Kit Bond tries out the Republican Pickup Line (Update: So do Kinder and Hulshoff)

30 Thursday Oct 2008

Yesterday, I wrote about how unconcerned some of Missouri’s leading Republicans are about adhering to normal standards of decency in political discourse.  I was talking about rhetoric that employs outright lies, distortions and the amusingly, old-fashioned effort to label Obama’s rather modest tax plans “socialism.”  I noted that Senator Bond, though inclined to participate in his patrician way, had seemed to be less willing to wade knee-deep into the B.S.

Well, I’m here to tell you I was wrong!  Bond may be embarrassed by the crudeness of the smears, but he is undisturbed by the smell.

Today, while pimping Palin at her rally in Cape Giradeau, he trotted out an old Republican pickup line, one that has been  a surefire success with a lot of the electorate in the past.  Like a drunk siddling up to an lonely young thing at a bar, Bond began:

Just this past week, we saw what Barack Obama said about judges,” Bond said. “He said, ‘I’m tired of these judges who want to follow what the Founding Fathers said and the Constitution. I want judges who have a heart, have an empathy for the teenage mom, the minority, the gay, the disabled. We want them to show empathy. We want them to show compassion.’

OMG!  Empathy for the GAY!  Not to mention COMPASSION! But don’t worry, real, manly Republican men like Senator Bond will keep the gays and the compassionate out of our courts! Of course, he would never, ever, ever acknowledge the expertise that a Professor of constitutional law like Obama might bring to the question of original intent–after all, its not  really sexy, and the campaign trail, like a smoky barroom, is not the place for subtleties.

In his efforts to tie the word of the week, “redistribution,” to something that might possibly be considered a legitimate issue, like the judiciary, Bond tried a little sleight-of-hand, referring to:

… Obama’s comments to Joe The Plumber, saying the Democrat wants to redistribute wealth.

“He thinks this country should be a government-not a government of laws, but a government of compassion and empathy, not of laws,” Bond said.

This line of reasoning offers a major non sequitur, though.  To be honest, there is nothing to keep redistribution from becoming the law of the land.   In fact, one could say that it has been the law since the creation of the income tax in, I think, 1913.  If we want our laws to be fair–even toward Gays–and if we believe that we all do better together, then we can choose legislators who will so legislate.  And it is perfectly American and lawful to do so.

This fact is probably what explains Republican malaise this time around. The Republican pickup lines have failed to produce a happy-every-after result, and now, in the cold light of the morning after, the electorate may well be a little more careful.

But hey, that’s what happens when one tries to pretend that sleazy efforts to seduce amount to true love.  In general, cheap pick-up lines may be good for a one-night stand, but somebody ought to tell Bond that familiarity breeds contempt and Republicans may have to try to come up with something new.

UPDATE:  Bond had company.  Hulshoff and Kinder evidently brushed off their favorite lines as well.  Seems like more than a few metaphorical blowsy blondes were willing to buy what they had to say.  Accordingly, one supporter:

… , when asked what America would look like under a McCain presidency, said “Our children get to keep their Halloween candy,” in a barb aimed at Obama’s controversial “share the wealth” remarks.

To paraphrase somebody (Ringling?), “there’s a sucker born every minute.”

NRA Attacks Rep. Rebecca McClanahan with Fake Mailers

The NRA is sending out mailers in HD-2 targeting Rebecca McClanahan, which is odd because she’s gun-friendly and isn’t odd because she’s a Democrat. Whatever.

What’s really strange is that the NRA is sending them out on behalf of Thom Van Vleck and claiming that he’s the incumbent. They actually call on voters to re-elect Van Vleck, who has never held elective office of any kind, nor could have “consistently voted in favor of our Second Amendment rights”, as the mailer claims. In other words, the NRA is lying.

Missouri:

McCain – 50%

Obama – 48%

…The poll indicates another state Bush carried in 2004, Missouri, is basically a dead heat. McCain holds a 2-point lead in the poll, 50 percent to 48 percent, well within in the survey’s sampling error of 3.5 percentage points.

The poll was also expanded to include the major third party candidates, independent Ralph Nader, Libertarian candidate Bob Barr, and Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney. None of them are polling over 4 percent in any of the states CNN polled and none of them seem to be a factor in the outcome of the results in those five states other than Missouri, where Nader’s 4 percent showing could have an impact…

…The CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corp. poll was conducted Thursday through Tuesday, with…825 likely voter in Missouri…questioned by telephone.

In the 31st Senate District and the 121st Legislative District: inundated with mail

121st Legislative District, 31st Senate District, Chris Benjamin, David Pearce, Denny Hoskins, Jim Jackson, missouri

Chris Benjamin (D) and David Pearce (r – advocate of automotive deer hunting), the two candidates for the open seat in the 31st Senate District, have had groups sending a lot of mail.

A nice, positive, Democratic mail piece in support of a candidate with the right qualifications for tough times:

Working families paid for this positive piece.

Same day, same photo, nasty republican mail piece, just for contrast.:

Paid for by the Missouri republican state committee – the usual suspects.

Here’s the “B” side of the republican mailing:

Yeah, right. A shill for banking PACs and a rubber stamp for the republican leadership in the General Assembly is looking after the little guy. Give us a break. And you’d think he’d get a new tie at this stage of the campaign.

Meanwhile, in the 121st Legislative District race, we also received this positive piece on behalf of Jim Jackson (D) from Working Families. Hmmm. Another candidate with the right qualifications for tough times.

See, Denny Hoskins (r – “noun, verb, CPA”), how an independent mailer that’s positive can work for a candidate?

