April 8, 2009 – Voted to allow convicted sexual predators to work as coaches forour kids (HA 1 HA 2, HCS HB 62):

HB62 is an omnibus bill consisting of over 54 provisions including one that would prohibit certain categories of sexual offenders from coaching children under 17 years of age. A vote against this bill could have been directed at any of the 54 provisions, many of which might not stand up to critical examination.

4th Congressional District, Ebola, facebook, missouri, Vicky Hartzler

Representative Vicky Hartzler (r) weighed in on Ebola on Facebook:

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler shared a link.

October 24

In light of the recent diagnosis of a health care worker with Ebola in New York, I have expanded my call for control measures to stem the spread of this deadly disease in the United States. […]

Much hilarity ensued:

[….] Vicky, I’d really like to know why, on the one hand you and your colleagues scream DEREGULATION…. FREEDOM FROM Government… CUT EVERYTHING… lower taxes on the rich…YET, YET… When some type of hyped up “disaster” occurs.. (How stupid to worry more about Ebola than feeding our citizens)… that can be oh, so politicized.. you and your coherts suddenly want MORE REGULATION… MORE LAWS… and instead of having a mature and intellectual understanding of a situation immediately start blaming our President. You are such opportunists. It is pathetic and immoral, in my opinion to monger some obscure fear to gain votes. I cannot believe that people actually fall for this.

8 · October 24 at 4:59pm

In reply to that comment:

[….] you are correct. I feel the Congresswoman has come totally unhinged and should see professional help.

And more comments:

[….] Are you also calling a ban on firearms because of the 39 school deaths from shootings?

October 24 at 7:31pm

[….] Never act or react out of fear, please!

October 24 at 4:41pm

[….] Vicky- You better worry more about dying from influenza than Ebola, since the flu kills more people in the US every year. Do us all a big favor, stay out of medical policy and leave it up to the medical professionals. Every time politicians and journalists start talking about Ebola, the hysteria gets worse. Being a health professional I resent having a politician telling me how to do my job.

October 24 at 7:23pm

[….] Please don’t use this horrible epidemic for political gain. The CDC is saying that they only way to stop the spread of Ebola is to stop it in Africa. The health care workers have already been self monitoring themselves. That is why the Dr in NY made sure to be transferred to the hospital with an isolation unit.

October 24 at 4:28pm

[….] Like all of your fellow right wing contemporaries you seem to have all kinds of recommendations but zero actual experience with handling a deadly disease. All you are doing is trying to make political hay through fear. I do not want a bunch of people who have proven over and over again that the welfare of their constituents is at the bottom of their priority list making any decisions for my safety or the country’s safety. Leave that to the experts. The people who DO have experience – and training – to make recommendations. And leave it to people who have actually shown that they value my safety to evaluate those recommendations and take appropriate action. I realize that you on the right see the Ebola issue as a gift right now, but it’s not. If you aren’t willing to do your job and work WITH the President and the experts, then at least stay out of it and quit trying to make it your next “fake scandal” or political ad.

October 24 at 11:53am

[….] So whats next Vik? Have us all report to FEMA camps to be safe? That would be ironic. How bout you resign and do us all a big favor.

October 24 at 6:21pm

[….] Ebola’s been around for decades and nobody cared. Now that it’s come to the U.S., the low information voters are worried because their masters at Fox News have them scared poopless. I can’t imagine what it must be like to live in fear all the time. You all got a do nothing… that has done nothing in office. She couldn’t even vote for the Violence against Women Act without toeing a party line and embarrassing this district. You all got rid of old Ike because he was a Democrat. At least that guy had honor and integrity. I hope Vicky burns the district to the ground. You all deserve it.

October 24 at 4:29pm

[….] And btw, we VERY POSSIBLY had a vaccine for Ebola by now, as there are a few great possibilities in the research chain. Unfortunately when you take away R&D money, science must then triage our health. The finger points right back at you and I am so very sorry for my nation that somehow you and your ilk have haranged the ignorant and false news watchers into trusting you. You have not fooled me and I will fight and fight to spread the truth.

October 24 at 5:02pm

They’re evidently not true believers.

When it comes to Arthur Lieber and Ann Wagner, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch gets it just right

Ann Wagner, Arthur Lieber, missouri, political endorsements

In its endorsement of Democrat Arthur Lieber over Republican Ann Wagner for Missouri’s 2nd district congressional seat, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch had this to say:

There’s a saying in politics that elections are won by those who show up. Perhaps that’s so for voters, but a key part of U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner’s strategy for re-election in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District is to not show up.

The paper notes that Wagner can’t even manage to put correct contact information on her campaign Webpage and concludes that her silent campaign stragegy is predicated on fear of a “fatal error.”

