Previously: Campaign Finance: doing your part to support the republican campaign consultant industrial complex (September 1, 2012)

And you’ll probably get the same end result. How much does it cost to run a statewide campaign for Secretary of State and who pays for it?

Yesterday, at the Missouri Ethics Commission:

C061132 08/31/2012 SCHOELLER FOR MISSOURI Rex Sinquefield 244 Bent Walnut Westphalia MO 65085 Retired Retired 8/31/2012 $250,000.00

[emphasis added]

That’s no typo.

Gee, did anyone think to ask twelve thousand five hundred little old ladies for a $20.00 campaign contribution? Oh, right, it’s a republican candidate and republicans have been making noise about ending Medicare as we know it and privatizing Social Security. Never mind.

Meanwhile, Jason Kander (D), is also raising contributions, but in smaller amounts – today, at the Missouri Ethics Commission::

C071012 09/01/2012 KANDER FOR MISSOURI Gori, Julian & Associates, P.C. 156 N. Main St. Edwardsville IL 62025 8/30/2012 $10,000.00

C071012 09/01/2012 KANDER FOR MISSOURI Eastern Missouri Laborers’ Education and Benevolent Fund 3450 Hollenberg Drive Bridgeton MO 63044 8/31/2012 $6,000.00

[emphasis added]

Finally, documentation of voter impersonation fraud in Missouri. Zero.

Jason Kander, missouri, Secretary of State, Shane Schoeller, voter ID, voter impersonation fraud

News21, “a cornerstone of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education” funded by The Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation recently released an investigative project on changes in election laws and voting rights:

Exhaustive Search Finds Little Voter Fraud

Despite the push for strict voter ID laws in a charged partisan and racial debate, the most exhaustive study ever of American election fraud reveals the rate is infinitesmal. Since 2000, a time when 146 million Americans were registered to vote, News21 found 10 cases of in-person voter fraud, which only photo ID laws would prevent. That would be about one case for every 15 million eligible voters.

Remember these exchanges involving Shane Schoeller (r), Jason Kander (D) (both now their respective party’s candidate for Secretary of State) and Show Me Progress?:

Rep. Jason Kander (D) in Higginsville (January 10, 2012)

….I’ve served on the Missouri Veterans Commission. I’ve been to a lot of veterans homes where you go in and you’ll talk to a veteran and you’ll find out that this is a person who was in Normandy. But, they haven’t driven in a long time, they don’t have a license. I think that if you were at, on the beach at Normandy you’ve earned the right to vote.  I don’t think we should put the [inaudible] that right….

Rep. Shane Schoeller (r): reading comprehension isn’t a strong point (January 12, 2012)

“….It is imperative that we protect your vote and work to halt voter fraud. By requiring that a photo identification be presented helps us promote the integrity of our election process…..”

Welcome to Rep. Shane Schoeller’s (r) world… (March 7, 2012)

…where veterans can’t vote.

[….]

“…I think that if you were at, on the beach at Normandy you’ve earned the right to vote. …”

Apparently not in Ohio and in other states where republicans want to suppress voter turnout.

[….]

Here it is. The number of voter impersonation fraud cases documented in Missouri since 2000 is exactly zero:

Missouri has 17 cases of alleged election fraud since 2000. By category, Third Party Organizations had the highest percentage of accused at 88 percent (15 cases), followed by Voter at 12 percent (2 cases). The most prevalent fraud was Registration Fraud at 88 percent (15 cases). The status of most cases was Pleaded at 71 percent (12 cases). Responses to requests for public records varied from state to state. Some state and local officials were quick to respond by sending available records; others failed to provide a single document.

Proposing legislation to take care of a nonexistent problem in Missouri? That doesn’t sound very conservative:

Flurry of Photo ID Laws Tied to Conservative Washington Group

By Ethan Magoc | News21

Published Aug. 2, 2012, 10:48 a.m.

A growing number of conservative Republican state legislators worked fervently during the past two years to enact laws requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls.

Lawmakers proposed 62 photo ID bills in 37 states in the 2011 and 2012 sessions, with multiple bills introduced in some states. Ten states have passed strict photo ID laws since 2008, though several may not be in effect in November because of legal challenges.

A News21 analysis found that more than half of the 62 bills were sponsored by members or conference attendees of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a Washington, D.C.-based, tax-exempt organization….

The goal for the right wingnuts, absent any other rational basis for this legislation, is to suppress the vote of their opposition’s traditional constituencies.

Shane Schoeller (r) is a partisan hack who evidently thinks almost everyone else in the State of Missouri is stupid. He doesn’t deserve to hold public office.

Lunch Discussions #145: The Crazification Factor

….John: Hey, Bush is now at 37% approval. I feel much less like Kevin McCarthy screaming in traffic. But I wonder what his base is —

Tyrone: 27%.

John: … you said that immmediately, and with some authority.

Tyrone: Obama vs. Alan Keyes. Keyes was from out of state, so you can eliminate any established political base; both candidates were black, so you can factor out racism; and Keyes was plainly, obviously, completely crazy. Batshit crazy. Head-trauma crazy. But 27% of the population of Illinois voted for him. They put party identification, personal prejudice, whatever ahead of rational judgement. Hell, even like 5% of Democrats voted for him. That’s crazy behaviour. I think you have to assume a 27% Crazification Factor in any population….

