GOP upset because Trump lets it all hang out

Donald Trump, Roy Blunt

Best headline today is on Greg Sargent’s WaPo column: “Republicans nominate dangerously insane person to lead America, then panic when he proves he’s dangerously insane.” I only have one quibble. Instead of saying “when he proves he’s dangerously insane,” a better choice would be “when he reveals he’s dangerously insane.”

As I argued yesterday in a post about Missouri GOP Senator Roy Blunt’s response to the Khan kerfluffle, it’s appearance not essence that Republicans value. Sargent is righteously indignant that Republicans now have their collective pants in a twist because everyone can now see what observant folks should have known all along:

… Trump has long harbored a range of traits and qualifications — or lack thereof — that already render him a very compromised candidate, both in a political sense and in the sense that Republicans should not have nominated him because he is a unique menace to the American experiment.

Trump’s pathologically abusive tendencies, his hair-trigger overreaction to criticism and slights both real and imagined, and his mental habit of sorting the world into the strong and the weak — the dominant and the submissive — render him temperamentally unfit for the presidency. He lacks basic knowledge of the world and doesn’t appear burdened by any curiosity about the complexities of foreign affairs or domestic policy. He is at worst a genuine bigot and at best a charlatan who has actively sought to stoke reactionary hostility to culturally and demographically evolving America. He is indifferent to the inner workings of the American system and instead promises authoritarian glory.

Trump’s not alone in his megalomania, bigotry and ignorance. These qualities have become a hallmark of GOP politics and as long as they’re managed properly, they don’t hinder the real goal of securing power on behalf of American business oligarchs. Folks like Blunt et al. will continue to endorse The Donald as long as he’s their only road to goodies like supreme court nominations that are essential to corporate interests. And their disapproval will be limited to tsk, tsking over his violations of political etiquette until it becomes clear that he’s not successfully hiding from the American electorate what the rightwing governing class knew all along.

As ol’ Roy implied in his advice to Trump to stop letting it all hang out in the case of Khazir Khan, we’re in a age that favors political fantasy – which good little GOP pols labor to supply while obeying the unwritten rules that govern political discourse. And they’ve got lots of media help. Fox news has proved that a considerable portion of the electorate will believe anything they’re told. In today’s environment there’s no excuse, they believe, for Trump to be hoist on the petard of his own predilections. But there he dangles, out in the open, for all to see.

Yesterday in the Democratic Party primary for Attorney General:

Jake Zimmerman Democratic 149,911 47.303%
Teresa Hensley Democratic 167,003 52.697%

Jake Zimmerman’s (D) concession:

Not the result we wanted

Dear friends,
This isn’t the note we were hoping to send you today. Yesterday’s election did not come out the way we had hoped, as we lost a close primary race.
We are incredibly disappointed. We put our heart and soul into this campaign, but came up short. Does it hurt? Sure.
But we are incredibly proud of the extraordinary commitment made by so many citizens across Missouri to champion this cause. You inspired us every day with your effort and your dedication. We are and will be eternally grateful to each of you for all that you did.
This morning, Gabriel woke up with the usual wide smile on his face. And while racing around on the carpet, he played one of his favorite games. He dropped to the floor, then jumped up into Mama’s lap, and squealed: “I fell down! I get up!” And then he giggled hysterically.
We aren’t doing so much giggling today, but we do agree with his sentiments. We fall down, we get up. We are sustained by the power of your kindness, your friendship, your support, and your good wishes.
The fight for fairness goes on. I congratulate Teresa Hensley on a hard-fought campaign, and I look forward to supporting her as our Democratic nominee to be the next Attorney General. She and others have important campaigns to win in November. We all still have work to do.
As for me, Jake, I’m excited to continue my work on behalf of the good people of St. Louis County. I am reminded even more vividly how grateful I am that they have put their trust in me. If you’re reading this, odds are good that you, too, have you put your trust in me. For that, above all else, we are both humbled and grateful.
With great appreciation,
Jake and Megan [Zimmerman]

That’s real class.

After the republican primary Josh Hawley is the republican nominee for Attorney General of Missouri:

Attorney General 3214 of 3214 Precincts Reported
Josh Hawley Republican 415,300 64.214%
Kurt Schaefer Republican 231,444 35.786%
Party Total: 646,744

[emphasis added]

Not nice people, by their nasty campaign ads, and not particularly well qualified, either. It’s what spending a lot of money does and doesn’t get you in the republican primary. And there will be plenty more money where that came from.