Think about it. Wagner wants to continue representing our interests in Washington. Yet she is clearly worried that standing on her past record and letting her constituents hear her defend positions could stall her political career. Bear in mind that Wagner has been touted as a big part of the GOP’s answer to the “war on women” rubric that was inflamed by folks like her predecessor, Rep. Todd Akin of “legitimate rape” fame. Doesn’t her campaign behavior suggest that perhaps the main difference between the two is simply that she’s able to hold her tongue?

This strategy certainly seems to be prevalent in the Republican party as a whole this time around. Take, for example, the Iowa senatorial candidate, Joni Ernest, another one of those GOP women who have been notably eager to out-bluster the ignorant and angry old white men that dominate the party. One reason that so many commentators try to claim (falsely) that Republicans have stepped back from the radical right wing precipice they’ve been rushing toward is that extremists like Ernest have been persuaded to either adopt the same strategic silence as Wagner – or, as in the case of Colorado’s Cory Gardner, to disavow their more extreme positions for the nonce. Of the gun-toting, agenda 21-fearing, conspiracy-mongering Ernest, Greg Sargent suggests, apropos her unwillingness to meet with the editorial boards of Iowa’s major newspapers, that:

… Ernst doesn’t see interviews with newspaper editorial boards as an opportunity; she sees them as a threat. According to nearly all recent polling, the Republican leads this race, despite her often bizarre radicalism and conspiracy theories. Why sit down for lengthy, in-depth interviews, face questions about her extremist ideology and fringe ideas, and risk making matters worse for herself with inadequate answers in the campaign’s closing days?

Much the same could be said of Wagner. There may still be some folks out there who think of her as the anti-Akin although there seems to be little difference between the two when it comes to their voting record, a fact that might become salient in a more open forum than those she selects.

Nor is it a sure bet that the only distinction that one could draw between Akin and Wagner would be helpful to her. Wagner has played a far more active role than Akin when it comes to gung-ho representation of corporate interests; one of her first legislative forays, for instance, was an effort to weaken the consumer protections provided by Dodd-Frank. Last July I wrote that:

Wagner has been promoted as a GOP anti-Akin although her views about many issues that made Todd Akin, well,  Todd Akin are not too different. The real difference between Akin and Wagner may be their willingness to dance to the big money tune. There’s a reason that Ann Wagner can pull in the bucks, and an unwashed Tea Party favorite like Ed Martin can’t. I’m betting that a big part of her appeal hinges on her highly connected history within the Missouri and national Republican party – that is to say, the corporatist wing of the party, which we sometimes refer to as the Republican establishment. She may be able to polish up the fringewing base when necessary, but she quite clearly knows who’s polishing what as far as her political career goes. As a result, Wagner won’t miss a chance to signal that she’s going to do her best for the 1 percent who pay her campaign bills. Missouri now has a another GOPer camping out in what has been up until now exclusively Roy Blunt territory.

So who is it that Wagner fears offending? Tea Partiers who may figure out that she’s doing what she does for the benefit of the big-money boys rather than the unwashed out-state rabble waving their misunderstood copies of the Constitution? Women who believe that government has no place dictating their reproductive health choices? Folks who are tired of job-creation rhetoric accompanied by obstructionism that slows economic growth? Those who now have insurance thanks to the Obamacare that she still vilifies? We can only conjecture. What we do know is that when people try to hide something, it’s because they’ve got something to hide.

19th Judicial Circuit, Brian Stumpe, Cole County, missouri, Pat Joyce, Republican State Leadership Committee, RSLC

Yesterday, via Facebook:

Friends to Re-Elect Judge Pat Joyce

3rd OPEN LETTER TO THE VOTERS AND THE PEOPLE OF COLE COUNTY – October 26, 2014

Distorting a 32-year record of public service and undermining the trust that this community has placed in me as a county court judge for the last 20 years is disgraceful and sad. A campaign with over $200,000 at its disposal-directly and indirectly-can spend a lot to do that.

On Friday, the News Tribune reported on a mailing sent to voters that misrepresents a decision I made in 2008 involving the law that prohibits a registered sex offender’s residence within 1000 feet of a school. The mailing doesn’t tell you the sex offender owned his property 7 years prior to the law’s enactment and that the Missouri Constitution prohibits retroactive application of laws. The Missouri Supreme Court unanimously affirmed my strict application of the constitutional provision in that case.

This case is a prime example of why politics should have no place in how a judge performs her job, applying the facts to the law.

The decision on November 4 should come down to the person the voters trust the most, and the person they believe is most qualified.

The large sums of money being spent by and for Brian Stumpe are staggering. The vast majority of his support is being provided by a person or persons unknown, and that should be alarming to citizens of this county who believe judges should be fair and impartial.

