Hi,

These are exciting and busy times, so I won’t spend much time on the preamble this week.  But for anyone interested in learning more about the important ballot initiatives that will be on our ballots Nov. 4th, I’ve included a little information at the end of the message.

This weeks events:

Sunday, Oct. 26 A TOWN CALLED KOZARAC

Fontbonne University will be hosting a screening of a film about the genocide in Bosnia with filmmaker and journalist Ed Harriman.  The film runs from 2 to 4 PM at the University Library, building 5 (on Wydown Blvd).   The facebook page is here.

Also Sunday:  UNCONVENTIONAL TOUR: MAKING WAVES

The St. Louis Community Arts and Media Project is hosting a screening of the film “Electile Dysfunction” with a Q & A from the filmmaker as well as speakers and hip hop performances.  You can find out more at this link.

Monday, Oct. 27 You know, I can’t really find anything for Monday.  That’s OK though, because we all know that you should be canvassing or phone-banking anyway.

Tuesday, Oct. 28.  PANEL ON FEMINIST POLITICS

Webster University is hosting a panel on Feminist Politics, with state reps Maria Chappelle-Nadal and Jeanette Mott-Oxford as well as Profs. Ann Geraghty-Rathert and Michael Erickson speaking.  It’s at the Sunnen Lounge from 6:30 to 9:30, and you can RSVP here.

Also Tuesday: AUTHOR OF BEYOND THE GREEN ZONE AT LEFT BANK BOOKS

Dahr Jamail, a journalist in Iraq, will be at Left Bank Books at 7 PM to discuss his book “Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq.”  Details are at the Left Bank Books website.

Wednesday, Oct. 29:  GREEN JOBS PRESS CONFERENCE

Join 1Sky as they ask the Presidential Candidates to promise to create green jobs.  1Sky will be delivering signed hard hats to the campaign offices and will be meeting up at 4811 Delmar Blvd (at the Missouri Career Center) at 2 PM.  Find out more here.

Also Wednesday: UNDERSTANDING ISLAM: SAY NO TO HATE

Last week I mentioned that Islamophobic author Daniel Pipes was in town to spread his unique brand of fear-mongering.  This week, there will be an academic and expert response to the “scholarship” of Mr. Pipes.  The event will be at  7 PM at the Friedman Lounge on the South 40 at WashU, and you can RSVP here.

Thursday, Oct. 30: MADELEINE ALBRIGHT SPEAKS

The former Secretary of State will be at Christ Church Cathedral (1210 Locus) speaking about her new “Memo to the President”.  The event starts at 7, and you can find out more at this link.

Friday, Oct 31: DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION AT WASHU

The school of social work is hosting a night of “celebration and consciousness-raising about issues that impact our immigrant communities.”  The festivities kick off at 6 PM and you can get the full scoop at the IOW calendar link.

Saturday, Nov 1: BLACK BEAR BAKERY BREAKFAST

St. Louis’s own worker-owned collective bakery is expanding its menu for November.  There are too many changes for me to list, so your best bet is to go down there for breakfast starting at around 9 AM.  Check out the Black Bear web site here.

BALLOT INITIATIVES INFO:

Proposition M (for St. Louis County residents) is a very small sales tax increase that is needed to preserve and hopefully expand the Metrolink system in St. Louis: Facebook link.  This is obviously crucial for St. Louis’s ability to be both an urban and an environmentally-friendly city.  Proposition C is also an important step for our environment, requiring that Missouri utilities start getting 15% of their electricity from renewable sources: Facebook link.  And Proposition B establishes a Missouri Quality Homecare Council, which is necessary both to improve workers and clients’ well-being and to allow workers to unionize in the future: more info here .  I don’t really know much about Proposition A, but you can read more about it here.

If anyone else has important information that people should know for the elections, please post it on the wall or the discussion boards.

Have a fun and meaningful week,

Adam
