Cass County Democrats held their annual Back to Blue Dinner in Belton on Saturday evening. As is their custom, they had a full slate of candidates and guests speaking to the crowd. A sample:

Jim White, the Democratic Party candidate in the 4th Congressional District.

Jim White (D): …And this is what I’m running on, investing in our citizens. We want to invest in their economic well-being. Fifteen bucks an hour and a union. A living wage for all workers. [applause, cheers] At the poverty level today there is only one household that can work for minimum wage and even reach the poverty level – and that’s a household with a single person and only if they work forty hours a week, fifty-two weeks a year, which, of course, they’re not gonna get to do. Uh, we all know that the path to the middle class has always been led by organized labor….

Patty Johnson, former Democratic Party legislative candidate.

Patty Johnson (D): ….We’re here because we care about the Democratic Party and because we care about Democratic principles. And how many of you here tonight have worked on someone’s campaign, made phone calls, walked door to door, or did parades? So you all believe, too.  And I’m just here to remind you tonight how important your work is and to thank you all so much for all that you’ve done for all of us who’ve run for office and how much we still need for you to do.  Jim [White] is going to need all your help. And I know we have a candidate for Attorney General  here – and he’s going to need your help. So I’m asking you here tonight to remember why you’re here. The reason that you’re a Democratic is because you care about people, because you want everyone to have the same opportunities that we had growing up. You want your children to have an education, you want good jobs for them when they get out of school, and you all, we all want to have a decent retirement… [….] …We need your hard work.  We need you to keep going. And I think that it’s already been referenced that you all realize there’s an election coming up in November of twenty-sixteen. The work for that election starts here tonight. You all have done something toward that because you’ve contributed money for tables and advertising and we appreciate that because that money goes to help us to help our candidates. And here in Cass County, God knows, we need a lot of help. [laughter] And I also want to recognize Janet Burlingame, too. And I want to recognize her for her courage and integrity in running her race for County Clerk and remaining a Democrat and staying true to her principles. For her [applause]…because that’s what makes us different than Republicans, we actually believe in something. We actually work towards those things we believe in.  And I wanted to leave you all with a small visual tonight. We are surrounded by Republican darkness. And we can sit here and curse the darkness or we can light a candle. I choose to light a candle. And I hope you’ll leave here tonight with me and take that light out to the people who are sitting still in the darkness and who need our help and guidance to come back to light and the Democratic principles we believe in.  So, thank you all so much for being here. [applause]….

Senator Scott Sifton,  a Democratic Party candidate for Attorney General in 2016.

Senator Scott Sifton (D): ….And I, I gotta tell you, I know that the previous speaker was asked, uh, to keep her remarks brief. I was thinking of maybe showing you what a Senate filibuster is like, but I, I’m actually saving it for when the “right to work” bill comes to the floor of the Senate. [applause, cheers] There is only one way that bill is gonna come to a vote in the Senate and that’s if the Republicans exercise the nuclear option. I am proud to have been the last Democrat standing against the seventy-two hour waiting period, which was the last time the Republicans exercised the nuclear option. [applause] And there is no way in the world they will get me to sit down voluntarily when “right to work” comes to the floor. I will debate it all night long. [applause]….

Former Senator Wes Shoemyer (D):  ….I don’t think that an insurance company that runs around calling their name Farm Bureau represents nobody in the agriculture world. [applause] [….]

….There are some things that really torque me about, uh, what Republicans have claimed and claimed to be….I recall when I was in Jeff City there was a piece of legislation that came up and, for, drug testing for TANF recipients. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Think about it. Now this was the only folks in the whole State of Missouri that got a check signed by the state treasury or federal treasury that we thought ought to pee in a cup to get their money. Think about it. I mean, I’ve had, the day I pee in my cup to get my farm payment probably it would be a good time we could do it for the folks on TANF, wouldn’t it?  When Clark [inaudible] wants to pee in a cup for his forty million on his stadium [inaudible} I’ll pee in a cup, too. [applause, cheers]….

Former Senator Wes Shoemyer (D).

Daily Kos, Kansas City, missouri

Yesterday Daily Kos held a day long event for activists and Daily Kos participants at the Alamo Drafthouse in Kansas City. We set up shop at 7:30 a.m. thanks to the hospitality of the event organizers and Daily Kos.

Around one hundred forty individuals attend, partaking in presentations and question and answer sessions. A number of the Daily Kos editorial team presented, including Markos Moulitsas, founder of Daily Kos; Neeta Lind, Director of Community Building at Daily Kos; Chris Reeves with Reuben Eckels; David Nir, Political Director at Daily Kos; Joan McCarter, Senior Political Writer at Daily Kos; Monique Teal and Ferguson Township (Missouri) Committeewoman Patricia Bynes; among others.

