Roy Blunt doesn't want to be blamed for the Tea-Party government shutdown

2011 federal budget, Budget cuts, Government Shut down, missouri, Roy Blunt

I’m still fuming. I just called Senator Roy Blunt to let him know how insulted I am by an email I received from him today. In this ugly, dishonest little missive, Blunt attempts to preemptively weasel out from under the blame if his party’s intransigence results in a government shutdown.

After the lunatic fringe of the GOP refused to allow weak-kneed John Boehner to negotiate in good faith with the Senate and the White House, after they continuously pushed the goal post ever further in the direction of their ill-considered cuts, after they insisted on saddling the budget – a financial document – with narrow, unrelated, ideological riders about abortion and health care reform among other minority causes, Blunt dares to make the following statement:

I believe that a government shutdown is not the answer. But we have a responsibility to ensure Washington is living within its means, just like every family and job creator in Missouri and across America. On Monday night, House Republicans posted a bill that would keep the government open for a week after Friday’s deadline, while cutting $12 billion over the seven days. Yet Senate Democrats and President Obama failed to reach an agreement, raising the risk for our federal government to close at the end of this week.

Make no mistake – we’re in this predicament because Senate Democrats abdicated their duties and failed to pass a budget last year. The Senate Democrats’ unwillingness to come to the table to make real budget cuts is not a responsible solution, and we simply cannot continue spending money that we don’t have.

If Blunt really opposes a government shutdown, he knows what he can do – use his influence to get his party’s zealots to understand that the American people will not support government by tantrum. As for his claim that Senate Democrats have abdicated their duties – well, from my perspective (and that of the Washington Post’s David A. Fahrenthold and Amy Gardner), it’s the GOP cheering on a shutdown play. The President and the Democratic members of Senate seem to have been all too patient with the peanut gallery idiocy coming from the House of Representatives – and I bet lots of Americans will agree.

As for the ideologically inspired cuts that the Republicans are pushing (while refusing to raise taxes on obscenely rich Americans), they are not only directly harmful to working Americans, but, if enacted, they will, according to the respected Moody’s Investors Service, lead to a loss of up to 700,000 jobs, which will, in turn, threaten our nascent economic recovery. And to add insult to injury, nobody can argue with a straight face that cutting discretionary spending will have any effect on the deficit. If these folks really cared about deficit spending, they have an easy remedy. They could just allow the Bush tax cuts to expire – which, contrary to their claims, would do little harm to the economy – certainly not as much as the cuts they propose – and it would halve the deficit by 2021.

And guess what? Roy Blunt knows this – he may be corrupt, but I’m willing to bet he’s not stupid. And do you know what else? He clearly doesn’t care. It’s a safe bet that he’s not in government to serve the people who elected him, but to cater to the real powers in the U.S., the corporate/business lobby, and they, of course, just love where the GOP is taking us – low taxes for the wealthy and corporations and a cheap, desperate labor force that will make no waves.

I would suggest that if you are worried about the repercussions of a government shut-down, you too should phone Senator Blunt, the sooner the better. Let him know that if he really opposes a government shutdown, he should take a firm stand and face down the not-too-bright, ideologically driven, Tea Party crazies in his own party. It is ugly to blame the other guy when we all know where blame should rightly be apportioned.

Blunt’s Washington Phone Number is 1-202-224-5721. There is a very pleasant-voiced staff person taking calls – I hope to God he gets lots and lots  over the next few days.

Addendum:  Here’s Steve Benen on the Continuing Resolution that the House is now proposing, after declaring they never, never would allow anymore CR’s, and which Blunt’s email above refers to “a bill that would keep the government open for a week after Friday’s deadline, while cutting $12 billion over the seven days”:

Just yesterday, these same GOP lawmakers changed course. They now want a one-week, short-gap continuing resolution. If it were a sincere effort, Republicans could craft a “clean” CR, without extraneous measures or poison-pill provisions. Instead, this new plan would cut $12 billion in a week, but would also fund the Pentagon for the rest of the fiscal year.

In this transparent stunt, Republicans have begun calling this their “troop funding bill.” It has all the subtlety of a sledgehammer — the GOP has designed this to fail, so they can (a) argue Dems are to blame for the Republicans’ shutdown; and (b) accuse Dems of not supporting the troops

Benen’s got it right –  and ol’ Roy’s the proof – he couldn’t wait to get his exculpatory email out there so we’d know it was the bad ol’ Democrats fault.

