The Jackson County Democratic Committee held its annual Truman Gala in Kansas City last night. Senator Claire McCaskill (D) was the keynote speaker.

A portion of Senator McCaskill’s remarks in reference to Donald Trump, the presumptive republican party nominee for president:

Senator Claire McCaskill (D): ….We cannot let this risky and reckless reality TV star, who is an insult to all of the things we believe in, to ever set foot in the oval office. [applause]

We have to remember how much we all agree on. It’s about the Supreme Court. It’s whether we’re going to have a religious test to be able to come to the most welcoming nation on the planet. It’s whether we’ll be able to protect women’s rights. It’s whether we can actually raise the minimum wage. And protect your health care. It’s about the real scientific threat of climate change and doing everything we can to stop it.

I do think that when people make that final decision, when they walk in that ballot box and they have to mark that ballot, I do hope they will ask themselves, who do you want to represent our country on the world stage? Who do you want to be implementing change in this country? Who do you want to have the nuclear codes? A reality TV star that thinks this is just an exercise in marketing a brand? Someone who was hugging up on Putin and insulting Great Britain? Somebody who’s making it up as they go along?

Or someone who’s been tested? Someone with the strength and stability to understand the complicated world we live in? Someone who cares more about you than themselves? Someone who has a firm grasp on foreign policy and the dangerous consequences of behaving like a buffoon on the world stage? [applause]

The choice could not be more stark and our candidates come out way ahead in that calculus….
