Europe didn’t send their best, sweetie – they emptied their prisons, their asylums, their poor houses HERE. Because the unique status of this nation isn’t about exclusion, it’s about inclusion – it’s about the EXACT proposition that all PEOPLE are equal before the law: that we the governed have a right to a say in our governance, that all people have the right to exist in freedom from tyranny, and to ensure that right, a system of laws and governance for ALL the People. Inherent in that proposition is change – the right to change as needed, as knowledge advances, as greater truths and facts become known, as PEOPLE change. And we DO – we HAVE. The world isn’t stuck in the 1850s or whatever magical timeframe you imagine. And if you’re too fragile, too dependent on whitewashed myths to exist in the real world, where we are all truly connected in ways we’re only beginning to understand, then please – retire to some retrograde little self-sufficient walled-off colony down in the hills and NEVER ever use any of the 21st century modern conveniences again. And FYI – GPS was developed by a Black woman.

As an adult, you should know that no one should need to apologize for who they are, but you SHOULD be willing and capable of making a sincere apology for actions that harm others, such as denying healthcare and easy access to food. Then they should endeavor sincerely to atone by helping those harmed to recover from the hurt done, and not repeating that harmful actions. By that definition you are not an adult, but you could, if you truly believed in the magnificent heritage that is our country, and realized that it was not one group of people that made it so, but many immigrants who came together with their many ideas, cultures and beliefs and worked hard to make it magnificent.

What are you most proud of? The slaughter of indigenous tribes? The slavery? The exploitation of workers to benefit the rich?
We can talk about the benefits of innovation, winning WWII, etc. However, we can’t talk about those without noting the harm of laissez-faire capitalism, Japanese concentration camps, or the atomic bomb. In other words, we will stand in the way of your attempt to white wash our history.

But what about this:

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”
It’s telling, Senator, that in your prepared remarks you said: “The Continental Army soldiers dying of frostbite at Valley Forge, the Pilgrims struggling to survive in the hard winter soil of Plymouth, the pioneers striking out from Missouri for the wild and dangerous frontier, the outnumbered Kentucky settlers repelling wave after wave of Indian war band attacks from behind their stockade walls—all of them would be astonished to hear that they were only fighting for a ‘proposition.’”
There is no mention of the Civil War, or, for that matter, World War II. Where are your sympathies in those conflicts?
Lincoln would have been astonished that a member of his own Republican Party would repudiate the notion that the United States is dedicated to a proposition.
The Americans who died for the Union in the Civil War, the Americans who died in World War II, would be astonished to learn that they were not fighting for a “proposition.”
It was the Confederates, and the Nazis, who fought for blood and soil, and who rejected the proposition that all people are created equal.
