Another letter to the editor [subscription required], in today’s Sedalia Democrat:

What’s wrong with this press release dated February 28, 2013, posted on her official website and sent out to newspapers across the 4th Congressional District of Missouri?
From US Representative Vicky Hartzler, “View from the Capitol – Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler’s Newsletter for the Week of February 25 – March 1, 2013.” – “Hartzler Votes to Protect Women from Acts of Violence – Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) has voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)… “I am pleased to support efforts to protect all women in this country from domestic abuse and other forms of violence,” said Hartzler. “I supported legislation this week…..”
What’s wrong? She voted AGAINST it, not FOR it (see official Congressional voting record at http://www.govtrack.us). And if you are a female, or love one, she voted against you and your loved ones.
“I am pleased to support efforts to protect all women in this country from domestic abuse and other forms of violence,” said Hartzler. Uhmmm, apparently not.
From the editor of Warrensburg’s Daily Star-Journal (printed this week): “The Daily Star-Journal did not realize that what Hartzler’s release called “the Violence Against Women Act” in fact is not what is destined to become law. In the release, she makes no mention that she did not vote for what would become law and, coupled with the deadline timing, what conclusion could be drawn other than that she voted for what would become law?……I trusted…..I regret that error.”
Exactly.
Why would Hartzler, or anyone for that matter, vote NO on renewing the Violence Against Women Act? Shouldn’t all women of America be protected? And, why would her press release try to make you think that she voted to protect women when in fact she didn’t?
For the candidates with primary opponents this is the last weekend before the election on Tuesday to get some campaigning in.
Gary Grigsby, a Democratic party candidate in the 51st Legislative District, sets out for some last weekend before the primary campaigning.
Unlike many of the statewide campaigns and some state senate races with their very large media budgets – you’ve seen the television commercials – most House candidates work the phones, go door to door, put up signs, run a few newspaper ads and drop a few home grown mail pieces. The mail and other contacts are directed at frequent voters – those people who actually bother to show up and vote in off year, primary, and local issue elections. On Tuesday evening the candidates will find out if it all worked.
RELEASE: McCaskill Opens Kansas City Campaign Office at Event with Volunteers and Supporters
Office Will Serve As Hub of McCaskill’s Grassroots Campaign in Support of Missouri’s Middle Class Families
Kansas City, Mo. — Today, Senator Claire McCaskill joined supporters and volunteers at the opening of the Missouri Democratic Party’s Coordinated Campaign office in Kansas City. At the event, Claire thanked the crowd in attendance and delivered brief remarks about the clear choice in this campaign between a Senator who’s on the side of Missouri’s middle class families and three extreme candidates who are beholden to the Washington special interests.
“I know that TV ads won’t elect me and the millions of dollars in outside spending certainly won’t be what decides this race,” said McCaskill. “It’s all of you, here in this room today, when you’re knocking on doors and making phone calls, that will make the difference between now and November. It’s incredible to see so many of people here in Kansas City who are committed to working every day to ensure we win this thing in November.”
Today’s event was Claire’s first 2012 campaign stop in the Kansas City area, and the first local stop for the new McCaskill for Missouri RV, which will criss-cross Missouri over the next six months as Claire takes her message directly to voters.

We’re starting a new series here at Show Me Progress called “Who the Hell’s Going to Run Against..?” focusing on races where an officeholder who deserves to be turned out of office faces (as yet) no opposition. We’ll keep this feature up until the filing deadlines next year.
Our inaugural edition of WHGRA…? will focus on one of our favorite Republicans, Todd Akin from Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District (the Fightin’ 2nd!) Congressman Akin was elected in 2000 and has treated us to such gems as Davy Crockett’s Blackberry and a spurious defense of Bush’s Gulf Coast Wage Cut Inititiative. He’s been a rubber stamp for Bush in Congress, voting with Bush over 90% of the time. Unfortunately, Democrats haven’t fielded a good candidate in Akin’s district for years. (George “Boots” Weber, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry. You’re a sweet man, but you’ve tried and tried, and you’re just not going to beat Todd Akin.) Rumor was that Sam Page came close to challenging Akin in 2006, but opted not to at the last minute.
So in 2008, who the hell is going to run against Todd Akin? Tips, suggestions and rumors are welcome.
