A release from Teresa Hensley’s (D) 4th Congressional District campaign:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TERESA HENSLEY COMMENTS ON CONGRESSMAN TODD AKIN’S REMARKS REGARDING ‘LEGITIMATE RAPE’

Raymore, MO – Today, Cass County Prosecutor and congressional candidate in Missouri’s 4th Congressional district Teresa Hensley issued the following statement in response to Missouri Congressman Todd Akin’s remarks regarding what he called “legitimate rape.”

“As a prosecutor, I’ve helped protect victims of rape and I’ve made sure rapists go to jail and I know this: there is no grey area when it comes to sexual assault.  It is an act of violence, plain and simple.  And make no mistake; women can most assuredly become pregnant from it.

“Congressman Akin’s comments are embarrassing for him and for Missouri.  He represents our state on the House Science Committee, and yet, he believes that women can’t get pregnant from rape?  I find that appalling.

“Congresswoman Hartzler and I may not agree on much when it comes to policy, but surely on this issue we can set aside our differences and condemn Congressman Akin’s comments and urge him to apologize to women everywhere for his outrageous and offensive remarks.  If ever there was a time to transcend politics, this is it.”

2012, Claire McCaskill, gaffe, missouri, President Obama, Senate, Todd Akin

Somehow, we all knew that this was a republican campaign ship in search of an iceberg.

Today President Obama was asked about Representative Todd Akin’s comments:

Question: You’re, no doubt, aware of the comments that, uh, Missouri Senate candidate, uh, Republican Todd Akin made on rape and, and abortion. Uh, wondered if you think those, uh, views represent the views of the Republican Party in general. Uh, they’ve been denounced by your own rival and other Republicans. Uh, are they an outlier or are they representative?

President Obama: Well, let me, let me first of all say, uh, the views expressed were offensive.

Rape is rape.

And the idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and, uh, slicing, uh, what types of rape, uh, we’re talking about, uh, doesn’t make sense to the American people. Uh, and certainly doesn’t make sense to me.

So, uh, what I think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn’t have a bunch of politicians, uh, a majority of whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women.

And, uh, so, although these particular comments, uh, have, uh, have led Governor Romney and, uh, other Republicans to, to distance themselves, I think the underlying notion, uh, that we should be making decisions on behalf of women for their healthcare decisions, uh, or qualifying forcible rape versus non-forcible rape, I think those are broader issues, and that is a significant difference, uh, in approach between, uh, between me and the other party.

But I, I, I don’t think that they would agree with, uh, the Senator [Representative] from Missouri in terms of his statement, which was way out there, uh.

Question: Should he drop out of the race [crosstalk], you know?

President Obama: Uh, he was, uh, he was nominated by the Republicans in Missouri. I’ll let them sort that out.

Claire McCaskill, gaffe, Missouri Senate Race, Todd Akin

The roundly decried “legitimate rape comment” by Missouri US Senate hopeful Todd Akin, may have given incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill an early Christmas present. The national newswire is humming over Akin’s gaffe about how female victims of “legitimate rape” are evidently the benefactors of some mysterious physiological process that “shuts” down pregnancy.

The reality is, each year tens of thousands of women who are raped become pregnant. A 1996 study on rape-related pregnancies conducted by the Medical University of South Carolina, found that each year 32,101 women become pregnant as a consequence of being raped.

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan’s presidential campaign went into damage-control overdrive distancing them from Akin. “I have an entirely different view,” said Romney in a phone interview with National Review Online. “Congressman Akin’s comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong.”

The tide may be turning in the race for one of the most vulnerable Democratic Senate seats in Congress. In statewide polls in Missouri, first term Senator Claire McCaskill has consistently trailed Todd Akin before he made his rape comments. But political observers are now predicting the numbers to swing in McCaskill’s favor as the furor over the comments take their toll.

Republican U.S. Senator Scott Brown from Massachusetts released a statement Monday saying Akin, “should resign the nomination for US Senate in Missouri,” and that, “there is no place in our public discourse for this type of offensive thinking.”

Akin is no stranger to the realm of making such statements-he has actually tallied up quite a lengthy roster over the years.

“Global warming is highly suspect,” said Akin to a group of Tea Party activists in 2011. “And I have doubts about the constitutionality of Medicare.”

While running to oppose Rep. Akin in a 2008 Missouri congressional race, I was shocked to wake one April morning and see him waxing hyperbolic political rhetoric on CSPAN’s Washington Journal. He was repeating a universally discredited canard-summoning the image of an electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) nuclear weapon exploding over Kansas as a justification for “why we’re there” fighting overseas. Mind you, this was 2008-not during the drum-up for war in 2002-03.

In 2007 he said about the Iraq War: “Could you picture Davy Crockett at the Alamo looking at his Blackberry getting a message from Congress? Davy Crockett, we support you. The only thing is we are not going to send any troops.”

Everybody’s been guilty of misspeaking, suffering from foot-in-mouth disease, but Akin’s legitimate rape comment was not a flub or gaffe, per se. His rhetoric and statements over the years reveal an ideology that is anti-science and anti-government.

On Monday, Tim Mak for Politico penned a piece titled, “Left, right blogs unite: Todd Akin get out!” and laid out a series of right-wing commentators lambasting Akin:

“Usually, we’ll give our side something of a pass when it comes to outrageous statements,” wrote Rick Moran at the conservative PJ Tatler. “This isn’t a gaffe. It’s a nuclear bomb.” Moran went on to call Akin’s remarks “close to being the most ignorant and damaging statement I’ve ever heard a politician utter.” Influential conservative commentator Erick Erickson called Akin’s statements “inarticulate and rather dumb” on the conservative RedState blog. In addition, Reihan Salam, a National Review blogger, tweeted, “Todd Akin ought to step the heck down.”

Todd Akin will probably not step down. But at least for now, the reality of what is swirling around in Todd Akin’s head is out in the open for all to see.

gaffe, health insurance, Mitt Romney, you're fired

The putative republican nominee (according to the inside the beltway free cocktail weenie circuit), yesterday:

Mitt Romney (r): ….It also means that if you don’t like what they do you can fire them. I like being able to fire people that provide services to me. If, if, if I, you know, if someone doesn’t give me the good service I need I want to, I want to say, you know, that, that, I’m gonna go get somebody else to provide that service to me. And, and so that’s one thing I’d change….

It was about health insurance:

Romney: ‘I like being able to fire people who provide services to me’

By Philip Rucker

….Romney’s comment came in response to a question about health-care policy before more than 300 area business leaders. The former Massachusetts governor was referring to being able to change insurance companies….

Mitt Romney (r) caught a lot of flack for his statement. Here’s the real problem with it:

More Choices, Better Coverage: Health Insurance Reform for Rural America [pdf]

….And in many rural states, one insurance company dominates more than 80 percent of the market, meaning that families are often limited to a choice between only one or two insurers. As a result, some rural residents are unable to purchase a health insurance plan that is right for them….

[footnote] American Medical Association. (2008,2009). “Competition in health insurance: A comprehensive study of U.S. Markets: 2008 Update,” American Medical Association.

“….If, if, if I, you know, if someone doesn’t give me the good service I need I want to, I want to say, you know, that, that, I’m gonna go get somebody else to provide that service to me….”

Who do you “fire” when you only have one choice? A multimillionaire with the resources, the ability to travel, and multiple homes across the country would have plenty of choices. Those with far fewer resources, not so much.

It’s not a really difficult trick to understand that difference.

Then again, if a corporation is a person one could suppose it could be “fired”.
