Senator Roy Blunt (r) commented, via Twitter, on the death of Senator John McCain:

Senator Roy Blunt @RoyBlunt
As I served with John McCain he became one of my heroes. We didn’t always agree but he was always motivated to do what he thought was the right thing.
9:16 PM – 25 Aug 2018

Some of the responses:

You could learn a lot from him, Senator.

Too bad that motivation did not rub off on you.

The public is notably sad at his passing because we don’t believe any of the remaining @GOP Senators have his strength of convictions for country over party. Including you, Roy.

You should try doing the right thing Roy. Why haven’t you marked up the bill to protect our upcoming election. Because the WH asked you to sit on it? Do what John would do, your own moral compass is broken.

Carry on his legacy. Do the right thing. Stand up for country over party.

You should be ashamed of yourself. McCain was a good man who did what was right, even if it wasn’t in his own best interest. You, sir, are no John McCain.

You are part of the reason term limits need to exist

The only time you see the right thing is over your shoulder as you run the opposite direction.

Honor him by emulating him.

Maybe you could quit being a spineless, corrupt member of the GOP and learn from him?

Then why aren’t you following in his footsteps?

John McCain was a man of honor and conviction. Americans are proud of his service and representation of “we the people”. His integrity, compassion and understanding of those he lived and loved among will be missed. Follow his lead. Preserve his legacy.

It’s a shame the president treated him with such disrespect.

You call him your hero but his integrity and ability to subjugate his personal agenda for a greater good have not seem to have rubbed off on you one bit.

John McCain will leave a legacy of service, honor, and integrity. @RoyBlunt will be a footnote under the asterisk next to Trump’s name as the only president to go directly from the Oval Office to prison. The footnote will just say “supporting cast of traitors”

hey Roy why don’t you strive to be more like him?

I assume y’all didn’t agree when it comes to protecting America. Johns thumbs down to stop you and your friends was heroic. But your a Trump partner in destroying America.

Yea that’s where you disagreed.

He was the only honorable remaining member of the #GOP. You can’t hold a candle to him.

Maybe you should give doing the right thing a try Roy! It’s ok your donors will understand….

Time to get right, Roy. Speak up against the lies, the racism, the hate mongering. Do it for Missouri.

I wish I could say the same of you. #MeanTweets

@clairecmc wrote a beautiful, loving tweet regarding her peer from the opposing Republican Party. Consider following her example.
God rest the brave soul of John McCain, a true American hero.

What are you motivated to do? Not the right thing, obviously.

So then why can’t you do the right thing, @RoyBlunt ??

Your disagreements were more about him following his patriotic sense of country and you following the biggest donor. You may be from the same party but history will remember you as being from different groups Patriots vs. Traitors

Your constituents are waiting for you to do the same. Please listen to them.

Yeah. We certainly can’t say the same for you.

Talk about faint praise. One man was a leader. One man is not.

You wish you were as patriotic is John McCain. He voted for what was right rather than what was best for his pocket unlike you.

I’m still waiting to see you do the right thing. Good thing I’m not planning on holding my breath.

If he is one of your heroes, you have long way to go to be anything like him. Actions speak louder than words , buster.

When I first read this, it bothered me for some reason, then I realized how disingenuous this comment truly is. Your like Mr. Trump, not genuine.

“what he thought was the right thing”? what kind of back-handed comment is that? are you even capable of commenting something positive about him? or are you not permitted?

We are waiting for you to emulate John McCain and do the right thing for the people of Missouri. Your loyality to Trump will be your downfall. You are #GOPCorrupt and #GOPComplicit.

One more thing Roy, You stood by and let Trump say some nasty things about John McCain and you said NOTHING!! If someone said something about my Hero, you can bet your ass I would be all over them. Save your BS for someone who gives a shit!

You do realize that YOUR president doesn’t agree with you, right?

I can’t imagine too many people agree with you. Your sole purpose is to line your pockets

Funny I did not see you stand up for your hero when tRump has been attacking him!