How do you know when you’ve got an incumbent on the run? When she goes negative on you the last week of the race. Oh sure, sure, her campaign people are all bravado, talking about how Kenny Biermann only came so close in HD17 in St. Charles (295 votes) in ’06 because she wasn’t expecting such a strong challenge. This year–make no mistake about it!–Vicki’s ready!!!!

Mmm-hmmm.

‘T’s not what I hear–from a little birdie named Tommy Roberts, the St. Charles Democratic Central Committee Chairman. Tommy says her ground game is “zero”. She’s got her husband delivering doorknockers this week. All one of him. Kenny, on the other hand, according to Tommy, has been knocking doors like a madman. He has people phonebanking for him every morning and two evenings a week. He’s had upwards of seventy volunteers at a time in the field on a weekend.

They’re getting the word out, not just about Biermann’s concerns regarding jobs, education, and health care, but also, lately, about Vicki charging expensive vacations to San Francisco, New Orleans, and Puerto Rico–$300 a night hotel rooms–to the taxpayers’ dime.

The HDCC even put together a snarky little video about her scammy ways. Biermann can’t afford to put info like that up on the tube, but he’s putting out mailers that explain it all.

So what’s a partyin’ girl to do? Go negative, of course. She’s sending out mailers claiming that Kenny voted, as a school board member, to raise property taxes by twenty percent.

Uh, Vicki? School board members don’t get to impose property tax raises without consulting the voters. That property tax hike was approved by 60 percent of the voters.

She’s also claiming that Kenny advocates raising Missouri taxes by $2.8 billion. She has not a shred of support for that one, just pulled it out of her hip pocket. And finally, Schneider says Biermann is endorsed by “radical left wing groups” because he’s pro-choice. Wrong again. Actually, Biermann is pro-life–though he does believe in protecting the life and health of the mother. What a dirty Commie.

So how does Kenny Biermann plan to fight these last minute lies? He doesn’t. When Tommy showed him the latest Schneider pile of crap, Kenny just giggled and said, “Boy, I really got her backed into a corner now.” And he left to go knock on doors. See, Biermann shares Tommy’s philosophy. Last spring, when Tommy saw his opponent in the aldermanic race in front of his house on the Saturday before the election, ready to canvass in Roberts’ own neighborhood with state rep Mark Parkinson, he knew he had the race won. Only desperate people show up to challenge an opponent that way.

Same with Vicki. She smells desperate.

Joplin Globe Endorses Barack Obama

Barack Obama, endorsement, Joplin Globe, missouri

Wow. A first since 1908 – the Joplin Globe endorses a Democrat.

Obama’s ability to transcend generational, racial and partisan divisions, his thoughtful approach to weighty issues and message of bipartisanship resonate with many Americans. There are some who see him as simply a gifted speaker, but his words inspire. We believe that Obama can make those words a reality – making “change” more than just a campaign slogan, but a launching point for a brighter future for all Americans.

We've got Obama mail!: positive (Missouri NEA) and negative (Missouri GOP)

All this stuff arrive in yesterday’s mail.

Teachers are the best, even though certain republicans think they should only get their reward in heaven:

The NEA and Missouri NEA really like Barack Obama and Jay Nixon. And their policies.

As for the Missouri GOP?

Oddball: Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don’t you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Ah, mail from the Missouri GOP:

Uh, John McCain wishes you had invested your Social Security and retirement in the stock market. How’d that be workin’ out for you now?

Something self-righteous and depressing, eh?

HD121/122: Questions for and Answers from Beth Grubb, McGhee, Jim Jackson, and Denny

29 Wednesday Oct 2008

As reported in the Warrensburg Star-Journal. Jim Jackson and Denny Hoskins got the same questions too

Differences.. differences.. lets get to them

Is higher education better off in Missouri now than four years ago?

GRUBB: No. Missouri ranks last in higher education funding – we are to the point where children from working families can no longer afford to send their children to college.

McGHEE: Yes.

“Hey, my buddies Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa Claus have kids who can handle all those loans they need to get through school” – M. McGhee

Would you vote to restore the cuts made to Medicaid in Missouri?

JACKSON: Yes. Restoring access for needy Missourians saves lives and reduces everyone’s insurance premiums. Taking health care away from children and the elderly is shameful.

HOSKINS: No. Having quality, affordable health care is essential for Missourians. If the old system would have continued, we would be facing a tremendous budget crisis in Missouri right now in the midst of a national economic slowdown.

Hey, he didn’t directly go to “We were about to go bankrupt in 2005” like he did last month at Know Your Vote. But quality health care is essential, granted.. throwing people off of it isn’t that big of a problem. It’s just “slowing” growth, right?

Would you vote to ban embryonic stem cell research?

JACKSON: No. If we participate in responsible research to end debilitating diseases with appropriate ethical controls, we can save lives and create new jobs.

HOSKINS: Yes. I believe embryonic stem cell research is not proven and other forms of research like adult stem cells could be used more effectively and do not harm the human embryo.

“As a CPA, I think that this whole embryonic stem cell research thing isn’t proven. We need a certified public accountant in Jefferson City in order to focus on the stem cells that Missouri-Right-to-life wants us to research. Also, sure the voters who passed Amendment 2 in every precinct of my district, but my experience as a certified public accountant helped me to find that most of them are on my side anyways. So there.”

Have present state policies worked to preserve/expand workers’ jobs?

GRUBB: No, state policies have contributed to the high unemployment rate in our state. This is one of the first jobs that the legislature must consider in order to help our economy.

McGHEE: Yes.

Just a coincidence that Missouri is losing more jobs than all 8 states bordering us combined, eh. Keep trudging forward, it’s due to work sometime!

Choices.. choices..
