Bridge to Nowhere, Infrastructure bill, job creation, jobs bill, missouri, Roy Blunt

Today on the Website for the Campaign for America’s Future, Bill Scher published a list of 25 current senators who voted for the boondoggle-rich “Bridge to Nowhere” transportation bill in 2005  while voting against President Obama’s much less expensive infrastructure bill last week. In other words, they had no problem voting for frivolous spending six years ago, but now they can’t bring themselves to vote to respond to pressing infrastructure needs while creating desperately needed jobs in the process.

You’ll not be surprised to learn that all but two of these humbugs, Nebraska’s Ben Nelson and Connecticut’s Joe Lieberman (who else, right?), are Republicans. Further, as Steve Benen notes, there are some malefactors who deserve the opprobrium due to this select group, but escape due to a technicality:

… some House members – Missouri’s Roy Blunt, for example – voted for the 2005 bill as House members, and have since been promoted to the Senate.

So I guess we can count Roy Blunt among the lawmakers that Scher designates as “champions of hypocrisy … the people who are standing in the way.”

Previously: Campaign Finance: bad timing (November 6, 2011)

After noting Representative Mike McGhee’s (r) report of a $7,500.00 campaign contribution last week toward his senate campaign from Sam Howard Regional Group, Imagine Schools, Inc. we thought we’d take a look at other contributions over the years associated with Imagine Schools. At the Missouri Ethics Commission, from 2010:

C071342 CITIZENS FOR TISHAURA O JONES Imagine Schools-Missouri Region 1509 Washington Ave., #501 St. Louis, MO 63103 3/12/2010 $300.00

C051254 MCGHEE FOR SENATE Imagine Schools-Missouri Region 1509 Washington Ave., Ste. #501 St. Louis, MO 63103 3/27/2010 $5,000.00

C000932 REPUBLICAN CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF ST LOUIS COUNTY Imagine Schools 1509 Washington Ave Suite 50 St. Louis, MO 63103 05/01/2010 $250.00

C071357 CITIZENS FOR DIECKHAUS Imagine Schools – Missouri Region 1509 Washington Avenue, Suite 501 St. Louis, MO 63103 Corporation 09/09/2010 $250.00

[emphasis added]

Representative Mike McGhee (r) was, again, the recipient of big bucks in 2010.

Representative Scott Dieckhaus (r), that paragon of support for teachers and public education? Really?

In 2009:

C051087 CITIZENS FOR TIMOTHY W JONES Imagine Schools Missouri Regional 1509 Washington Ave, Suite 501 St. Louis, MO 63103 9/23/2009 $500.00

[emphasis added]

In 2008:

C051254 MCGHEE FOR SENATE Yes Imagine Schools Missouri Regional 1509 Washington Ave., Suite 501 St. Louis, MO 63103 8/16/2008 $325.00

[emphasis added]

In 2007:

C061656 COMMITTEE TO ELECT REED IMAGINE SCHOOLS, INC 1005 N. GLOBE ROAD, SUITE 610 ARLINGTON, VA 22201 01/17/2007 $1,275.00

C061656 COMMITTEE TO ELECT REED IMAGINE SCHOOLS 706 N JEFFERSON ST. LOUIS, MO. 63103 06/11/2007 $1,000.00

[emphasis added]

Why did Representative Mike McGhee become a favorite? Just asking.

That's a good question: settlements and taxes

harrassment, Herman Cain, taxes

From commenter g at Political Animal on the Herman Cain (r) story:

…On a side note – I am amused at the typical wingnut response to this fact, which is usually, “Oh, that doesn’t mean anything, payouts like this are the cost of doing business.”

If paying out $45,000 with no good reason other than to to make someone go away is no big deal, then why is adding a small percentage tax increase to personal incomes over $1 million such an earth-shaking, job-killing horror?

That’s a really good question.

Last week at the Missouri Ethics Commission:

C051254 11/03/2011 MCGHEE FOR SENATE Sam Howard Regional Group, Imagine Schools, Inc. 107 Concord Street Holliston MA 01746 11/3/2011 $7,500.00

On the same day in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Imagine Schools places top executive on leave

BY ELISA CROUCH […] Posted: Thursday, November 3, 2011 12:06 am

….The company has placed Sam Howard, executive vice president, on administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation. Imagine spokeswoman Lori Waters said. The Post-Dispatch reported that a contracting firm that renovated Imagine school buildings had made $32,000 in payments to a “Sam Howard.” Howard had no explanation for the payments.

The Missouri Public Charter School Association is now calling for an investigation of the schools by the state auditor….

Well, that’s interesting.

URGENT:  We need you Thurs., Nov. 10 at 10 am in St. Charles for a Mo Senate Hearing on Health Insurance Exchanges!!!

A handful of Missouri Senators are working to block any progress in implementing the new federal law, obstructing even the private market coverage that includes important consumer protections.  Most importantly, Missouri has been planning and getting ready for a competitive health insurance marketplace (a health care exchange).  This marketplace is critical if we want access to health insurance with affordable premiums and good benefits.  The new marketplace will help many small businesses, individuals and families get quality health care coverage with better premium rates. And insurance companies will have to cover us even if we have pre-existing conditions.