[….]

Reuben Eckles: …I think they [Democrats] vote when they know they have hope. And they know that, and they know that they have something to vote for.  [applause]  [inaudible] [….] I think we, we are a people, progressives are people who vote when there are, there are, when their, their issues are, and the candidates will stand up. We have a lot of folk who don’t stand up for anything. It seems like we’re, we’re scared now. And, and, so [voice: “Preach it.”] when we stand up and we say what we are for, we stand up and we, we don’t back off and back, back away from it, I think we’ll, we’ll get out and vote. And so, and so, we can’t, we can’t look like, you know, we say we’re progressives and then we move further and further to the right so that we can bring, you know, not piss folk off. [applause] I’m gonna tell you something. I’m a Democrat, but one of the things they did in Wichita, Kansas [….] was going first in, in, if you went into the Democratic Party, its office, they didn’t have Barrack Obama’s picture up because they didn’t want to piss off moderate Republicans. [voice: “Yep.”] Hell, we can’t do that. Let’s stand for what we stand for. [applause] [inaudible] And there are more folks out there, there are more folks with us then are against us

[….]

[….]

David Nir, Political Director, Daily Kos: ….Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson [R], he represents, uh, a very swingy state, but, I think that he thinks he represents Utah [laughter] because he votes as conservatively as you realistically can in the Senate. And dumb stuff comes out of his mouth all the time. It’s really amazing. Just the other day he had a comment that, uh, he thought that the reason why students were taking longer to finish college, uh, is because they’re having too much fun partying. Uh, and, uh, he said, you know,  well I put myself through school, uh, you know, working jobs or whatever, never mind the fact that, uh, tuition has spiked, the minimum wage has stagnated, and it’s no longer possible for many students to put themselves through college in four years the way Ron Johnson did.

[….]

Joan McCarter, Senior Political Writer, Daily Kos.

[….]

Joan McCarter, Senior Political Writer, Daily Kos: …Social Security. We’re not there yet. But, last month forty-two senators, forty-two Democrats, voted for a budget resolution, it’s non-binding, it’s advisory, but voted for a budget resolution that would expand Social Security.  [applause]  Forty-two.  Joe Manchin, Joe Manchin was one of the lead co-sponsors. And actually, we found out it would have been forty-three Democrats because Barbara Mikulski wasn’t there for that vote, but she signed on later, saying, okay, I’m gonna do this.

[….]

Markos Moulitsas, founder, Daily Kos.

[….]

Markos Moulitsas, founder, Daily Kos: …Hillary’s gonna be the next President of the United States. [voice: “Yes, she is.”] [applause] It is, a, I mean, it’s close to a fact as you can get in politics, I mean, without, you know, major  illness or, um. The, Hillary, the, the draft [Elizabeth] Warren stuff is absolutely patently ridiculous, not just because she said no and people don’t want to take no as no. Um, but, uh, it, I know, like, Warren is probably one of three politicians in the entire country that I consider an actual friend. So I know her, uh, fairly well and I, I know she’s not running. It’s never been an issue. She’s not gonna run. Um, but the fact is it actually endangers her agenda by pushing her. She’s very effective in the Senate. Anything she does now is basically instant virality. Like people love her. It’s a platform like no other….

[….]

…When you look at Hillary Clinton’s numbers among African Americans and Latinos she is off the charts. So, that there, you know, so, make, mostly, it’s [inaudible] activist mostly white base that’s really pushing for a candidate that doesn’t want to run against a candidate that’s already been embraced  by the party…

[….]

…As we as a ideology become ascendant, and I think liberalism is on the ascendancy right now. Um, the poll, the polls are showing that the number of liberals is growing, uh, for the first time in decades. Like the war is no longer, like I’m proud to say I’m a liberal and, and you’re gonne see people who are gonna be pretend lib, before they like couldn’t run away far enough, right. The fact that they’re now pretending to be liberal is actually progress [laughter]. As frustrating as it might be, that is actually progress. Uh, so, uh, I would take it as a compliment and then work on, on making distinctions. You know, it actually gets easier for a lot of these corporatist types. I mean the DLC’s a dead organization. But these corporate types will find ways to get their money into their candidates. Is, now that the social issues, we’ve won the social wars, you know, cultural wars  it’s actually, it’s easier for them to say, I’m for gay marriage, um, pro choice, therefore, I’m perfectly liberal. And, and a lot of people, we’ve been conditioned that the culture wars are the fault lines between the good and the bad. That it makes it easy for them to mask their economic agenda. So, as we, as a party I see moving towards this, we as a party becoming more effective at making, uh, economic issues part of the popular debate, whether it’s the fifteen dollar minimum wage or whether it’s, uh, the Koch brothers and everything they do, or. And, so, I think what’s sort, it’s almost like, okay, you’re, you’re good on the social issues, great for you, everybody’s good on that now. So, now , how are you on fif, fifteen dollars, how are you on universal pre-K, how are you on all these other things? And, uh, and that’s gonna be hopefully the new fault lines…

