Ann Wagner, Claire McCaskill, missouri, Neil Gorsuch, Senate race, Values

Word is that U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner (R-2) may be planning to challenge Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in next year’s midterm election. She’s also taking lots of heat for refusing to hold real, in-person town halls – and, no, hyper-managed tele-town halls don’t count. This fact explains her defensive response to Senator McCaskill’s recent jibe indirectly referencing Wagner’s now-notorious fear of being confronted by less than tame constituents in an environment that she cannot control. McCaskill – who spent the recent congressional recess on a listening tour of the state has plenty of standing on this issue. She’s held numerous Town Halls and listening sessions, even during the most virulent Tea Party period, which means that she’s earned the right to assert that folks who haven’t got what it takes stand up before angry constituents in an open forum and take responsibility for their actions aren’t fit to hold office.

The nettled Wagner promptly attempted to deflect McCaskill’s very palpable hit. She rushed to attack, peevishly declaring that, “I believe what makes you unfit for office is when you don’t represent Missouri values; and Sen. McCaskill’s vote against [Supreme Court] Justice Gorsuch last week told millions of Missourians that she simply doesn’t share their values.”

So what are these “Missouri values” of which Wagner speaks? Based on her performance over just the last few months, I’m willing to make an educated guess that Wagner’s own special Missouri values include the following:

— Shafting Missouri consumers, especially senior citizens: Wagner’s untiring efforts over the past few years to repeal the Obama era fiduciary rules and to weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) speak for themselves.

— Standing up for her big political donors: See the above point and then consider the piles of dollars that Wagner has raked in from the likes of Edward Jones and other big hitters in the financial services industry.

— Going along to get along, decency be dammed: During the campaign, Wagner made it clear that the stench of Donald Trump made her gag – until she realized that the red-meat folks she had to rely on to get elected thought he smelled like chateaubriand. Now she’s all smiles and compliance.

— Talking feminism while shafting women: Wagner makes a big deal about her efforts to fight sexual assault, rape and sex trafficking. But she voted against the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) – because it was too comprehensive. And issued a public statement that made it sound like she hadn’t. Hypocrites, we shall know ye by your words.

And then there’s Wagner’s vote for Neil Gorsuch a corporatist in originalist clothing– who is straight-out bad news for women and a disaster for working and middle class Missourians. If that vote represents Missouri values, it’s only because a lot of poor fools have been sold a bill of goods.

No wonder Country Club Ann is scared to face the rowdy hoi polloi in an unconstrained environment. She clearly knows nothing about our values.

Akin ain't doing so hot.

Adam Shriver, missouri, Politico, Sean Soendker Nicholson, Senate race, Todd Akin

Congrats to progressive bloggers Adam Shriver of St. Louis Activist Hub and Sean Soendker Nicholson, formerly of Fired Up!, currently with Progress Missouri. They posted screen shots of Akin’s campaign claiming on Twitter that he had been endorsed by Paul Ryan.  But oops, that wasn’t exactly so, and Politico picked up the story. Their piece pointed out that:

Todd Akin

“Akin’s campaign team is either not acting in good faith or inept – either of which will darken his chances at capturing the GOP nomination next August.

But this mistake is hardly the first for a campaign that was slow to organize out of the gate last spring.

Catanese used that statement to launch a critique of  Akin’s gaffes, including starting without a competent press person; overspending; and being forced to apologize for saying that “the heart of liberalism is really a hatred for God”.

I say these missteps are perfectly understandable on Akin’s part. He represents a district so profoundly dedicated to Republicans that he has never needed a competent press person. He just sequesters himself and keeps getting reelected. Indeed his refusal to have any contact with a–yechh!–liberal prompted Carl Peterson to observe recently that Akin has made himself so invisible that we may soon find a picture of him on a milk carton.

To win the primary, Akin will surely have to show himself in venues where the general public would be welcome. So far he seems to struggle with that concept.

It’s almost like they forgot the last 8 years

2010 Elections, Crossroads GPS, Fake Grassroots, Karl Rove, Robin Carnahan, Roy Blunt, Senate race

Nothing says Washington DC outsider like seven-term Congressman (and former Republican Whip) Roy Blunt! He’s such an outsider that there are dining establishments in DC that he has only been to once!

(Wonder how much of that debt is in stuff that he voted for, but wants you to forget about)

More under fold

No, they did not get that semissourian.com thing wrong (seeing as it’s a newspaper, you would think that).. they’re citing a USER SUBMITTED STORY titled “Robin Carnahan now likes TARP” from “Tim O’Toole”

Oh yeah, they also stretched “made a good case” into “would have voted for”. After all, if you admit something has a good case, you obviously support it. If only they taught logic to the O’Toole Family. Then the letter to the editor (errrrrrrr… I meant User-Submitted Story) quoted Rich Chrismer a few times.

Head on a pedestal. I need to get that photoshop program!

Also, how much was the bailout out of that $2.5 trillion? A trillion was added from Oct 2007 to Oct 2008 pre-bailout.

But then again, it’s OK if a Republican does it.

BTW, do they need more Robin headshots for their collection?

Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies? Nothing says Grassroots like anonymous fliers in millions of homes and a company headed by Karl Rove.

Granted, if they went with Crossroads Astroturf Policy Strategies, they would have an unfortunate acronym.

I wish people who talk about fiscal conservatism wouldn’t carpetbomb the voters in mailers. Yes, that means you Turfroots Mailer Factories. And tell Tim O’Toole that I said “Howdy!”

You make the ad, we sue you to protect our candidate

faux News, Robin Carnahan, Roy Blunt, Senate race

There’s a first time for everything, so Congrats to Robin Carnahan’s campaign on being sued by Faux News and here’s some “best of” from this situation.

“The Carnahan Ad is designed to make it appear as if Wallace – a trusted journalist – is instead speaking as a campaign operative,” the suit says.

1. They have trusted journalists at Faux News? That’s a pretty big claim to make in a lawsuit.

2. Obviously Faux personalities would not act as campaign operatives. Ask Mike Castle. They have a shock collar hidden to prevent that activity.

The suit, which says that Wallace won every major broadcast news award, claims the Carnahan ad “intruded upon Wallace’s private self-esteem and dignity; and caused him emotional or mental distress and suffering.”

If you’re gonna go for the lawsuit, go 100% and make up as much favorable stuff as possible. I hope that his kids weren’t made fun of at school too.

Fox’s suit asks the judge to yank the commercial from the air – its already been taken off YouTube — and order the Carnahan campaign to pay “reasonable attorneys’ fees” and undetermined monetary damages.

So Faux is off the bandwagon for tort “reform”?

Fox News is being represented by Lathrop and Gage in Kansas City.

No kidding?

Probably that a Republican would be getting sued by Faux for using a Faux news appearance to make their Democratic opponent look bad: -6% (they’d probably air the ad for free)

We wish Chris Wallace and Faux News a speedy recovery from effects of that ad existing. We know it’s been so hard. Since people never lie/distort on legal filings.

Kind of hard to argue the ad isn’t having an effect when Faux has to run defense for Roy Blunt. You don’t sue over ineffective ads.