And on and on…

In The New Yorker:

Will Anyone in the Trump Administration Ever Be Held Accountable for the Zero-Tolerance Policy?
By Jonathan Blitzer August 22, 2018

….I asked the current Administration official whether the outcry over family separation had caught the government by surprise. It had, the official said. “The expectation was that the kids would go to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, that the parents would get deported, and that no one would care.” Yet, when it became clear that the public did, the Administration chose not to change course.

Early this afternoon Senator Claire McCaskill (D) stopped by a coordinated campaign headquarters in Lee’s Summit in Eastern Jackson County to speak to and greet campaign volunteers, many who were later going out for door to door campaigning or phone banking on behalf of Democratic Party candidates. Close to a hundred volunteers were in attendance.

And, of course, outside in the parking lot were the usual opposition trackers and costumed actors. Don’t ask.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) – Lee’s Summit, Missouri – August 25, 2018.

Senator McCaskill spent about twenty minutes covering a wide range of issues important to working families in Missouri and giving a campaign update to the volunteers.

After speaking to the campaign volunteers Senator McCaskill took a few minutes to answer questions from the media:

Question: …Could you talk a little bit about the drought and your concerns about Missouri right now, [cross talk] [inaudible] can do about it?

Senator Claire McCaskill (D): Well [crosstalk], the, the, our agricultural community is getting a double whammy right now, um, a drought and tariffs. Uh, it is a crisis, um, that, frankly, I don’t, I’m not sure that the president really understands that many of these markets we’re losing, particularly soybeans in China are not going to be easily recoverable. I mean, this is something we’ve spent millions of dollars, working towards establishing a market for soybeans in China, and now they’re sourcing their beans somewhere else. Well, they’re not going to come back to American soybeans like that. Uh, it will be, um, a hangover that will dramatically affect our state for some time to come. Even if it gets fixed. And it doesn’t appear to me that it’s getting fixed anytime soon.

And, the drought, obviously, we’re going to be doing a lot of work that, to get, there are programs in place to help when we have drought or flood, and obviously, we’ll be monitoring those programs and making sure that those monies are getting out to the farmers, the crop insurance, the other things that they’re entitled to, on a timely basis.

Question: So, a lot of your Democratic colleague are calling for, uh, the delay of Brett Kavanaugh’s hearing. Where do you stand on that?

Senator McCaskill: I’m not sure that, uh, first of all, it, it’s not going to be delayed. Um, I’m trying to avoid all the political posturing on this nomination and keep my head down and figure it out based on his record, based on his opinions, on issues that I think are really important.

Dark money being at the top of the list. Um, I have begun to look at some of his opinions about dark money and I’m concerned. he wrote one opinion that said he wasn’t sure that we could constitutionally limit the ability of foreign countries to come in do issue advocacy. Well, if you notice those ads that are hiding as issue advocacy and they say call someone, that’s issue advocacy and I think most people would say those are political commercials.

So, I’m very worried about, um, what has happened with dark money and that’s going to be one of the focuses of my decision is, is his opinions and what he says in the hearings about dark money.

Question: And you met with him earlier this week [crosstalk][inaudible].

Senator McCaskill: Uh huh, I did.

Question: Is there anything else that stood out to you from talking with him?

Senator McCaskill: Well, we, we spent a lot of time on that. I’m not going to go into the details of the conversation, but we spent a lot of time on dark money.

Question: Senator, you said after the primary that your Supreme Court vote is not a political winner, that there are going to be people in the state that are mad at you either way. How, are you concerned that this could really effect your reelection, that this could be a, a big issue in the race, and depending on how you vote?

Senator McCaskill: Well, I, as I said, and I do believe this, that there’s not a side to take that would be a political winner. Which I think in, it’s one of the nice things about representing a state like mine, you’re never going to make everybody happy with a vote. So what you try to do is the right thing. And be able to explain it. And so I’m going to make up my mind based on the concerns I have about constitutional decisions that have been made over the last decade and that could change with him on the court. And I will, uh, explain my vote to Missourians based on those issues and hope they understand.

Show Me Progress: Senator, based on reports, the administration, when they were dealing with immigrant families, they, the, the reports stated that they, they didn’t really make plans because they didn’t think anybody would care.

Senator McCaskill: You mean about separating [crosstalk] the children?

Show Me Progress: Separating the children.

Senator McCaskill: I don’t know that I’ve seen that report, but obviously that’s, um, that would be troubling. Because I think anybody would realize that pulling babies out of their parents’ arms is never a winner under any circumstances. And, I mean, I think we’ve got to secure peoples’ appearance at court, but there are plenty of ways to do, secure peoples’ appearance at court without separating children from their families.

After taking questions from the media Senator McCaskill remained at the headquarters and continued to speak with and greet individual volunteers. Selfies are definitely a campaign ritual these days.

“Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten us into.”

Why is it sometimes this way out outstate street fairs/festivals?

In the Kansas City Star:

Spotted at a Missouri fair: Uncle Sam manning a ‘shooting gallery’ of GOP opponents
August 24, 2018 02:06 PM
By Matt Campbell

A GOP “shooting gallery” manned by an Uncle Sam at the Holden, Mo., Street Fair has some people concerned….

[….]

Not to put too fine a point on it, yesterday an individual dressed up as Uncle Sam set up shop with a representation of shooting gallery, complete with a toy gun, made up of photos of Democrats – this next to a republican college student group booth at the Holden, Missouri fair. Of course, either intentionally or randomly, who knows, the fair organizers had placed the Johnson County Democrats booth directly across from the republican booth.

People took pictures and then posted them on social media.

Raymond James
Small town Missouri racism. Booth selling KKK/ Confederate flags with no US flags for sale or present. The US flag in the picture is the booth next door. You do not get to pick your neighbors.
GOP had a “game ” toy gun and a Shooting Gallery with Senators pictures on it. Great Family Fun shooting at Senators.

Raymond James is a Johnson County Democrat who was manning the Democratic party both at the fair.

The flag vendor booth was another booth which was in close proximity to the other booths.

A photo of the republican booth and shooting gallery posted in the Facebook post comments:

In case you’re not convinced, the shooting gallery is labeled “shooting gallery”.

We’ve seen this individual at public events before.

With a Hillary Clinton (D) effigy in a tiny jail cell outside the Missouri State Fair Governor’s Ham Breakfast in 2016:

Outside the Missouri State Fair Governor’s Ham Breakfast [August 2016 file photo].

And at the same venue a little over a week ago:

Outside the Missouri State Fair Governor’s Ham Breakfast [August 2018 file photo].

In addition to the newspaper coverage we’ve heard that a Kansas City metro market television station sent a crew to the fair today.

In an interesting turn of events, demonstrating brilliant public relations and damage control strategies, the street fair authorities have apparently issued an edict of “a plague on both your houses” and booted the Democrats and republicans from the fair.

Don’t you just love small town Missouri?

Update:

Johnson County Missouri Democrats

This post is from Ray James Chair Johnson County Central Committee.

As previously posted, the Holden Chamber of Commerce asked the Democratic Booth to leave at the same time as the Republican Booth from the Holden Fair Tonight. We did not ask or discuss reasons why. We packed up when told to do so and left. We were told we may still participate in the parade 5 pm Saturday.

At this time we are considering it. I will post by 2 pm Saturday if we will participate.

For those scheduled to staff the booth I thank you for your time.

Any questions or concerns about the actions of the Holden Chamber of Commerce Fair Committee and what / how they reached a decision should be directed to them. Remember they put in long hours to put on a fair in a very thankless job.

There was no yelling, name calling, heckling, interference by Democrats staffing the booth with any other booths at the fair.

We did not complain to the Fair organizers, Holden Police or the staff at the Republican booth about any actions by any booths at the fair.

