writing about the new atrocious FISA bill that the Democrats are going to put into law, puts into words exactly what I’ve been thinking for almost a year.
Democrats are about to institutionalize a proposition that has been rejected since the Nuremberg Trials — namely, that individuals (or, more accurately, lobbyist-protected corporations) are free to break the law as long as they can claim afterwards that they were told by the Leader to do so. That’s the principle which the Democratic Party — following their standard pattern of having enough of their members join a virtually unanimous GOP while the Democratic leadership enables it all — is about to write into our laws.
This is what Claire did last August when she crossed over to join the Republicans on a FISA bill that the Demcoratic majority ostensibly rejected. And despite being a freshman senator who broke with her own party … nothing happened to her. Of course nothing happened to her – they wanted her to do it.
Someone should write this story. About how the Democratic leadership of the Senate sold us out while at the same time standing on the high ground saying “But WE didn’t want it, it was those REPUBLICANS who wanted it.”
Claire sold us out. But she did it, in my opinion with the full support of the Senate leadership. Which makes it even worse.
So the question is whether they think Claire is a ‘safe’ senator who can cross over and vote Republican again or if she’s taken enough grief that this time she’ll be able to stand with the Democrats and shout ‘shame’ at the Democrats who do cross over – with a great big wink.
What a sham.
People here wonder why I push to recognize progressives who are running in Missouri and not conservative or moderate Democrats. This is why. In the (admittedly very slim) hope that we can eventually elect someone to national office who wants to protect the rights of the people.
I was never under any illusion that Claire was progressive. But if I can find anyone who is, I will support them in the primary the next time she is up for re-election.
McCain will soon be visiting Springfield.
