I spotted this Mike McGhee advertisement on my way out of Higginsville. First off, that’s probably not Mrs. Claus (has Santa started emulating soon-to-be defeated US Rep. Tim Mahoney? I hope not!). Also, considering the possibility that McGhee got his arm twisted into another term, that sign is amusing.

I also spotted another “Dummy for McGhee” in an old-ish car on the way towards Business 13 in Higginsville. No word on if that dummy is the husband of the dummy riding with Santa Claus. (Watch out Santa!)

As for the event at the Higginsville Community Center..

It was pretty good in general and like any quality political event, there was free food. I won’t be too lengthy since I didn’t take notes or pictures of the event.

But the speakers included Rep. Ike Skelton, Attorney General Jay Nixon, Beth Grubb (D-Odessa), Joe Aull (D-Marshall), and Joe Sadeghi (D-Marshall).

Ike Skelton went over some remarks that were covered on here before (such as the friend of his who never saw America in such bad shape).

Jay Nixon had the longest speech of the day, basically going over various points of having a Governor with vision, but also giving pretty big props to Beth Grubb and Clint Zweifel. He basically said that the difference in Speakers is between the guys running things and Paul LeVota (Paul wasn’t mentioned by name, but we know he’s our guy for the job). He then noted some important points, including (1) vote, (2) drag young people out to vote, and I didn’t quite catch the third point, but going down the entire ballot to vote Democratic was also suggested.

Beth Grubb gave a speech going over her story (noting that people were telling her all sorts of things about her husband when he went to school).

Joe Aull noted that while he had some mixed memories of the speech location (seeing as Higginsville was a tough opponent for Joe and Lexington back in high school). He also told a tale of trying to find people to put signs up at 9am, finding one woman who was working over the night. She got home at 7, got to sleep at 8, and Joe woke her up at 9. She then suggested an alternate location for Joe’s yard sign. Any story ending with “If you see a pale blue Joe Aull sign sticking out of my pants, don’t it no mind” has to be quality (ok, I may have mixed up some words there). Joe will be the chairman of the Education Committee if we pick up 11 seats on November 4th.

Joe Sadeghi faced down a problem that daunts people who are speaking 5th at an event. He noted that the problems of the state were already noted, so he spent his speech talking about how Republican politicans are seeking to weaken the Constitution and how the Constitution is such an important foundation for our nation.

Ike Skelton closed out and told the story of meeting Thomas Hennings in 1949. Later on Hennings and Ike crossed paths in 1956 when Ike was running for Prosecutor and he was facing problems due people thinking he was too young for the job (Hennings noted Pitt the Younger was Prime Minister at 24). I forget if the hope for saying “Welcome to Democratic Lafayette County” after November 4th was before or after that story. Also, Ike noted the fun little oddity in our parts of voting Democratic for a team that includes a Nixon and an Ike.

So before they gave out the tickets to Mizzou v. K-State, County prosecutor Page Bellamy introduced County office holders in the audience. Then the tickets were given out, and it was time to talk, socialize, and depart (also there were hats for donations).
