Interesting. Eleven republicans have filed to challenge Claire McCaskill (D) for the U.S. Senate. A handful of those republicans have actually raised some money. Claire McCaskill has six challengers in her primary. Hope springs eternal in a few hearts, eh?

Four republicans have filed to challenge State Auditor Nicole Galloway (D) who doesn’t have a primary opponent. The fringe parties have managed to field candidates as well.

In the eight U.S. House of Representative races five of the incumbents (one Democrat and four republicans) managed to draw primary opponents and will be facing general election opponents – if they make it through those primaries. Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D – 5th Congressional District), Representative Sam Graves (r – 6th Congressional District), and Representative Jason Smith (r – 8th Congressional District) do not have primary opponents but will have general election opponents.

In sixteen of the seventeen State Senate races there are combinations of primary opponents for some incumbents, a number of fringe party candidates, and a Democratic Party – republican party matchup in the general election. In the 14t Senate District there are three Democratic candidates in the primary. Candidates from other parties did not file in that district.

Of 163 Legislative District (Missouri House of Representatives) races 141 have either general election opponents or primary challengers. Eleven districts have a single republican and no other opponents (4th, 40th, 56th, 58th, 64th, 122nd, 141st, 142nd, 148th, 154th, 158th) and another eleven districts have a single Democrat and no other opponents (22nd, 24th, 25th, 27th, 29th, 45th, 68th, 74th, 78th, 90th, 93rd).

It’s going to be a very, very interesting election year.

The dust has cleared from the first day of candidate filing for the 2014 election cycle. Via the Secretary of State:

First day of candidate filing summary from the Missouri Secretary of State.

You think those party ratios in the General Assembly are an indication of the power of incumbency? Just asking. If you do run you may lose. If you don’t file you can’t win. If no Democrats files in a district who will Democrats vote for? Just asking.

Remain calm, don’t hyperventilate yet. Candidate filing is open until March 25, 2014.

And in the 3rd Congressional District:

What are the odds of an “All in the Family” general election race?

It would have been cute if they had waited in line together. Or, could this be an indication of something? Just asking.

Several republican incumbent members of Congress who aren’t running for the U.S. Senate didn’t file on the first day. Any bets on surprise retirement announcements? We can hope, can’t we?

Eight candidates filed in the 2nd Congressional District. Three republicans filed in the 5th Congressional District for the opportunity to be humiliated by Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D) in November.

At this point there’s a gender gap between the two major parties when it comes to candidates running for Lieutenant Governor.

There’s no shortage of republicans willing to run for the Missouri House. Maybe it’s folks thinking, “I can do better.” Or, perish the thought, thinking, “I can be crazier.” Probably the latter.

A release from the Missouri Secretary of State’s office:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Thursday, February 23, 2012

[….]

Secretary of State’s Office Receives Tentative State Senate District Maps

Jefferson City, MO – Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan released the following statement after the State Senate Reapportionment Commission filed tentative district maps with her office:

“Absent any further action by the state legislature or Missouri courts, candidate filing will begin on Tuesday, February 28, as state law requires.

As it currently stands, citizens will be able to file to run for the congressional districts approved by the state legislature and the state House of Representative districts submitted by the Appellate Apportionment Commission in late 2011.

Although our office has received the tentative Senate maps, the process for finalizing those boundaries remains incomplete until the conclusion of a 15 day public comment period. Because of that, candidates who intend to file for state Senate may consider waiting until after the final map is filed with our office.

For anyone who chooses to file for state senate before the boundaries are finalized they may later withdraw, pay another filing fee and re-file in another district until filing closes on March 27 at 5:00 pm.”

It should also be noted that there are currently lawsuits pending challenging both the congressional district maps and state House of Representatives district maps.

I have a sneaking suspicion that our candidate filing stories are going to go a long way toward feeding the blog content beast in the coming month.
