The vote today in the U.S. Senate on the republican poison pill bill (cloture), negotiated among republicans, which would appropriate money for Donald Trump’s (r) wall in exchange for temporary immigration policy changes (on DACA and Temporary Protective Status, hence the “poison pill”) and temporarily punting the partial government shutdown:

Question: On the Cloture Motion (Motion Invoke Cloture on the Shelby Amdt. No. 5)
Vote Number: 9
Vote Date: January 24, 2019, 02:42 PM

Required For Majority: 3/5
Vote Result: Cloture Motion Rejected

Amendment Number: S.Amdt. 5 to H.R. 268 (Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2019)
Statement of Purpose: Of a perfecting nature.
Vote Counts:
YEAs 50
NAYs 47
Not Voting 3

Missouri: Blunt (R-MO), Yea Hawley (R-MO), Yea

Joe Manchin of West Virginia was the only Democrat to vote for this bill (cloture). Two republicans voted against it (Cotton of Arkansas and Lee of Utah). Two republicans didn’t vote (Paul of Kentucky and Risch of Idaho). 60 votes were needed for cloture, to advance the bill.

Is anyone surprised?

The “clean” version of the bill, which the previous republican controlled Senate approved before the Trump shutdown was also brought up for a vote. It, too, failed get the 60 votes for cloture, to advance the bill:

Question: On the Cloture Motion (Motion to Invoke Cloture on the Schumer Amdt. No. 6 )
Vote Number: 10
Vote Date: January 24, 2019, 03:18 PM

Required For Majority: 3/5
Vote Result: Cloture Motion Rejected

Amendment Number: S.Amdt. 6 to H.R. 268 (Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2019)
Statement of Purpose: Of a perfecting nature.
Vote Counts:
YEAs 52
NAYs 44
Not Voting 4

Missouri: Blunt (R-MO), Nay Hawley (R-MO), Nay

Two of a kind. Is anyone surprised?

Six republicans voted for the bill (Alexander of Tennessee – retiring in 2020, Collins of Maine – seeking reelection in 2020, Gardner of Colorado – seeking reelection in 2020, Isakson of Georgia, Murkowski of Alaska, Romney of Utah). No Democrats voted against the bill. Three republicans did not vote (Burr of North Carolina, Paul of Kentucky, Risch of Idaho).

The #TrumpShutdown continues.

Sunrise.

Well, that was quick:

So interesting that bad lawyer Michael Cohen, who sadly will not be testifying before Congress, is using the lawyer of Crooked Hillary Clinton to represent him – Gee, how did that happen? Remember July 4th weekend when Crooked went before FBI & wasn’t sworn in, no tape, nothing?

JOINT RESOLUTION

Submitting to the qualified voters of Missouri an amendment repealing Section 2 of Article I of the Constitution of Missouri, and adopting one new section in lieu thereof relating to affirming life.

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring therein:

Section A. Section 2, Article I, Constitution of Missouri, is repealed and one new section adopted in lieu thereof, to be known as Section 2, to read as follows:
Section 2. That all constitutional government is intended to promote the general welfare of the people; that all persons have a natural right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and the enjoyment of the gains of their own industry; that all persons are created equal and are entitled to equal rights and opportunity under the law; that to give security to these things is the principal office of government, and that when government does not confer this security, it fails in its chief design.

Section B. Under section 116.155 and other applicable constitutional provisions and laws of this state authorizing the general assembly to adopt ballot language for the submission of a joint resolution to the voters of this state, the official ballot title of the amendment proposed in section A shall be as follows:
“Should the Missouri Constitution be amended to protect pregnant women and children in the womb by recognizing that a child in the womb of a woman is a person with a right to life which cannot be deprived by state or private action without due process and equal protection of law?”.
Section C. Under section 116.155 and other applicable constitutional provisions and laws of this state authorizing the general assembly to adopt a fiscal note summary for the submission of a joint resolution to the voters of this state, the official fiscal note summary of the amendment proposed by section A shall be as follows:
“This change is expected to have no fiscal impact.”

