Our question has been asked and answered.

And, that was mighty nice of the former U.S. Representative.

Todd Akin, the republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, held several campaign rallies with supporters across the Kansas City metro area yesterday. At the rally held at a park in Raymore yesterday evening (r) there were equal numbers of protesters and attendees at the rally (approximately fifty each, as related by a protester via Facebook). We received several photos from an individual who attended the protest:

That would explain the “Fair Tax” yard signs.

corruption, ethics legislation, Lobbyists, missouri, Steve Tilley, Tim Jones

Today’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch quotes the new Missouri House Speaker, birther Tim Jones, about why he sees no need for ethics legislation to guide Missouri lawmakers:

I don’t see this culture of corruption in Jefferson City. There’s too many eyes, ears and camera phones to do anything wrong anymore.

Jones is taking over as Speaker from former Rep. Steve Tilley a few months early. The see-no-evil Jones might profit from a serious consideration of Mr. Tilley’s behavior, which earned a few words from the Post-Dispatch in an editorial yesterday on the topic of – you guessed it – ethical lapses:

Less than a month ago, Mr. Tilley, formerly a Republican state representative from Perryville, quit his office so that he could openly begin accepting cash from his former colleagues as a political consultant. Mr. Tilley, though, isn’t content to give election advice from his new Chesterfield-based office.

He’s also going to lobby for corporate clients, following the ethically questionable path established by Republican strategist David Barklage. See, if you can control some access to corporate dollars, help set public policy by writing and lobbying for bills, and direct a cadre of elected representatives by being their chief political adviser, well, let’s just say there’s money to be made.

But as the Post-Dispatch notes, that’s only the half of it:

Were Mr. Tilley simply entering the lobbying revolving door, and following the example set by many lawmakers in both parties before him, that wouldn’t be much of a story. It’s old hat in Missouri, and until a new batch of lawmakers decide to join most other states and Congress and implement a one- or two-year moratorium on lawmakers doing precisely what Mr. Tilley is doing, then Missouri’s ethical free zone is their fault.

On the other hand, if any of the new lawmakers coming into office in January are worried about this revolving door, we suggest they check Mr. Tilley’s campaign finance records, as the Post-Dispatch’s Virginia Young did last week.

Ms. Young found an interesting flow of money from Mr. Tilley’s million-dollar campaign account, which Missouri law allows him to keep as long as he pretends he’s running for future office.

During the recent election cycle, Mr. Tilley gave campaign donations to a number of politicians.

At least three of those politicians, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, Rep. Rick Stream, R-Kirkwood, and Sen. Mike Parson, R-Bolivar, turned around and paid Mr. Tilley’s new political consulting firm, Strategic Capitol Consulting, fees for various advice or services.

One doesn’t have to be a cynic to follow the money and see it for what it is. Mr. Tilley has found a way to use his campaign cash to fund the start-up of his new business.

Of course, to Mr. Jones this is probably all hunky-dory since it doesn’t provide any substantive gist for the eyes, ears and camera phones in Jefferson City. However, to those of us who lack that conservative “fire” that Mr. Jones alludes to in the Post-Dispatch article when describing himself and his pursuit of right-wing ideals, it sounds like a money-laundering scheme that would do the Columbian cartel proud.

The Post-Dispatch article tells us that Jones and his family gather regularly for a “four-wheel-drive competition thrugh mud pits and obstacle courses,” dubbed the “Jones Mudfest.” Given Mr. Jones beliefs about what constitutes corruption, it’s likely we’ll soon be having another type of Jones Mudfest in Jefferson City.

Israeli Sharpens Call for United States to Set Iran Trigger

By DAVID E. SANGER and ISABEL KERSHNER

Published: September 11, 2012

WASHINGTON – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel inserted himself into the most contentious foreign policy issue of the American presidential campaign on Tuesday, criticizing the Obama administration for refusing to set clear “red lines” on Iran’s nuclear progress that would prompt the United States to undertake a military strike….