Contributors to my campaign, non-lawyers and lawyers alike, are publicly reported. They expect no favors-all they want is a fair court that’s free of outside influence. But because of secret donors to Mr. Stumpe’s campaign, no one will know who might have influence over him if he’s elected. The integrity and independence of the court will be questioned, and that should never happen. It’s a matter of trust.

This week, Mr. Stumpe has a final opportunity to appear at an open candidates’ forum and face the public. On Thursday, Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m., at Lincoln University’s Pawley Theatre, candidates for county elective offices will appear to talk and take questions. I will be attending. Will Mr. Stumpe be there?

I am deeply thankful and humbled by the support you’ve given me during these last weeks of the campaign, and during my long service to the county. I will continue to work to be worthy of that support.

Judge Pat Joyce

19th Judicial Circuit (Cole County)

That about sums it up.

2014, 2nd Congressional District, Ann Wagner, Arthur Lieber, campaign finance, missouri

This says it all, in today’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Editorial: For Congress in Missouri 2nd, Arthur Lieber shows up better

There’s a saying in politics that elections are won by those who show up. Perhaps that’s so for voters, but a key part of U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner’s strategy for re-election in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District is to not show up.

She’s raised a lot of money – $2.19 million. She appears in controlled settings for photo-ops with friendly faces. She avoids going anywhere near her opponents.

Good luck asking about it: The contact number listed on her campaign’s website is not a working number. The email address for media inquiries gets you a 404 error message.

The 52-year-old Ballwin Republican knows the election is hers to lose….

….We had hoped for a more independent voice when we endorsed Ms. Wagner in 2012. This time around, we recommend that 2nd District voters choose Democrat Arthur Lieber of Creve Coeur….

….he’s right: Campaign money is the root of all evil in politics. Arthur Lieber is not afraid to show up and say so.

Maybe at some point in the future incumbents with access to unlimited funds won’t have to worry about those pesky voters. Oh, wait…

A television ad:

various: Jay Ashcroft doesn’t trust women to make decisions about their bodies. I’m worried Ashcroft would limit my access, my access to birth control. I’m worried Ashcroft wants to outlaw abortion, even in cases of rape or incest. I’m worried Ashcroft will be another Todd Akin. We need someone we can trust.

Jill Schupp: I’m Jill Schupp and unlike Jay Ashcroft I trust women to make these important decisions. I’ll always protect a woman’s right to choose and access to birth control because I trust Missouri women.

There are plenty more reasons to vote for Jill Schupp over the legacy in the 24th Senate District race. In the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Editorial: Care about Medicaid expansion? Vote for Jill Schupp

[….]

….We endorse Ms. Schupp to be the next state senator from the 24th District.

Her experience, her clear positions on Medicaid expansion and a variety of other issues, and the Senate’s desperate need for more ideological balance make Ms. Schupp the clear choice over political newcomer Jay Ashcroft, a Republican from unincorporated west St. Louis County.

Mr. Ashcroft is the son of former Missouri Gov. John Ashcroft, who went on to become a U.S. senator and U.S. attorney general before starting a Clayton law practice, where the younger Ashcroft also works. Mr. Ashcroft has never held political office, and his inexperience shows in his lack of clarity on key issues….

[….]

“…his inexperience shows in his lack of clarity on key issues…”

For right wingnut republicans that’s a feature, not a bug.

Neither can we.

That headline is from the substance of a Kansas City Star endorsement editorial.

Spark is mostly lacking in U.S. House races in western Missouri

10/24/2014 5:52 PM 10/24/2014 6:02 PM

[….]

4th [Congressional] District

Nate Irvin has virtually no money, but he has pluck, knowledge and a sincere drive to oust incumbent Vicky Hartzler from Congress. We can’t think of a single reason to recommend sending Hartzler back to Washington for a third term. Lately she has over-reacted on the Ebola virus, calling on restricting visas for West Africans, just as it seems she overshoots reason on many issues that come her way.

As he travels the district, Irvin says, he thinks he has tapped into a general discontent with Congress. In the farm bill debate, Hartzler voted to cut SNAP funding (food stamps), which, Irvin maintains, are important to district residents. Irvin also notes the blatant hypocrisy that Hartzler’s family farm has benefited from hundreds of thousands of dollars in subsidies under the nation’s farm legislation.

Irvin hopes to present values that stand in stark contrast to Hartzler’s brand of harsh conservatism. He favors significant campaign finance reform, to quash the influence of big money. He supports accessible higher education (Hartzler voted to limit Pell grant funding). His views tend to be socially liberal and libertarian; he favors gay marriage and decriminalization of marijuana.