Yep, it’s only about forced birth.

Still a true believer.

Representative Vicky Hartzler (r) [2018 file photo].

This morning, via Twitter:

Rep. Vicky Hartzler @RepHartzler
It’s a shame @SpeakerPelosi is refusing to consider compromise from @POTUS to reopen govn + ensure Americans’ safety + give DREAMERS more certainty. Missed paychecks are devastating to our 800,000 dedicated federal wrkrs, many of whom make less than $50K/year. #compromise
10:38 AM – 23 Jan 2019 from Washington, DC

And we quote: “…The American people gave us the Majority…” The American people gaveth and the American people tooketh away in case you hadn’t noticed.

Much hilarity ensued. Some of the responses:

It’s even more of a shame Republicans don’t vote for a CR they already voted for. Why didn’t solve this “crisis” in 2017 or 2018?

And if you are so worried about low income people, why do you keep on trying to take their health care and food stamps away from them.

Who knew not being a hypocrite would be so hard for some people?

It’s a shame that @senatemajldr would not bring up bills passed by the house for a vote that would of reopened the Government and put those 800, 000 workers back to work with pay. #Trumpshutdown #McConnellshutdown

It’s a shane trump is holding the American people hostage in order to demand what he wants.

A proposal drafted only by Republicans is not a compromise.

If it were a compromise the hostages would not be necessary. Open the gov now, talk wall later, otherwise compromise is just another lie.

Its a shame that you are so behind on the news that Pelosi has sent multiple bills to the Senate to reopen the government. Why hasn’t McConnell allowed any of them to go to a vote?

It is a shame, isn’t it? Who wouldn’t take a deal in which POTUS offers a lesser, stripped down version of something he himself stole to get taxpayers to pay for a massive construction plan with no plans and that he promised somebody else would pay for?

Also it’s your party shutdown and your fault 800,000 have missed paychecks. It is cruel to not open the government and pay the workers. Dems have passed legislation to open the government. What’s your logic to not open the government. Then negotiate.

A three-year deferment for DACA/TPS is hardly “more certainty.”

It’s a shame that you’re holding the government hostage over made up crisis yet continue to blame Dems despite your party controlling the entire gov the last couple years. This is on you guys.

This is the only time you’ve cared about DREAMERS

Where are the Peso’s?

this whole administration is a shame on America. you have the bills, tell @senatemajldr to stop obstructing

Trump said Mexico was paying for the wall. You and the gullible Trumpsters believed him. The republicans held all 3 branches of government until 3 weeks ago. Americans are suffering because the GOP can’t govern. Should Pelosi work a Deal with Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter? SMFH

OMG what a stupid incorrect tweet. POTUS compromise isn’t one.He is giving back part of what he stole from the Dreamers. Would Hartzler Farms agree to a compromise if a valuable tractor was taken by a thief and offered you a compromise of returning it for 10,000 bushels of beans

Why didn’t YOU fix all this in the last two years with Republican majorities and a “Republican” “President”? Makes your party look ineffective, as usual.

It’s a shame @realDonaldTrump threw a temper tantrum, and walked out of a negotiations meeting. Where is the great deal maker? #Trumpshutdown #McConnellshutdown

Oh, Vickster, how quickly you forget (ignore?) ….

And you are who?

A backbencher in the minority party in the House.

It’s a shame that you are working against people’s will, Trump shutdown the government and he is responsible for the mess, majority of the American people don’t support wall. Stop sucking on Trump’s little mushroom.
Look at the facts, your #VanityWall is stupid idea.

Trump and Republicans owns the shutdown, stop kissing moron’s little mushroom and do your job. #GOPShutdown

Why didn’t you deal with this when you had the congressional majority?

Because you wanted a shutdown.

Rehashed bs and you know it. Still complicit with traitor in chief. How many rubles are in Your wallet?