We did notify the Johnson County Republican Central Committee, Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler staff, Secretary of State [Attorney General] Josh Hawleys campaign staff of the unacceptable actions of the Republicans at the booth with their having a Shooting Gallery “Game” complete with Targets of US Senator Claire McCaskill and a toy gun.

Tonight the game was renamed as the words Shooting Gallery were replaced and the toy guns were not present. I did not see if the pictures had been changed. The Gentleman who brought the “game” was again in attendance. Interestingly he brought an American Flag and insisted he had one present on the 23 Aug. I refer you to the pictures posted from the 23 Aug. The Gentleman clearly has memory issues or was untruthful on this issue.

I was contacted by several media organizations and did give two interviews between 3:30 and 4:00 pm to Channel 5 and Channel 41. In which, I stressed the unacceptable actions of the Johnson County Central Committee Sponsored Booth.

It is never OK to Joke about shooting a person or to encourage others to actually commit violence. As to the intent of the “game ” I would direct all questions to the Johnson County Central Committee as it was their booth.

Any further questions by Johnson County Democratic Club members or Central Committee members please contact Ray James.

The CC does not intend to issue a press release or to contact media concerning this matter but we do anticipate further media interest. I have referred all questions, as to why we had to suspend operations, from media organizations back to the organizers of the Fair as we did not discuss/ask.

Immigration: Trump says jump; Hawley leaps into the muck

Claire McCaskill, immigration, Josh Hawley

Josh Hawley, we are frequently reminded, went to Stanford and Yale. He’s supposed to be a smart man. He also claims to be a religious man and as such is supposed to be compassionate toward those who are needy and persecuted.

As a consequence, Hawley faces a serious dilemma. He clearly believes he has to stick to Trump like a burr lest the deplorables be aroused – no matter how absurd, dishonest, cruel, or destructive Trump reveals himself to be. This dilemma is especially evident when it comes to Trump’s favorite hobby, keeping dark complexioned people from sh*****e countries out of the U.S.

It’s obvious that it’s a difficult slog. When Trump announces that we must deport immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers “with no Judges or Court Cases,” Hawley does his best to evade the issue. He has refused to tell us whether or not he supports constitutionally mandated due process for immigrants, a question that ought to be a no-brainer for a guy with his background. In the words of one of his primary opponents, Austen Petersen, “Josh Hawley is an ivy-league educated, constitutional lawyer, who is either constitutionally illiterate, or too much of a coward to admit what he knows is true. The 14th Amendment is clear.”

When it comes to family separation, an almost universally denounced policy, Hawlely  tried to deflect. A the Kansas City Star put it, he “stopped short of calling for the policy to end immediately and put the blame on McCaskill” (WTF!) Even Mr. Test-the-Wind Mumblecore himself, Roy Blunt, managed to do better than that.

Sad as it it, these efforts represent the extent of Hawley’s self-assertion – he’s mostly a good little Trump trooper. He calls for “securing the border and building the wall,” while blaming Claire McCaskill and by extension Democrats, for failing to fix a broken immigration system in a Congress totally dominated by risk-averse Republicans. Hawley evidently doesn’t seem to know that his fellow GOPers have refused again and again to consider bipartisan immigration efforts, including those in which McCaskill participated. As for that storied wall – the one that could cost billions and do little or nothing to protect the border, well, we all know baby knows better, but, hey, talk is cheap.

Seriously, though, isn’t it kind of sad to see a guy endorsed by that supposed moral arbiter, former Senator John Danforth, go along to get along? I guess Danforth’s hoping he’ll clean up good after the election. In case he can’t get it together, though, I offer the following list of what I have learned about immigration over the past couple of years. Perhaps, after he’s washed off the Trump filth, Hawley might find it informative:

  •  Conditions in the Central American Northern triangle and in the Middle East from which so many are fleeing are truly horrific.
  • That horrific situation is in many respects the result of past actions by the United States:
    • In the eighties the United States backed vicious right wing dictatorships in Central America and helped train death squads while we participated in or instigated civil wars that displaced thousands.
    • Later, the U.S.-led war on drugs “succeeded” in South America by pushing violent cartels north, into Central America.
    • Lax U.S. gun laws also factor into the levels of violence; an estimated 200,000 guns purchased in the U.S. are annually smuggled into Central America.
    • The violent MS-13 gang that Trump uses to scare his immigrant-averse base was, in the words of one writer, “made in America” and exported to back to Central America.
    • I’m pretty sure I don’t need to detail the role played by the U.S. in destabilizing the Middle East, an area from which another group of demonized immigrants hail?
  • Immigrants do not contribute to crime in the U.S. at a higher level than native born citizens.
  • The Washington Post notes that studies have shown that “states with larger shares of undocumented immigrants tended to have lower crime rates than states with smaller shares in the years 1990 through 2014.”
  • Anecdotes about specific immigrant wrongdoers do not substantiate the assertion that an entire group is crime prone. Numbers tell the true story.
  • Immigrants do not “take” jobs from native-born Americans.
  • Currently, several industries are threatened by worker shortages that have resulted from the Trumpian anti-immigrant jihad (see here, here , here and here).
  • Legal immigrants pay taxes.
  • At least 50% of undocumented immigrants also pay state and federal income taxes and contribute to the Social Security trust funds – to the tune of billions of dollars.
  • The taxes paid by immigrants help makeup the shortfall in tax revenues and Social Security reserves in the U.S. where the birth rate has been slowing for decades.
  • Anti-immigrant sentiment has been highly racialized in response to political demagoguery – which has also encouraged already existing anti-immigrant, racist, hate groups.

Given the facts listed above, maybe Hawley ought to answer these questions next time he’s asked about one or another of Trump’s immigration tirades:

  • As professed a Christian doesn’t Hawley have a moral responsibility to generously respond to “the least of these,” which today’s Central American and Middle Eastern refugees surely are?
  • Wouldn’t Hawley, were he to be elected to a powerful national position, have an equally heavy moral responsibility to help clean up after foreign policy blunders and try to undo the harm we have done to these people?
  • Wouldn’t Hwley be endangering our future by catering to racial and cultural fears and ignoring the important role immigrants play in our economy and could continue to play if he were to to act in good faith to try to “fix” our immigration policy?
  • Does Hawley really want to be allied with white supremacists, neo-nazis and other hate groups?

How about it Josh Hawley?

The forecast is cloudy

missouri, Proposition A, right to get paid less, Right to work

A social media meme circulation for working people:

If you think the overwhelming defeat of Proposition A on the August 7th ballot ends “right to get paid less” in Missouri, you’re wrong. From the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on August 8, 2018:

Statement on Proposition A
Posted on August 8, 2018
The following statement is from Daniel P. Mehan, president and CEO of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Using a roughly $20 million war chest, union bosses have blocked Missourians from having the freedom to decide whether or not they join a union and pay dues. As our state became a national battleground over worker freedom, millions of union dollars poured into Missouri to persuade voters. These out-of-state groups sent money to Missouri because they were fearful of losing out if Missourians had the power to stop their paychecks from being siphoned to pad union coffers and play politics.

While supporters of Proposition A were vastly outspent, we still believe freedom to work is right for Missouri.
Most states have already passed worker freedom laws. In addition to empowering individual workers in regards to union membership, these laws are important for competitiveness and economic development. In the lead up to today’s vote, the Missouri Chamber used statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis to decisively show that freedom to work states are outperforming their non-freedom to work counterparts.

The numbers don’t lie. Missouri will continue to fall behind until we pass freedom to work into law.

Unfortunately, the unions used their massive cash advantage to drown out our positive economic message. They spread misinformation and lies, which misled many Missourians about what Proposition A would do for them and for our state’s economy.

This statement is not a concession. With the future of our state’s economy on the line, we cannot concede hope that Missouri will soon join most other states and pass freedom to work protections.

