publicized town halls, including in traditionally conservative areas of Missouri, to hear directly from Missourians about their concerns and respond to criticisms. In 2014, McCaskill logged more than 1,000 miles around the state on her “McCaskill on Main Street” series of public town halls.

Count ’em, eight.

Some of the social media responses from right wingnuts remind me of 2009. This time Claire McCaskill’s (D) supporters won’t be so polite.

Ann Wagner’s tele-townhall. Pt. 1: Who made the cut? Why? How?

Ann Wagner, Tele-Town hall, town halls

Rep. Ann Wagner is showing signs that constituent pressure might be getting to her. Many of us who’ve been writing and calling her, asking that she meet with us and take a little time to hear our concerns and take our questions, learned via her email newsletter that she held a “tele-townhall,” a tried and true dodge to avoid risking a little in person give-and-take. And she clearly thinks that that’s done the trick. Here she is patting herself on the back in a recent email newsletter:

With so much happening in Washington under President Trump’s new administration and our Republican-led Congress, it is important that I continue to hear what is on your mind at home. I am thrilled that more than 9,000 of you joined us for a tele-townhall conversation Thursday night, where we discussed issues ranging from healthcare to pro-life legislation.

Just to give you a little perspective, over 400,000 folks voted in the last 2nd district election but nobody I’ve heard from seems to be very clear about how the 9,000 folks who “thrilled” Annie by “joining” her on the call were selected for the honor from among that 400,000.

I’ve personally called Wagner’s office several times to ask that she hold a public town-hall – she’s right that there’s lots going on that will affect people in the 2nd district in very serious ways and we want her – hell, we need her – to hear and respond to our concerns. The response? I was told that I could sign up for her newsletter if I wanted to know what was going on chez Rep.Wagner – never mind that, as I told her “tele-staffer,” I’ve been signed up to receive them for a long, long time and Annie’s coy little newsletter driblets don’t really do the trick. Nobody mentioned a tele-townhall to me as a possibility. Which makes sense given that the latest event – which is the only one I’ve personally ever heard about, thanks to some generous Facebook info sharing – seems to have been a surprise for even the participants.

Nor are many of us, including, by all accounts, Wagner’s staff, sure about what it takes to get in on these surprise parties, at least according to some 2nd district residents who’ve been calling and asking how to be included. One person said that she called, left contact information, and asked to participate in the next tele-townhall, and, though the actual telephone event Wagner boasts about above was held later that day, the staffer taking her information said nothing at all about it. Nor was she called. Wonder why?

I have read a report from one person who participated in that call and have heard that another just missed the surprise call inviting her to join the event. But the fact that some folks had the opportunity to listen to Rep. Wagner does not mitigate the problem. If these events are meant to substitute for actual town-halls, why can’t constituents sign up for them? Why wait to be selected? An even more basic question is why aren’t constituents being notified ahead of time that one of these events is imminent so they can do whatever is necessary to participate? Why can’t anyone tell us what it takes to be included?

Wagner has email addresses for all of us who subscribe to her newsletter – which itself indicates interest in what she has to say. It would be easy to let us all know in advance and invite our participation when she’s planning to tele-gift  us with her insights into the Trump world she seems to be embracing so wholeheartedly. It would actually be relatively trivial to set up a web-page form we could use to register for the teleconferences. Other folks do such things. I really bet that if Wagner actually cared about communicating with constituents, she could implement some process that would let us decide if we want to participate, rather than leaving us to wait breathlessly to be tapped whenever she feels like getting us – or some of us – on the line.

You don’t think she’s cherry-picking participants , do you?

The news has been full of reports about how “ugly” some Republican town halls have been over the past few weeks, prompting, comparisons to the boisterous town halls that Democrats endured during the nascent Tea Party years. There’s a big difference though, at least for Missourians. I well remember how valiantly, resolutely, and, yes, respectfully, Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill handled the worked-up Tea Partiers – and some of them were, to put it mildly, really ugly.