It’s a shame that your party couldn’t accomplish anything while you controlled the house senate and White House. Now you want to blame dems. Quit feeding us bullshit Vick. You’re holding your constituents who are federal employees hostage. Are you going to pay their bills?

Way to work with others Vickster.

Congrats, Vickster … you have been elected to the Political Hall of Idiots … how’s it feel being in the minority party now? It’s the first time I’ve heard you use the word #compromise

Hey Vickster … I missed your vote on this one. Care to tell us how you voted?

Oh my fucking God … you haven’t read or understand Trump’s “compromise”, have you? It’s smoke and mirrors and offers nothing in reality. You’re hopeless, Vickster

Trump could end this shutdown in a minute. Address your concerns to him.
#TrumpShutdown

That is NO compromise and you know it. He proposed measures previously turned down. He WANTS to keep govt shut down to dismantle FBI. Shame on you.

May I remind you the reason dreamers have uncertainty is because your beloved fuhrer blew it up!

Not too many are buying what Representative Vicky Hartzler (r) is trying to sell.

Just words, eh?

Josh Hawley (r) [2016 file photo].

Yesterday morning, via Twitter:

Josh Hawley @HawleyMO
MLK understood the importance & dignity of work, something our policy “experts” have forgotten. He famously said: “No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance…”
9:56 AM – 21 Jan 2019

Uh, what “policy experts”? This Tweet reads like it came from a right wingnut Tweet-o-matic blandifier bot. Gee, let’s combine a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quote with some meaningless right wingnut talking point.

The responses on Twitter are less charitable:

Are you seriously trying to use Dr. King’s legacy to attack the very people he was fighting for? There is no dignity in working full time or more and still living in poverty. There is no dignity in losing everything you’ve worked for to pay for medical treatment.

There is no dignity in taking children away from their parents and putting them in cages. There is no dignity in failing to uphold the minimum standards of your job by making sure the government is open to serve the people.

There is no dignity in lying to the American people by fabricating a crisis. There is no dignity in scapegoating those who have the least to provide cover for those who have the most. There is no dignity in forcing people to work for no pay as leverage.

In short Senator, there is no dignity in you, your party or your president and until you summon some, the words of Dr. King will be beyond and above you.

You’re taking that quote entirely out context, in that King was making a case for a liveable wage and benefits for all workers. He was saying workers should be treated with respect and valued by politicians, no matter what their job title be.

If you want to honor MLK in service of this quote, open the government and show government workers that their work has value, deserves respect, and they deserve to be paid for that work. Not held hostage by a corrupt President for a monument to racism. #TrumpShutown

IF you believe that, why won’t you raise the minimum wage?!

I think you’re lying, as usual.

Just like he lied about “protecting” preexisting conditions in health insurance coverage (while joining a lawsuit to strip it away).

So, you will be working to raise the minimum wage and strengthen unions, then?

Hi, @HawleyMO – Q from #MO constituent:
Which policy experts are ‘anti-work’?
I assume you aren’t referring to policy types who endorse communal support for young children, elderly, chronically disabled that are unable to work…correct? Curious about specific reference.

Could you explain this? Who are the experts you are talking about, and how do they diminish a work mentality?

Why does everything you say have to be some grievance-filled swipe at a straw man? Newsflash: you are literally the embodiment of the elite that you constantly whine about.

Speaking of all work having dignity, weren’t you against Prop B to raise Missouri’s minimum wage?

Typical conservative fatuity: Using MLK Day to plug the GOP’s hateful maker-taker philosophy.

What the hell? You are referencing what MLK understood, and you and #GOP and @POTUS are keeping 800,000 federal employees from getting paid because of YOUR #govermentshutdown #TrumpShutdown. You, sir, have no understanding of what #MLK fought for.

Would MLK think your anti-Labor support of “Right to Work”, your fight against pre-existing condition coverage, your stance against health care for all, your support of an admin that has decreased safety from physical harm and fraud – shows YOU understand the dignity of work?