If I shoot your kid, it's gonna be your fault.

Brian Nieves, Jim Lembke, missouri, Rob Schaaf, unemployment benefits, Will Kraus

That’s the rationale behind blaming Nixon if unemployed workers don’t get that extension to 99 weeks from the federal government. Four state senators–Lembke, Nieves, Schaaf, and Kraus–are filibustering to prevent Missouri from accepting free federal funds for the long-term jobless. If they succeed, we’ll be unique: the only state stupid enough to send its federal funds to some other state.

But the senators aren’t unreasonable. Oh no. If they can get Nixon to turn down other stimulus funds, they’ll give up the filibuster against jobless benefits. And if Nixon doesn’t kowtow, then:

“he’s more interested in paying for pet projects and pork than helping the families in Missouri that on Friday he said were his priority,” said Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Washington.

Republicans have a nasty habit of holding somebody’s kid at gunpoint and making ransom demands. That’s bad enough, but then they blame the kidnapping on the parents (or on Obama or on Nixon).

And they ain’t honest in other ways as well. When a reporter asked them about their assertions that these workers are “gaming the system”, Nieves got hot. (Well, that’s Nieves.) “Which one of us have EVER said anything remotely similar to that?” Lembke, who was standing next to Nieves at the podium didn’t say a word about this published quotation of his: “‘People need to get off their backsides and get a job.'” Furthermore, the reporter quoted Schaaf, 13 minutes earlier, saying that it’s outrageous to take money from one worker and give to another who should be working.

I’m past being surprised at wingnuts being wingnuts.

Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder (r), hotels, the taxpayer's dime: the ads write themselves

From the Democratic Governors Association:

Announcer: Welcome to the world of Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder. Where every fancy hotel has an open door, every audit is just a suggestion, and every dime comes from you, the taxpayer. It’s living luxury at your expense.

The odd and eccentric Kinder defines The Suite Life with three hundred and twenty-nine days spent in St. Louis hotels like the plush Chase Park Plaza, the Ritz-Carlton, and the Four Seasons at Lummiere Place Casino, known for its high stakes gambling.

But what sets this fancy politico apart from the pack is that he’s put it all on the public tab. The Post-Dispatch says he’s raked up thousands and thousands of dollars in hotel bills while in office.

Kinder’s been living it up. Sparkling chandeliers, plush spas, and well stocked mini bars. Expensive French restaurants, galas, society balls, and fancy fundraisers with his lobbyists friends. That’s Peter Kinder’s Suite Life. And it’s all on the taxpayer bill.

And Kinder refuses to apologize, saying:

Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder (r): Now I am not gonna apologize.

Announcer: Tell Peter Kinder we can’t afford to bankroll his Suite Life.

Visit Democratic Governors dot org to find out how you can help. Paid for by the Democratic Governors Association.

(hat tip to our good friends at Fired Up)

Ooh, that’s gonna leave another mark.

And to think, Missouri could have had Bekki Cook (D) instead.

Rep. Vicky Hartzler (r) wants to kill Medicare…

…and ration health care for seniors, and turn the elderly out of nursing homes.

@RepHartzler Rep. Vicky Hartzler

Paul Ryan’s unveiling our budget proposal for the next 10 years–cuts over $6 trillion and reforms our government. Smart, bold, proposal. 5 Apr

[emphasis added]

Others aren’t so enthusiastic:

Budget Office: GOP Medicare Plan Could Lead To Rationing

Remember all those allegations from Republicans that the Affordable Care Act would inevitably lead to health care rationing? It turns out the same might be true of the House GOP budget plan for Medicare.

At least that’s the conclusion of the Congressional Budget Office….

Posted at 06:59 PM ET, 04/06/2011

10 concluding thoughts on Ryan’s budget

By Ezra Klein

….The idea that conservatives believe the savings in Ryan’s plan are realistic while those in the Affordable Care Act aren’t boggles the mind. For one thing, Ryan includes the supposedly unrealistic savings from the Affordable Care Act; they can’t be realistic in Ryan’s budget but not realistic in the ACA. For another, the ACA’s savings are more modest, and the law has many, many more ways to attain them than simply saying “the government promises not to spend more than inflation, even if spending less means millions of seniors and disabled Americans will have no health care….”