Missouri has taken positive steps to improve our economy in recent years. We have passed tax reform and worked to improve our state’s legal climate. We are making great strides toward making our workforce one of the most competitive in the world. Freedom to work remains an important and worthy goal that the Missouri Chamber will continue to pursue.

The use of “Freedom to work” is an interesting acknowledgement that “right to work” is now damaged branding.

“…union bosses have blocked Missourians…” Dudes, the voters decided, and your defeat at the ballot box was epic.

Whining about money in Missouri politics, eh? We look forward to the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry endorsing the Clean Missouri initiative on the November 2018 ballot.

Limits for thee, but not for me. Via the Missouri Ethics Commission:

C180291 05/31/2018 Missourians For Freedom To Work Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry PO Box 149 Jefferson City MO 65102 5/31/2018 $100,000.00

[emphasis added]

“…This statement is not a concession…” You heard them.

The enablers and funders of the anti-worker majority in the Missouri General Assembly will continue to prevail upon them to bring back “right to get paid less”. The only way to stop this is to vote out those State Representatives and State Senators who do their bidding.

Remember that in November. They’re planning on you forgetting.

Rep. Vicky Hartzler @RepHartzler
During his more than 10 years serving on the D.C. Circuit Court, Brett Kavanaugh has shown his ability to respect, uphold, and interpret the Constitution fairly. I hope Senator McCaskill will decide to support his nomination after their meeting tomorrow.
2:24 PM – 20 Aug 2018 from Washington, DC

Wait, is the House in session?

Some of the Twitter responses:

77 days until we vote you out of office
#FireVicky #MO04

That they should release all the documents if he is so wonderful. #FireVicky #LiesMatter

I hope @clairecmc remembers the support the @GOP did not give Merrick Garland and that they are hiding something in Kavanaugh’s records. I hope she votes no and will call her office today to remind her!

@RepHartzler states the the Kavanaugh is ok, so I’m sure nothing in his years covered by unreviewed documents could be all that bad. Or it is…. maybe we should get to read it actually…

If he has nothing to hide they should release all his papers. Transparency is essential to democracy.

Why? Is carrying all that water getting heavy?

Uh huh. So is lying in a hearing for confirmation to be a judge protected in the Constitution?

You/GOP: We’re fine w/treason, corruption, obstruction of justice, kids in cages, attacks on allies, our Constitution & institutions, sleazy payoffs, RU attacks, criminality, thousands of lies, racism, mentally unfit 45 as long as we get judges! And we refuse to show all his docs

Wait, didn’t he get caught lying under oath?

Now that Trump has been implicated in crime to influence the 2016 election by paying off women to cover up his illicit affairs, no Supreme Court Justice should be allowed to go forward. #CrookedTrump #Lockhimup

He lied under oath. Why are you okay with that?

Not if she want my vote in November! He’s literally promised to protect Trump from any indictment! Surely you cannot expect any positive reaction to this ridiculous statement! If you can further the cause of justice, get out of the way!

I hope Senator McCaskill gives him the same amount of time, consideration, and support that you give to your constituents, Congresswoman. #FireVicky

Ouch.

Oh did they release his records?

You know who had a great, moderate record? Merrick Garland.

Do you support review of his past decisions which are being withheld by the GOP? What are you hiding? Tell us why you want to help hide his history?

#Puppet

Now that the president has been implicated in a federal crime, Kavanaugh’s hearings should be delayed. You should be stepping up and demanding investigations into what has happened. Your constituents and country over party Vicky.

I think if over a year left was enough for Republicans to stall a SC nominee, then being implicated in crimes and easily meeting the standards for impeachment is definitely worth blocking anyone trump nominates.
What makes you want to destroy your country like this, vicky?

#ReleaseTheRecords and let WE THE PEOPLE decide. #WhatAreTheyHiding?

This is not the time to think of yourself and reelection. This decision will affect the people long after you are gone. Put the people first.

You must be out of your damn mind. Release the records.

They’re not buying it.