Unfortunately several Senators who want to protect insurance companies at the expense of people are blocking this progress.  The next hearing in St. Charles is an important opportunity for health care consumers, community leaders and people of faith to make sure our voices are heard!

RSVP if you can attend the hearing to amy@mojwj.org

Also please RSVP if you have possible testimony (written or in person) to amy@mojwj.org

When:             Thursday, Nov. 10.  Plan to arrive by 10:00 am (hearing starts at 11 am)

Where:            Lindenwood University, Dunseth Auditorium, Harmon Hall 209 S. Kingshighway, St. Charles, MO 63301

Letters redux – righteous version

Emanuel Cleaver, Lacy Clay, missouri, Russ Carnahan, Voting rights

Missourians have been busy signing letters today – and at least some of Missouri’s Democratic pols are doing so in a good cause – protesting the new, reconfigured, better-than-ever, poll tax proxies that constitute the latest salvos in the newly energized GOP war on voting:

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) and Ranking Member of the House Administration Committee Robert Brady (PA-01) led a letter sent to Secretaries of State today urging them to oppose new state measures adopted over the last year that would make it harder for eligible voters to register or vote. The letter was signed by 196 House Democrats, including Hoyer and Brady.

Adding their names to the letter were all three of Missouri’s Democratic House members, Emanuel Cleaver (05), Russ Carnahan (03), and Lacy Clay (01).  Republicans signing the letter: zero, zip, nada. I guess they were just too scared by the ghost of Acorn or some other fictional agent of non-existent voter fraud. Or maybe they’re just afraid of their own constituents?

White House – petitions: almost something for everyone (September 28, 2011)

White House – petitions: definitely worth signing (September 29, 2011)

Today, at the White House site:

We demand a vapid, condescending, meaningless, politically safe response to this petition.

Since these petitions are ignored apart from an occasional patronizing and inane political statement amounting to nothing more than a condescending pat on the head, we the signers would enjoy having the illusion of success. Since no other outcome to this process seems possible, we demand that the White House immediately assign a junior staffer to compose a tame and vapid response to this petition, and never attempt to take any meaningful action on this or any other issue. We would also like a cookie.

Created: Nov 04, 2011

Issues: Civil Rights and Liberties, Government Reform

Signatures needed by December 04, 2011 to reach goal of 25,000 22,679

Total signatures on this petition 2,321

“…We would also like a cookie…”

We are a nation of smartasses. There is hope for the republic.

And signing a petition doesn’t do shit. Also, too.

Billy Long, Deficit reduction, Emanuel Cleaver, Jo Ann Emerson, missouri, supercommittee

Duane Graham, of the excellent The Erstwhile Conservative blog, debates whether or not Rep. “Ozark” Billy Long (R-7) deserves praise for joining fellow Missourian Jo Ann Emerson (R-8) and 40 other House Republicans in signing a bipartisan letter to the deficit Supercommittee which, among other things, suggests that revenues must be on the table as the group works its deficit-busting hocus-pocus. Graham concludes that no, indeed, Long does not deserve praise.

Remembering Long’s almost comical eagerness to let the United States government default last July during the debt-ceililng crisis, Graham notes that:

If someone who had been holding a hostage suddenly decided to let him go, would we be obliged to reward the hostage taker by giving him or her a medal of honor?  Republicans, including most of the signers of the letter, have been serial economic hostage takers. The fact that a few of them may have put the gun down and decided to try another way does not merit uncritical admiration.

He adds:

Then, I noticed that the letter did not include any specific proposals or any definition of what “revenues” meant, in terms of raising them….

Indeed, the devil is always in the details, and in that regard the brief letter is remarkably skimpy, simply declaring that:

To succeed, all options for mandatory and discretionary spending and revenues must be on the table. …

My question, though, is whether or not this detail-dwelling devil lets Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-5), who joined 60 other House Democrats in signing the same letter, off the hook. No actual cuts were specified, but Democrats who signed this letter have essentially signified a willingness to permit cuts to the pillars of the social safety net, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

In fact, it’s very hard to see how the vagueness of this letter gives Cleaver any wiggle room. We already know that the Democrats on the Super-Committee have been listing dangerously rightward, and it doesn’t seem like they need more encouragement to give up the game – they’re doing a good enough job already. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities characterizes their leaked plan as a near capitulation:

The Democratic plan contains substantially smaller revenue increases than those bipartisan proposals while, for example, containing significantly deeper cuts in Medicare and Medicaid than the Bowles-Simpson plan. The Democratic plan features a substantially higher ratio of spending cuts to revenue increases than any of the bipartisan plans.

This little bipartisan epistolary exercise has, as well, helped revive the false narrative about a non-existent deficit crisis when we were just beginning to succeed in shifting the emphasis to job-creation instead of more job-killing budget cuts. While vague about specifics, the letter reinforces the deficit crisis meme so wholeheartedly it even demands bigger deficit reductions than the committees’ $1.2 trillion mandate:

… In addition, we know from other bipartisan frameworks that a target of some $4 trillion in deficit reduction is necessary to stabilize our debt as a share of the economy and assure America’s fiscal well-being.

So there we have it. Is Cleaver demanding even more job-killing budget cuts and signaling a willingness to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and elderly? Or is he just trying to be a good, bipartisan fellow and go along to get something, anything, done. And isn’t the latter just as bad as the former?