Oh, it’s really just neoconservative spin:

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release

September 11, 2012

Readout of the President’s Call with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu

President Obama spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu for an hour tonight as a part of their ongoing consultations. The two leaders discussed the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program, and our close cooperation on Iran and other security issues. President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed that they are united in their determination to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and agreed to continue their close consultations going forward. Contrary to reports in the press, there was never a request for Prime Minister Netanyahu to meet with President Obama in Washington, nor was a request for a meeting ever denied.

I know, it’s shocking that a right wingnut republican backbencher regurgitates neoconservative blather.

Roy Blunt follows Mitt Romney over the cliff

free speech, Libyan embassy attack, missouri, Mitt Romney, Roy Blunt

Roy Blunt is evidently so besotted with GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney that he feels bound to echo Romney’s disgusting response to the tragedy at the Libyan embassy. Or maybe it’s just that since Jim DeMint and Bobby Jindal have put themselves out there for the Mittster, Roy thinks it’s safe to venture out to beat the bushes for Mitt too. According to a report at the St. Louis NPR Website:

Blunt echoed many of Romney’s complaints. “Apologizing for America is not the way you’re going to advance your cause, particularly in the Middle East,” he said.  Blunt also criticized the President for taking too long to bolster security at embassies.  “Seems late to me,” Blunt said. “But better late than never, I suppose.”

Of course nobody is apologizing for America. That’s just one more GOP fiction trotted out to whet the appetites of their Obama-hating base. Glenn Kessler, the Washington Post  fact-checker demolished that allegation, and, in spite of the allergic reaction to facts and fact-checkers evinced by the Romney campaign and, now, Roy Blunt, some of us still care about reality.

As a matter of fact, if folks like Blunt weren’t so determined to milk votes out of every bigot able to spell his own name, they might have been a little more careful over the past few years about statements that help to legitimate the rage of anti-Muslim nativists, who, like belligerent drunks in a bar, seem determined to provoke violent Islamic fundamentalists – with nary a thought about our soldiers and diplomatic personnel serving in Islamic countries. As for the free speech issues Romney et al. seem to be hinting at, I think Andrew Sullivan put it very succinctly:

I’m a free speech absolutist – but I’m not an anti-religion absolutist. I think a little respect for religions we don’t share is something most Americans would think is precisely an American value. I can see why there should have been a defense of the free speech of Terry Jones in that tweet in principle – and there is: “the universal right of free speech.” Does Romney think the administration should have defended the film itself? Does Romney?

Does Roy Blunt? The real pièce de résistance though, is Blunt’s ham-handed effort to defend Mitt Romney’s lunatic attack on the President:

When asked if he was disappointed that this tragedy has become a political issue, Senator Blunt responded. “Of course they (the presidential candidates) responded to it. If they hadn’t responded to it, they’d both be roundly criticized for having nothing to say about it.”

Evidently Blunt can’t distinguish between responding to a tragedy, which is what President Obama calmly, competently did, and attempting to make political hay out of a disaster – and potentially endangering even more Americans in diplomatic posts.

Welcome to Redneckistan!

Congratulations, Missouri women! Your state legislature just relieved your frail and feeble selves of making those pesky and confusing decisions about contraception and your reproductive health and put that onerous burden where it belongs — on the big, stong, manly shoulders of your employers.

Existing law already allowed employers to opt for policies that didn’t pay for contraception, sterilization or abortion services if offering them would violate the religious beliefs of the employer. This law goes one (unconstitutional?) step further and gives the insurance companies the right to deny contraception coverage even if the employee wants it and is willing to pay for it.

The bill’s sponsor, Republican Sen. John Lamping of Ladue, said the governor’s argument is not valid. Current law is not being properly enforced, he said, and a recent mandate from the Obama administration that health insurance plans must cover contraception will force employers to choose between “their religiously held beliefs and this mandate.”

“The mandate will lead to employers deciding they can no longer offer certain benefits to their employees,” he said.

Critics argued that the bill will put Missouri insurance companies on a collision course with lawsuits by forcing them to choose between violating state or federal law. But more importantly, they contend, it could limit a woman’s access to birth control.