Questions of how to conduct tele-townhalls aside, though, isn’t the real issue still that Rep. Wagner needs to take similar, face-to-face responsibility for what she is doing in Congress if she wants our respect – and our votes? Isn’t answering our questions – especially the ones that have got us hot and bothered – her job? If Wagner’s really a “representative” shouldn’t she do some representing? And if she isn’t going to represent all of us, at least by listening and responding to us, maybe she should retire. Or be retired.

Rep. Vicky Hartzler‏ @RepHartzler
Obamacare has failed Americans. We must do better. I’m looking forward to making healthcare more affordable for ALL Americans. #BetterWay
10:03 AM – 2 Mar 2017

Much hilarity ensued. Some of the responses:

@RepHartzler why don’t you start with meeting your constituents? They have concerns.

I appreciate how @RepHartzler talks about ALL Americans, when she really means “ALL the wealthy Americans impacted by its taxes”

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP If you reall’y want to make healthcare affordable for all Americans you’d pass single payer healthcare #PartyOfDeath

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP there are a lot of people who would not be alive today if it were not for Obamacare. You’re wrong #PartyOfDeath

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP Congressional Rs have failed Americans. And have reveled in doing so.

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP Obamacare was undermined at every turn by the #PartyOfDeath the #GOP Killing Obamacare kills American citizens

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP When are you going to make yours public so we can make fun of it?

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP give us your health care plan!

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP the only thing failing the American people are the Republicans. Get it together. #investigaterussia #impeachtrump

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP Let me know when you have figured it out. So far the Rep’s have nothing. Fix and repair.

All they got was potentially life saving coverage they’d been previously denied, what a failure! Only millions got insured! @RepHartzler

@RepHartzler no it hasn’t. Maybe if u attended a town hall mtg you’d know better! My wife & I are both insured ONLY bc of #ACA

@RepHartzler Keep the Affordable Care Act.

@RepHartzler Obamacare has SAVED many American LIVES and helped many receive adequate medical care. IMPROVE, don’t DESTROY.

@RepHartzler HOW????

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP Awesome! Now can we get a few details about the new plan? PLEASE

@RepHartzler you have failed me. I voted for you. Bet i won’t repeat that mistake. We will remember you did NOTHING about #TrumpRussia

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP and Republicans are failing US!

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP the pain you all cause sick people nationwide daily is enormous #PartyOfDeath is this really who you want to be?

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP Obamacare has saved millions of Americans. Get back to work.

@RepHartzler Actually you and Republicans have failed to fix Obamacare to make it work. #TherewasaBetterWay

@RepHartzler you refuse to recognize the portions of the Affordable Care Act that are working because you’re playing partisan games

@RepHartzler please stop with the partial truths. There are portions of the ACA that are working well. why do you refuse to recognize that?

@RepHartzler Lying under oath also fails Americans – are you concerned about that? Or is it your typical #partybeforecountry?

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP My daughter will likely go to an early grave if the #PartyOfDeath repeals Obamacare.

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP Except if you have pre existing condition or older and don’t have a lot of money.

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP yeah, work on indictment against @jeffsessions, we must enforce existing laws #Sessions #indictsessions #Trumprussia

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Actually #Obamacare saved my life : spreading Lies Vicky : We’ll hold you to word, cheaper would be free

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP didn’t fail my son who has a brain tumor, didn’t fail my mother who suffers from HEP C and had pre existing condition

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP Obamacare is not 100% failed..Obamacare give a health insurance care for American,Obamacare is good..Don’t repeal it.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Has it? It’s worked well for a member of my family. Perhaps you both should listen to ur constituents.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan True but i can’t get enough of this Affordable Care Act, its working great.

Ah, sarcasm. I think.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan it worked for me. stop lying

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan How in the hf has it failed Americans? You know what’s failed Americans? The goddam GOP.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan keep talking healthcare while your POTUS admin implodes. This #russiagate is taking your legislative time away

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Ahhh…Lyin Ryan has a new shill working for him…Don’t believe him, don’t believe you. Mid class gets hurt again

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Same stale comments from R’s without any hint of an actual solution or plan. You’ve had years and have nothing!

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan – and your plan? Yeah…crickets. Sad!

