Uh, yep, Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder (r) must’ve really upset at least one person.

Ironically (or maybe not), on the same day the United States Supreme Court eliminated [pdf] a hundred year practice of campaign finance restrictions on corporations in Montana.

Justice Stephen Breyer wrote today in his dissent:

….Montana’s experience, like considerable experience elsewhere since the Court’s decision in Citizens United, casts grave doubt on the Court’s supposition that independent expenditures do not corrupt or appear to do so….

It’s not so much about money per se, it’s really about the unlimited amounts. It’s their world, the rest of us only get to live in it.

SB806: My Disappointment with Sen. Brad Lager

Brad Lager, missouri, Missouri Teacher Tenure, SB806

(Teachers are the enemy? Not to most people. – promoted by Michael Bersin)

My home town paper, the Albany Ledger, recently ran a column by Senator Brad Lager titled “Quality Teachers Produce Quality State Results.” (I cannot provide a link to this column through the Ledger or through Sen. Lager’s Senate webpage.)

While I can’t argue with the headline, I’m not sure if quality state results are really at the heart of what I do as a teacher. None the less, the column was a typical constituent communication that relayed the Rhee-Sinquefield talking points about the abomination that is the Missouri Teacher Tenure Law of 1970.

I wasn’t too happy to read it, and have responded to the Senator.

I indicated that his column showed a lack of understanding of the Tenure Law. Let’s get this straight: Tenure does not guarantee a teacher a job. It guarantees due process. Administrators have the tools they need to remove poor teachers and replace them. If there is a fault to be found with the tenure process, it is with the carousel of administrators parading through most school districts, most for a short time, who kick the can down the road and do not process the necessary paperwork to move a poor teacher out of the district’s staff.

Short version: tenure makes the school district do its homework, too.

I am a tenured teacher, as is my wife, and as are several members of my immediate family. I work hard each day to provide my students with top-flight instruction and consider myself an asset to the teaching staff at my school. Through the years, have no doubt that without the protection of due process through tenure, ONE school board member with a bone to pick could have convinced three other board members to either reassign me or fire me. (Used to be two, until the law changed board memberships to seven.)

I asked the Senator, and I’ll ask you, gentle reader: Have you considered the impact on a community from a teacher with a long service history? Often, they are the most active, dependable people in their town. They own homes, contribute to the tax base, and are involved in church and civic organizations, all for the betterment of the community. They contribute a great deal to the identity of a community, and will often retire there. (My sixth-grade teacher tutored and mentored needy children in Albany well past retirement–almost up to the day of her passing, when in her late eighties.) My home town has an unbelievable number of retired teachers. They didn’t go there to retire, but the community embraced them and gave them the vote of confidence to stay and become a part of a larger family.

I’m not one of Sen. Lager’s constituents. I hope, however, readers of this blog site in NWMO will remind him that he owes his constituency the full story…and, it wouldn’t hurt to read the law before commenting on it.

2012 elections, Brad Lager, Lt. Governor, Peter Kinder

Brad Lager pulled in $733K in the 4th quarter. But if we go to a chart, we find that 2 donors made up over 2/3rds of that total (500K total), and that 17 donors made up 95% of that 733K. So the donors who didn’t give $5K or more donated $33K to Lager

Peter Kinder raised $118K in the Q4. So thanks to big money, an incumbent just got outraised by a 6:1 margin. Kinder has $1.3M on hand right now and still thinks he could run for Governor one day.

Former State Rep Judy Baker of Columbia is entering the Lt. Governor field. Presumably she knows fewer people who are willing or able to drop $250K on a campaign contribution.

Update: I dug into the 1K-5K (no donations were made between $2501 and $4999). So the 1-5K made up $28500 and donations under $1K made up $4770.44. The 1% (0.65%) to Brad Lager are donors who donated less than $1K to him in the last quarter.

In chart form-

Brad Lager’s (r) instant campaign for Lieutenant Governor, challenging incumbent Peter Kinder (r) in the primary, got another big money boost. Today, at the Missouri Ethics Commission:

C091011 12/30/2011 CITIZENS FOR BRAD LAGER Citizens for Will Kraus 612 SW Trail Park Circle Lees Summit MO 64081 12/29/2011 $25,000.00

[emphasis added]

That’s a total of $640,001.00 in one week from two individuals, two companies, and two committees. It’s good to be the kingmakers.

Pass the popcorn.

Is Dave Spence a new GOP contender for governor?

Brad Lager, Dave Spence, missouri

Given the general aura of disaster that permeates Peter Kinder’s run for Governor – even before he has declared himself a candidate – there seems to be good reason for the speculation that is popping up about other possible GOP contenders.  FiredUp!, for example, listed the possible reasons that would lead Brad Lager to run – noting that among the top ten reasons would be that “approximately zero Republicans want to run on a ticket with Peter Kinder.”

Some sources are suggesting another contender, a (really) dark horse, one Dave Spence. According to Berger’s Beat, Spence was recently in Washington to meet with members of the Republican Governors Association “about self-funding a primary against Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder.” Politico‘s David Catanese also speculates that Spence, whom he describes as  “a chief executive at a packaging company,” is considering a run.

The Small Business Monthly has this to say about Spence’s business career:

At the tender age of 25, Dave Spence acquired Alpha Con Plastics in 1985 and began the process of rebuilding the company.  Thanks to an SBA loan, he began a new era in the company, changing the name to Alpha Plastics. Today the company employs more than 400 people at five manufacturing facilities around the country.  Spence and his team have been honored with such awards as the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Missouri Chamber of commerce’s Fast Track Awards.

Over the years Spence has given back to the business community by continually sharing his experiences as an entrepreneur with up-and-coming owners.

As the recipient of an SBA loan that he used to get his business going, Spence ought to, at least, be able to figure out that government has a role to play in generating prosperity – which would be a novelty for the GOP right now.

However, in case that snippet doesn’t satisfy your desire to know more about Spence, the Entrepreneurship Institute presents Spence’s  proudest achievements as:

– Leading a balanced life with four young children, marriage and the demands of a fast growing business.

– One of the founding members of a charitable foundation that has raised over 1 million dollars to proved college scholarships to members of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at Mizzou.

– Not taking “no” for an answer during his career. It has meant that in spite of all the advice that was given, he was able to accomplish some things that seemed improbable.

– Leading an ethical business and personal life – yes it can be done!

One can only hope that Kinder does not, as Catanese suggests, decide to “pass the baton” to another candidate, since a primary between the Inspector Clouseau of Missouri politics and a GOP version of Dudley Do-Right ought to be a barrel of laughs.