While on the surface this looks pretty good, it should be noted that you likely woke up, had coffee, turned on Fox News, they said something about MLK day, and it hit you that you should come up with something for “The Twitter”.
And then it took you 4 hours!

Can we assume that you will support raising the minimum wage? (Who these policy “experts” that deny the importance of work?)

Yes. You may understand it, but you, the GOP and your donors don’t practice it. Your constituents do. Like that matters to you.

wow….that is all you have to say about the Dr King…..says volumes about you

Saturday’s Kansas City Women’s March was centered at Unity Temple on the Plaza – the organizers modifying the march and their earlier rally plans due to the extreme cold weather.

Participants gathered in the Unity Temple lobby before the 2:00 p.m. start of the march. Well over five hundred individuals participated in the march.

The march proceeded through the Plaza to Mill Creek Park and back.

“Intersectional feminism or bust”

“Women are the future”

“Sister, you never walk alone”

“Meta”

“Sisters”

“Hear our voice”

“…expect resistance”

“The only body that needs regulating is the legislative one”

The marchers then returned to Unity Temple for a rally. There were close to a thousand individuals in attendance at the rally.

“Trump is wrong about everything”

“…I can do anything”

“…watch me vote”

Kansas City Councilwoman Alissia Canady spoke at the rally:

Kansas City Councilwoman Alissia Canady – January 19, 2019.

https://showmeprogress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/ste-001.mp3

The transcript:

Councilwoman Alissia Canady: Good afternoon everyone. Mayor Sly James is always a tough act to follow. But I will tell you, looking out this crowd of strong, capable, beautiful women and allies of all persuasions who have come to support the continued fight for gender equity, I’m filled with a sense of pride. A hope that hate cannot take away.

We have a sense of duty over these dark days and the instability in the national discourse that we have to overcome. We’ve been witness to historic victories of women at the national level. Like my contemporary, yes, yes, like my contemporary Ayanna Pressley, the first African American female Congresswoman in Massachusetts who’s [inaudible] to say, she is black and a woman, and proud to be both, however, that is not the totality of who she is.

Like our very own Kansas Congresswoman Sharice Davids, who like myself overcame a disadvantaged background, worked her way through law school, and decided to use her talents to come back and give back to her community to create opportunities for others.

Their success speaks of countless hours – sweat, blood, and tears – that women, girls, and allies, present and past, have committed to the struggle for complete freedom from all oppressive systems, which were so long and served to silence our collective dreams. And make mockery.

But, today is a new day.

We must not squander this moment of national events, but harness it to manifest a future that those who came before us never imagined possible. However, we must be real about the obstacles ahead.

So many of our neighborhoods in Kansas City are blighted due to a history of disinvestment by the government and lack of political will. Often treated as if economic social transformation is not possible. If we intend to grow Kansas City together we have, the wave of national support for women must translate to the actual transformation for the single mother right here in Kansas City.

The woman who dreams of being a small business owner, but lacks access to quality education, child care, affordable housing, and mentors – all these things keep her dreams stuck in neutral.

The violence in our great city must be challenged, not only by supporting police officers with training and tools they need to do their jobs, but effectively, more effectively, but also having honest conversations in our community which in turn results in actionable strategies to address the ever evolving challenges of poverty, substance abuse, and hopelessness.

I believe, I believe we have already grown as a city and a nation to understand that mental health services for those in crisis are preferable to jail, prisons, and [inaudible]. [Inaudible] our responsibility to provide access to that care. We cannot, in good faith, continue to separate the culture of violence within certain communities from the mental, emotional, socio and economic, and political realities that Kansas Citians face within these very communities. We must create a bold, new vision for the future of Kansas City.

When we make all members of our community equal stakeholders in our success we grow Kansas City together. When we serve the entrepreneurial spirit of women of our city, that have been traditionally forgotten, provide resources for their dream to come to fruition, we grow Kansas City together. When we prioritize the mental health of our residents and understand the trauma in these communities, that they serve, we grow Kansas City together. [Inaudible] we grow Kansas City together.