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan you guys have no idea what you’re doing. Your ship is sinking. Speak out against #russiagate #FireSessions do it

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Both of you have failed the wkg class. Yet you are yanking healthcare from the less fortunate for personal gain.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan @HouseGOP @GOP
All talk, for 7 years, and have no plan & now understand that it’s complicated. Y’all are incapable

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Aren’t you ashamed to be repeating a LIE? Oh, wait lying is a major Republican tool, they lie about EVERYTHING!

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Well so far every plan you guys have floated will cause the deaths of thousands. #BloodOnYourHands #KeepTrying

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan well you had seven years to come up with it so let’s see it. That’s right, nothing!! you have nothing!!#LIAR

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan #ACA saved my life. Got free check-up, boom, cancer found. Had not been able to get insurance for 5 yrs prior.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan What you really mean is tax cuts for the rich can’t be done unless you remove the ACA subsidy…which will force millions to lose healthcare

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan a secret way that no one can read yet?

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan 7 years. Times up!! Let’s see your great plan that doesn’t leave millions without health insurance. Waiting……

@RepHartzler @GOP has had years and years to come up with something. All they did was vote over 60 times to repeal ACA-unsuccessfully.

@RepHartzler @HouseGOP ALL Americans, except for women. They’re just pre-existing conditions. Or ‘hosts’.

@RepHartzler You have an AG who just lied under oath and you’re doing jack. *YOU* have failed Americans. Can we repeal you? Greedy, no-good hack. #GTFO

@RepHartzler YOUR PARTY IS FAILING AMERICANS. It’s an embarrassment and a complete perversion of American decency. #goodbye

@RepHartzler Saying it over and over doesn’t make it true. Everyone I know has been helped by Obamacare. Stop forcing it to fail.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan Your plan must be crap or you wouldn’t be hiding it from the American people!

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan in all seriousness please tell me how the ACA has failed Americans. Especially those with pre-existing condition

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan It’s worked pretty well for me.

@RepHartzler @SpeakerRyan I’m looking forward to the day Repub actually do something for average Americans, whats ur plan genius?

An optimist.

We want every American to have access to affordable, quality health insurance that meets their needs. [….]
9:05 AM – 24 Feb 2017

The Faux News Channel? Really, republicans are still beating that dead horse?

A significant (and representative) chunk of the responses:

@RepHartzler 3 generations making America great. Marchers we’re not a “pornographic fringe.” You’re embarrassing.

@RepHartzler I have a question about the “pornographic signs” at Women’s March & other demonstrations. Were they more offensive than this? [Donald Trump audio quote]

@RepHartzler “Having access to” doesn’t mean “having” #healthcare – nice buzzwords, though.#GOPFail #SaveACA #DoYourJob #Resistance

@RepHartzler and you claim this with a giant Fox News logo? Seriously? How about finding out what your Constituents really want?

@RepHartzler do your job! Represent the people not special interests! Investigate AND impeach the Putin puppet. or are you in on coverup?

@RepHartzler You care so much about healthcare that you didn’t show up at the Healthcare #Townhall constituents invited you to. #WheresVicky

@RepHartzler Why don’t you actually talk to your constituents about health care instead of calling us names?

@RepHartzler Why not fix the problems with the system and move on? #affordablecareact #norepeal

@RepHartzler the radical fringe is Bannon-45 & you!

@RepHartzler as soon as you mention Fox News , you are disqualified from having any credibility. ps. DO YOUR JOB HOLD TOWNHALL MEETINGS!

@RepHartzler Are you with your people at CPAC today and waving your Russian Trump flag?

@RepHartzler so glad to hear you will protect Americans’ rights to affordable health care and keep the ACA in place! Thank you.

That may have been sarcasm. These days it can be difficult to tell the difference.

@RepHartzler Then repair ACA and leave it alone.

@RepHartzler “What’s not been reported” is your delusion. @womensmarch signs varied. Some cheeky, some provocative, ALL you should read.

@RepHartzler instead of doing a town hall and facing your constituents you write an opinion piece? Horrendous. More to follow.