The reviews keep coming in. Paul Ryan laid an egg. And Vicky Hartzler is content to clap louder.

Jamilah Nasheed, Karla May, Michael Brown, missouri, Penny Hubbard, vote on redistricting map

FiredUp! reports that four House Democrats–Jamilah Nasheed, Penny Hubbard, Karla May and Michael Brown–voted for the Republican redistricting plan. The first three of them are from St. Louis and Michael Brown is from KC. Hubbard defeated the Rev. James Morris last August for the seat in HD 58. Ain’t this a shame. Morris was an excellent Democrat.  Considering that these four just voted for a plan that would leave Democrats permanently condemned to hold two Congressional seats out of eight, they don’t even deserve a D after their names.

As Sean points out, there were three Republicans who voted against the plan because it was too partisan. It was pure partisan poppycock and these four should hang their heads in shame.

Jake Zimmerman, missouri, St. Louis County Assessor

I’ve already written about why Jake Zimmerman will make an excellent St. Louis County assessor. Yay, Jake!

So instead of putting up film from his victory party of him talking about his goals as assessor, I thought you’d like to hear something about the man himself. Because you know there’s more to him than just the politician.

Jake expressed that kind opinion of Chip Wood to me several weeks back. He’s sincere about it. And it tells me that he understands what filling a nonpartisan post means.

As for Megan, I wouldn’t know how sincere he is since he hasn’t discussed her with me. But I’m betting he meant every word.

24th State, Jake Zimmerman, missouri, Unions

24th State is making fun of the film I put up of Jake Zimmerman speaking Monday afternoon at the union rally at the CWA hall. And what Naevius contends is, well, it’s so contradictory and juvenile that it’s almost cute.

In a last minute effort to get the unions to pour money and effort into his election bid, Jake Zimmerman goes nuts screaming about Scott Walker and the Wisconsin unions.

He makes Jake sound pretty desperate, doesn’t he?–right before admitting that Jake’s going to win the race.

Zimmerman, with the help of hundreds of thousands of dollars, is a heavy favorite to win today.  In this clip, he exposes himself as the far left paid for union lawyer he always was.

Aside from the fact that the writer can’t decide whether Jake is a desperate beggar or a shoo in, he also assumes Jake is crooked. His rationale for that accusation is that Jake associates with, gasp, unions. Wait now. The right wingers on SCOTUS made it possible with the Citizens United decision for corporations to inundate elections with their money. But if and when any left wing guy actually gets ahead in the money race, rare though that may be, that makes him bought-and-paid-for. Because union money stinks.

Blink.

I rarely read right wingers. They’re too fact-challenged and juvenile. And this posting at 24th State is one more reminder of that truth.

It must be nice. Pile up that campaign indebtedness getting pasted in the election and someone shows up to bail you out.

The earnings taxes in Kansas City and St. Louis will continue to fund necessary city services because the voters overwhelmingly approved them in yesterday’s elections.

A reporter on one of the Kansas City television stations referred to the earnings tax as “controversial” this morning. You don’t get to say that and not sound like an idiot, not with the huge approval margins for the measure in this election.

It’s only controversial for old media because an anonymous someone(s) has deep enough pockets to make it so.

The sad thing? Kansas City and St. Louis will have to go through this exercise again in five years. Who profits? Just asking.

voting

I worked the election yesterday and was sadly disappointed in the turn-out.  We were busy enough with 1 or 2 voters coming in and the occasional 5 but no where near the numbers that should be coming out.

We had a photographer visit out polling place

http://ballwin-ellisville.patc…

As we told him and he say we were busy but not slammed.  In fact, at the end of the day we weer under 20%!  I went to vote during lunch time (near 1PM) and at my polling place was #26!

People complain that West County and the suburbs are red.  Where were they today?  I bet the average age of the people that showed to vote was almost 50.

What does it take to motivate people to do what they are expect, as citizens, to do?  Do these folks not see the rest of the world where people DIE and get tortured in order to get the right to vote?

Yes, it may have been a smallish election but those local positions often lead to bigger ones.  A butterfly flaps its wings…