Catherine Hanaway and GOP gender bias

2016 election, 2016 GOP primary, Catherine Hanaway, Gender bias

First let me say that I find all the GOP nominees for Governor equally repellent and can only hope that our better angels prevail and Missourians refuse to give opportunistic Eric Greitens his first step up the political ladder (governorship, no less) in November. That said, I find the election returns very telling for another reason: Catherine Hanaway’s last place finish in the gubernatorial primary.

If I had to rank the GOP candidates in terms of qualifications (which includes their ability to convey some iota of intelligence), I would put Hanaway and then Greitens at the top of the list, followed by bumbling Brunner, and, coming in last, poor Peter Kinder. Yet which of these sterling candidates did Missouri Republicans kick to last place? The very highly qualified woman, of course, Catherine Hanaway.

Hanaway was so superior to her competitors that even the St. Louis Post-Dispatch gave her their endorsement for the primary, arguing that only she had “shown herself by word and deed to be worthy of the state’s top post.” (Although, it’s always possible, given the new GOP tribalism, that an endorsement from a putatively liberal newspaper actually hurt her.) She had big money support too, most notably millions from would-be GOP kingmaker, Rex Sinquefield. Yet even the low-budget doofus, Kinder, beat her by 5,148 votes (141,498 to 136,350).

So do you think gender shouldn’t be a consideration when we evaluate support for other female candidates in this year’s general election, Hillary Clinton for sure, but also, here in Missouri, political candidates like Teresa Hensley who won the Democratic nomination for Attorney General? Just saying … if it walks like a duck …

You ain’t seen nothin’ yet

Think of all that money in the republican primary.

Yes, think of all that money in the general election.

So is it worse to have a black soul or to be soulless?

Donald Trump, Election 2016, Khizr Khan, Roy Blunt

Recently, in response to Donald Trump’s angry sputtering about Khizr Khan’s remarks at the Democratic Nominating Convention, Khan, father of a fallen soldier, said that Trump “is a black soul.” Given that Trump, who seemed to feel an urgent need to respond, chose to level vicious, personal attacks against Khan and his wife, both grieving the death of their son, rather than calmly try to refute their concerns about his apparent lack of basic American values, Khan’s response seems reasonably apt. Trump’s Khan-inspired vitriol has been almost universally condemned – even leading one Republican congressman to declare that Trump is a “national embarrassment” and that he will switch his vote to Hillary Clinton.

All of which leads us to the response of our own Republican Senator, Roy Blunt. Blunt, who used student deferments to sit out the Vietnam War, conceded that war is hard on parents, recalling “how much I worried about my son Matt during his years of active duty.” He quickly shifted, however, to the question of how best to win political contests, adding that “my advice to Donald Trump has been and will continue to be to focus on jobs and national security and stop responding to every criticism, whether it’s from a grieving family or Hillary Clinton.” And the Devil take the hindmost.

The whole Trumpalooza has been hard on Blunt, who has been reduced to the metaphorical equivalent of mumbling softly into corners lest folks really hear his responses to the Trump phenomena. From the beginning he has tried to waffle while avoiding the appearance of waffling. He gave Trump a weak endorsement, but didn’t attend the conference and has otherwise tried to keep his head down. He doesn’t want to offend the rabid out-state Trumpkins, but knows that, given his tightening race against Democrat Jason Kander, neither can he offend the more liberal, urban Missourians who are everyday more and more appalled by the Trump spectacle.

It’s important to note that Blunt in no way repudiated his earlier endorsement of Trump or explicitly condemned Trump’s ugly display; instead, he murmured a few conciliatory cliches and then got down to the political money-man’s meat-and-potatoes, how to pull the wool over the public’s eyes. Trump may be a black soul, but at least he is what he is openly, unlike Blunt, a manipulative operator who managed to translate a series of inhumane insults into a question of political decorum.

Trump may be a “black soul,” but, by the same measure, shouldn’t we consider a man to be utterly soulless who confronts that black soul without revulsion but instead with an eye to his own benefit.

So, Donald Trump has been complaining about the schedule for the presidential debates.

Six of one, half dozen of the other. There’d be no difference in the final result.

Today at the Missouri Ethics Commission for Bev Randles’ (r) 2016 primary campaign for Lieutenant Governor, again, from a Rex Sinquefield supported PAC:

C141581 07/31/2016 MISSOURIANS FOR RANDLES Missouri Club for Growth PAC PO Box 669 Grover MO 63040 7/30/2016 $25,000.00

You know, not too long ago a $25,000.00 contribution to a statewide campaign would have been considered outrageous. How far we’ve come.