Kansas City Councilwoman Jolie Justus – January 19, 2019.

https://showmeprogress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/ste-006-1.mp3

The transcript:

Kansas City Councilwoman Jolie Justus: …You, the women and men of Kansas City are warming my heart on this cold, cold day. I want to thank you so much for your energy. And I want to tell you a little story. I want to start a little bit slower.

And I want to say, has anyone ever had this experience? Has anyone ever had someone approach you and say, where’s your smile sweetheart? Hey baby, why don’t you smile? Here’s one of my personal favorites – smile council lady.

You know, it’s a seemingly harmless suggestion. One I’m sure that most of us have heard on multiple occasions, whether we were sitting around a conference table at work or, you know, some stranger passing us on the street. But, you know, it’s unwanted advice that is frequently given to women leaders. And it is never suggested to our male counterparts.

And I want to take a moment right now to tell you why I’m not smiling. I’m not smiling because someone asked me this week why we need another women’s march. Didn’t we make our point already? Thank you.

I’m not smiling because this summer I watched some of our nation’s highest ranking leaders, they told Christine Blasey Ford that they believed her but it didn’t matter. I’m not smiling because one in three women have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. I’m not smiling because the Violence Against Women Act expired due to the Trump shutdown. I’m not smiling because violence against transgender people, particularly transgender women of color, is at an all time high. And I’m not smiling because at the current rate of change the gender pay gap will not close until twenty-one nineteen, that’s one hundred years. So that’s why I’m not smiling. And that’s why we march. That’s why we march. And when we march in our own schedule we will smile.

And lately, I’ve been smiling a lot because I want to.

I am smiling today because I see you marching in solidarity and I see light within the darkness. I’m smiling because the State of Kansas elected Laura Kelly and Sharice Davids. I’m smiling because a record number of women were just elected to the Missouri General Assembly. I’m smiling because Kansas state employees have finally earned parental leave. I’m smiling because thirteen years after we put the work in in Jefferson City we finally passed a lethality review in an effort to decrease domestic violence deaths. I’m smiling because the city of Kansas City stopped requesting salary history, reducing the gender pay gap. And we unanimously passed a law that allows domestic and sexual survivors to break their leases and escape their abusers.

And I’m smiling, I’m smiling because it was women in power with our male allies who got these things done.

And we’re not gonna stop. We will continue to stand and expose violence, harassment and assault. We will use calls against us, those meant to silence and discredit us, to lift each other up. Nevertheless, sisters, we persisted.

It’s been two years since that sunny day in Washington Park when we first gathered to raise our collective voice. It’s been two years and we have not stopped working. We are no longer fighting from the sidelines though, we are no longer on the sidelines. We are supporting and electing women, people of color, and immigrants at every single level of government.

And now that we have a seat at the table, now that we have a seat at the table we are finally moving on with that menu. And although we have made huge strides we cannot slow down. It is only when we lift up and value all women that we will really win this fight.

So join with me today and let’s renew our commitment. Let’s renew our commitment that we will continue to march, we will continue to run, and we will continue to win. This is not an easy commitment, though. I don’t want you to think this is gonna be easy. It’s not gonna happen overnight.

Violence prevention, climate change, racism, voting rights, immigration – these are all important and none of these things can wait. But know this, in your fight you are not alone. When you feel discouraged, when you are overwhelmed and tired, remember that your friends and neighbors are working just as hard on the issues that you cannot personally tackle today. When you need a rest please take it. Know that we will be there to pick up your torch. We’ve got your back. You have to take care of yourself if you want to continue this march. And yes, that means unplugging from time to time. That also mean getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, spending time with friends, getting outside, and having fun. Do those things.

So, what’s next? What do we need you to do? Well, there are seventy-three days until your next municipal election. There are three hundred and eighty-one days until filing opens for state House and Senate. I want women in this room to file for those seats. There are six hundred and fifty-four days until the next presidential election.

Remember this, when we vote we win. When we run we win. And when we march we win. And we are on the right side of history. We’ve got this.