“Women depend on family planning and birth control access to plan their families, which determines their economic status,” said state Rep. Stacey Newman, a Richmond Heights Democrat. She later added: “Women are listening, and they are watching what we do here today.”

State Rep. Sandy Crawford, a Buffalo Republican and the bill’s House sponsor, said there is nothing in the bill that would prevent a woman from obtaining birth control. They would just have to pay for it themselves, she said.

“This bill is about protecting our religious liberties,” she said. “This bill does not prohibit the sale or purchase of contraception.”

But making it more difficult to access birth control could put many woman and families in a difficult fiscal position over how to pay for something that is considered basic health care, Newman said.

In urging her colleagues to support the governor’s veto, state Rep. Jamilah Nasheed, a St. Louis Democrat, said anyone who opposes abortion should support making contraception more readily available to woman.

“If you are pro-life, be pro-life. That’s OK,” she said. “But tell the truth. Contraception is not the same as abortion. In fact, contraception prevents abortion and unwanted children.”

Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, called the legislation a complete waste of time. The true motivation behind the bill, she said, was politics.

“Only reason this is happening is because this is an election year,” she said. “Under current law, if an employer wants to opt out of contraceptive coverage they can. This bill is meaningless.”

I dunno, Senator Justus…I wouldn’t call it entirely meaningless, because I suspect more than a few women are pissed off enough over this to invest some time and shoeleather in walking and canvassing and phone banking. For Democrats.

Libyan embassy, missouri, Mitt Romney

By now you’ve probably read about how Mitt Romney came out swinging at the President after the murder of staff at our Libyan embassy, hoping to land a punch and reinforce his laugable “apology tour” meme, no matter how harmful his comments might prove to be to American diplomats in the field. I’d thought that after Romney’s descent into welfare-queen, race-baiting he could go no lower. I was wrong. Michael Tomasky and Andrew Sullivan, representing the left and (the intelligent) right respectively, sum it up:

Some of you write, oh Tomasky can be dismissed because he just wants Obama to be reelected. That I do, for a host of reasons, but pretty high on my list is my belief, which I’ve held since 2007 and with redoubled passion since watching him more closely last year, that Mitt Romney is characterless and unprincipled and just can’t be the president. The last 16 hours have played out almost as if he sat down after dinner and said to Ann, “Now, how can I prove Mike Tomasky right?”

Andrew’s conclusion is mine:

These people are simply unfit for the responsibility of running the United States. The knee-jerk judgments, based on ideology not reality; the inability to back down when you have said something obviously wrong; and the attempt to argue that the president of the US actually sympathized with those who murdered his own ambassador in Benghazi: these are disqualifying instincts for someone hoping to be the president of the US. Disqualifying.

Sullivan’s post outlines the events and persuasively makes the case for the outrage about Romney’s behavior that is expressed above. I highly recommend it.

The whole thing made me so angry that I went to the Romney campaign Website and left a comment, telling the presidential hopeful how disgraceful I thought his behavior was. Probably a wasted gesture, but it made me feel lots better.

UPDATE: President Obama shows us how its done when you’re the real deal:

“There’s a broader lesson to be learned here: Governor Romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later and as president one of the things I’ve learned is you can’t do that,” Obama told CBS News on Wednesday.”It’s important for you to make sure that the statements that you make are backed up by the facts and that you’ve thought through the ramifications before you make them.”

A new ad from Obama/Biden 2012, running in Iowa, Nevada, Virginia, and Ohio:

President Obama: I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message.

Narrator: Mitt Romney, he won’t reveal what’s in his taxes and he won’t tell you what he’d do to yours. To pay for huge new tax breaks for millionaires like him…

[The Wall Street Journal, 8/1/12, Study: Romney’s Tax Plan Hits Middle Class]

… Romney would have to raise taxes on the middle class. Two thousand dollars for a family with children…

[“taxpayers with children who make less than $200,000 would pay, on average, $2,000 more in taxes”]

…says a non-partisan report. You could lose the deduction for your home mortgage, college tuition, health care.

How much would you pay? Romney just won’t say.

Uh, yep.