@RepHartzler Key word being access. Still trying to reach your office with my concerns but your mail full now for 3 days. Do your job!

Yeah, funny that.

@RepHartzler called ur office EVERY DAY 4 2 weeks no answer on why no town hall & now banned press…I vow to see u OUT OF OFFICE

@RepHartzler IF that were true you would demand a better plan than Better Way which only benefits insurance companies & others.

We can’t wait for the next open public town hall in the district. If something like that will ever happen again.

U.S. representative says town halls would not be a good use of time

Meeting with constituents opposed to Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act would not be a good use of time, U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler said Wednesday.

[….]

“I want to hear their ideas but town hall forums have not been a good forum to get that accomplished, to have a productive dialogue,” Hartzler said. “So I invite their ideas, they can call my office, they can write, they can email me and I will listen.”

[….]

Hartzler has not scheduled any events to meet with the general public during the recess. Two members of Hartzler’s staff spent more than two hours answering constituent questions Friday in Ashland.

“You know, it wasn’t the most pleasant experience for them and I think there’s better ways to communicate,” Hartzler said.

[….]

In response to Hartzler criticizing how her staff was treated, Wiggs said she attended the Ashland session and disagreed with Hartzler’s description.

“That’s not true,” she said. “We were very fair minded and very upfront.”

Hartzler is trying to divert attention by saying a town hall meeting would not be productive, Wiggs said.

“I don’t buy into that,” she said. “I think she’s just a big chicken.”

That would pretty much describe most republicans in Congress right now.

This is now, that was then:

In August 2009 we covered a number of Senator Claire McCaskill’s (D) health care town halls in Missouri. The most dissonant ones were in Hillsboro and Jefferson City.

Across the country right wingnut astroturf organizations like Americans for Prosperity promoted their opposition to the health care bill.

“…No, I mean I’m hearing many of the same questions. I mean there’s a lot of misinformation out there about, you know, what’s in the bill, what isn’t in the bill. A lot of distrust about government being further involved in people’s  health care. So, no, there wasn’t anything that I heard today at this particular forum that, there, there’s some common themes that are coming up. There are people that are frustrated that want, feel like that Barrack Obama won the election and the Democrats control Congress. Get it done already. And then there’s other people who feel very strongly that Congress needs to back away and do absolutely nothing. And everything in between…”

And then all of a sudden, you know, because it was raucous and conflict and the last time I looked you guys liked that stuff, it got a lot of coverage because it was good visuals and it was different and it was big crowds. So all of a sudden everybody sittin’ at home who wanted health care reform go wait a minute, we, we want health care reform. And I think they’ve woken up now. I think they’re showing up. I think they’re getting more engaged. And I think it, it, I will be surprised if we don’t continue to see, I think there’ll be town halls that’ll be pretty rough, depending on where we are. But, it was interesting to me here in Warrensburg, I wasn’t shocked in Kansas City where you have a, it’s generally a more Democratic area of the state. Gee, Steven Walsh, who else is in that picture. Kind of ironic, don’t you think?

“…You know, they, there were clearly a lot of people here that were more interested in disrupting and showing their anger than listening or having any kind of discourse. But that’s okay. You know, this is, we have this great big giant healthy First Amendment in this country. I just, I feel for the people who come that want to listen. They can’t when people start screaming out and, it is bad manners. And by the way, I don’t think it’s particularly persuasive. I don’t think, being the loudest doesn’t make you right. And it generally doesn’t work very well in terms of convincing other people. So, but they have a right to do it, and I respect their right to do it, and, you know, there were moments of very, did you notice, there were times it was very quiet? I got the sense that maybe people actually were learning some things they didn’t know and even if there are just a couple of those it certainly makes it worth it…”

Representative Vicky Hartzler (r) held a series of town halls today in the 4th Congressional District. We attended the afternoon town halls in Clinton and Warrensburg. There were approximately eighty-five to ninety people attending in Clinton and near one hundred in Warrensburg. There were dissenting views and push back at both town halls, but the one in Warrensburg was by far the more raucous.