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) on the confirmation of Loretta Lynch as Attorney General

“….We have a new test. You must disagree with the president who nominates you. Let me say that again because we love common sense in Missouri and this defies common sense. You must vote against a nominee for the cabinet of the duly elected President of the United States because she agrees with the duly President of the United States…..”

Senator Claire McCaskill (D), yesterday, on the floor of the United States Senate:

The transcript:

Senator Claire McCaskill (D): Mister President, uh, briefly, this should be, um, a happy day for America. This should be a day that is circled in the calendar as another day as the, as the President of the Senate knows that this is about the American dream. This woman is the embodiment of the American dream in action. We should be celebrating her confirmation to the most important law enforcement position in the United states of America.

So why am I not happy? I am sad. I am depressed. Because what we are gonna witness in a few minutes is base politics at its ugliest. Doesn’t get any uglier than this. Because what we are saying today, what my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are saying today, it doesn’t matter if you’re qualified. It doesn’t matter if you’re one of the most qualified nominees for Attorney General in the history of our country. That makes no difference. We have a new test. You must disagree with the president who nominates you. Let me say that again because we love common sense in Missouri and this defies common sense. You must vote against a nominee for the cabinet of the duly elected President of the United States because she agrees with the duly President of the United States.

think of the consequences of that vote. Think what that means to the future of advise and consent in this Senate if we all adopt this base politics play to the cheap seat I can’t get elected President unless I’m against Loretta Lynch. If we all adopt that in the future how is any president elected in this country going to assemble a cabinet? Because it will be incumbent on all of us to be against cabinet members who have the nerve to agree with the president who has selected them for his team.

It is beyond depressing. It’s disgusting. She is so qualified, she has worked so hard all her life. She is a prosecutor’s prosecutor. She’s prosecuted more terrorists than almost anybody on the face of the planet. And the notion that this has occurred because she agrees with the man who selected her – I think everyone needs to understand what that means for the future if all of us embrace that kind of base politics in these decisions.

It is not a happy day. It is a very sad day. I am proud of who Loretta Lynch is. I am proud that she will be Attorney General of this country. I am sad that it will be such a close vote.

Thank you, Mr. President.

That’s our Claire.

The release from Senator McCaskill’s office:

McCaskill Highlights ‘depressing…base politics’ of Colleagues Opposing President’s Attorney General Nominee Because the Nominee Agrees With the President

During Senate floor speech, Senator blasts unprecedented opposition to first Attorney General nominee who’s ever prosecuted terrorists

Thursday, April 23, 2015

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill took to the Senate floor today and called out her Republican colleagues for their unprecedented opposition to Loretta Lynch’s 166 day-long nomination for the post of U.S. Attorney General.

Lynch-who has had to wait more than twice as long as the previous seven Attorneys General combined for a confirmation vote-will be the first Attorney General to have previously prosecuted terrorists.

[….]

“We should be celebrating her confirmation to the most important law enforcement position in the United States of America,” McCaskill said. “So why am I not happy? I am sad. I am depressed. Because what we are going to witness in a few minutes is base politics at its ugliest. Doesn’t get any uglier than this. Because what we are seeing today, what my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are saying today, is it doesn’t matter if you’re qualified. It doesn’t matter if you are one of the most qualified nominees for Attorney General in the history of our country. That makes no difference. We have a new test. You must disagree with the President who nominates you…we love common sense in Missouri and this defies common sense.”

When Lynch was nominated to be the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York in 2000, her nomination was approved by the Republican-led Judiciary Committee and confirmed unanimously by the Republican-led Senate. In 2010, when she was re-nominated to this post, Lynch was again approved by the Judiciary Committee and confirmed unanimously by the full Senate.

Lynch’s nomination today was narrowly approved by the Senate by a vote of 56-43, and she will replace Eric Holder as Attorney General.

###

“….Think what that means to the future of advise and consent in this Senate if we all adopt this base politics play to the cheap seat I can’t get elected President unless I’m against Loretta Lynch. If we all adopt that in the future how is any president elected in this country going to assemble a cabinet….?”

Uh, should we ask Senator Roy Blunt (r)?
