Toscanini called hers “a voice such as one hears once in a hundred years,” but while her race had represented no impediment to the career of the acclaimed contralto Marian Anderson in Europe, in the country of her birth the African-American woman was pointedly barred from performing at Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution in Jim Crow America.

All are created equal, indeed.

Interior Secretary Harold Ickes was so incensed and offended he did something about it…he arranged for Marian Anderson to sing to the nation, in front of the Great Emancipator, before a live audience of seventy-five thousand and a radio audience of millions, on Easter Sunday.

That was 75 years ago today, and an anniversary worthy of commemoration.

Later in the day there were a number of additional responses (including ubiquitous “fire Boehner/Obamacare” spam – interestingly, there is no Benghazi truther spam, yet). Some of the responses (we can’t really tell if they’re constituents) in the other comments are illustrative of the obsessions of the 27%:
