[from the SLS Watch}

December 10–Barely 2 weeks after Mayor Francis Slay and Chief of Staff Jeff Rainford met with priests from the north and south deaneries to encourage them to open a Catholic charter school, the mayor’s executive assistant for education, Robbyn Wahby made the same pitch at a Jewish synagogue.  Wahby met with members of the Central Reform Congregation yesterday afternoon.

Having announced last month that he wants 30 charter schools to open over the next 10 years, the mayor now seems to have his staff engaged in a campaign to make sure it happens by seeding religious denominations with the idea of opening a school..

The congregation, which is in the early planning stages for a project devoted to the SLPS, is not interested in opening a charter school.

Meanwhile, The AKA Sorority, which founded the Ethel Hegeman Lyle Charter School is attempting to divorce from Imagine Schools, the for profit company which manages the school.  AKA has bought a new building at 1881 Pine where they intend to transfer the school next fall.  They are attempting to hire the teachers and attract the students away from the current EHL Academy on Jefferson.  They intend to use the same name.  No word from Imagine on their plans.