There are some interesting details.

Oh, this is very interesting. A few in-kind contributions:

[emphasis added]

Well, what do you know? An interlocking billboard strategery.

And Shane Schoeller’s (r) fundraising success was largely because of four people:

CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED – SUPPLEMENTAL

Today, one of the republican candidates for Secretary of State gets a really big contribution – reported at the Missouri Ethics Commission:

It’s definitely not an investment in promoting reading comprehension.

In small town west central Missouri, for the campaign of the republican Secretary of State candidate with reading comprehension issues:

An indication that the sign crew is inexperienced or that the campaign can’t afford a third fence post.

What, no party affiliation?

Ah, the wingnut seal of approval.

It’s in the fine print.

ALEC, missouri, Secretary of State.Jason Kander, Shane Schoeller, voter ID

Previously: Rep. Jason Kander (D) in Higginsville (January 10, 2012)

Here’s a tip – cutting and pasting a quote out of context may help you with your right wingnut base, but it isn’t going to make you look very good to everyone else.

Via Twitter:

@shaneschoeller Schoeller 4 SoS

Conservative Schoeller Applauds Kander’s Support of Voter ID [….] #MOSOS 3 hours ago

Not so fast.

And also, the press release from Representative Shane Schoeller’s (r) Secretary of State campaign:

Conservative Schoeller Applauds Kander’s Support of Voter ID

Jefferson City, Mo. – Conservative Shane Schoeller today applauded Jason Kander’s public declaration of support for Voter ID legislation. Schoeller recently filed House Bill 1104, which would require photo identification to vote and damper attempts of vote fraud.

Kander, speaking to the Lafayette County Democrats in Higginsville, and reported by showmeprogress.com, said, “Uh, one of the big issues they’ve tried to make, one of the big issues in this in this race is photo ID. My rule is real simple, photo ID, going to vote – if it, if a policy makes it easier to vote and harder to cheat, then I’ll be for it.”

Schoeller welcomes Kander’s support on this issue, “It is imperative that we protect your vote and work to halt voter fraud. By requiring that a photo identification be presented helps us promote the integrity of our election process.”

Schoeller, an outspoken conservative and the Speaker Pro Tem of the Missouri House of Representatives….

Why, they left stuff out. Go figure.

If someone prefaces a statement with:

Representative Jason Kinder (D): ….one of the big issues they’ve tried to make….

[emphasis added]

They’re telling you it’s somebody else’s “big issue”, not theirs. And when they follow that up with a personal story which vividly illustrates a serious problem with somebody else’s “big issue” they’re not endorsing it.

You see, requiring a veteran to jump through hoops does not qualify as “makes it easier to vote.”

For the individual this would be called reading comprehension. For the twenty something campaign gofer on wingnut welfare, the right wingnut candidate, our old media, and anyone else, it’s also called “context”.

On the up side, who’d have thought that Representative Shane Shoeller (r) reads Show Me Progress? Maybe if he keeps at it he might learn something. You know, like elderly people and veterans would really like to be able to vote in our elections without having a corporatist right wingnut front group‘s spam legislation [pdf] make it impossible for them to do so.

Think about that.

Here's a list of Rod Jetton & Associates clients

Brian Nieves, Chuck Gatschenberger, Don Ruzicka, Dwight Scharnhorst, Jason Smith, Rob Mayer, Rod Jetton, Shane Schoeller, Shelley Keeney, Steven Tilley, Sue Allen, Timothy Jones

Update 4: Quoted from ChadLivengood’s Twitter

“Rep. Sue Allen was on Rod Jetton’s clients list. But Rep. Allen says she just had Jetton send out invitations to the inaugural ball for her. / “I don’t know how my name got on the list. He wasn’t consulting with my campaign,” Rep. Sue Allen tells me.”

Of course the client list is exaggerated, J&A was trying to get more money. And the story is on Talking Points Memo.

Update 3: And Rod Jetton will be closing down his political consulting business in order “to deal with false allegations and spend time with his family” (his lawyers words). Not a stunner.

Update 2: Rod Jetton’s mug shot suggests that there were no combs in the Cole County Sheriff’s office last night. And that Rod didn’t pay Tom DeLay for consulting on how to look for a mugshot.

Update 1: RodJetton.org has gone offline, and a link to the Google cache of that page has been posted to replace that link in this post.

Former Representative Jetton is innocent until proven guilty. But realistically, his public influence amongst Jeff City Republicans is gonna vaporize. The Republican General Assembly may be arrogant and overconfident, but they’re not that stupid.

It’s for the purposes of posterity  and public knowledge that the Representatives who have paid Jetton & Associates in the year 2009 (and what they paid for) are displayed for you, the reader, and their constituents to know.

Sue Allen: $214, mailing

Chuck Gatschenberger: $160, invitations

Timothy Jones: $3599.95, consultant services, mailing costs

Shelley Keeney: $788.50, consulting

Rob Mayer: $734, consulting

Brian Nieves: $188, consultant

Don Ruzicka: $189, expenses

Dwight Scharnhorst: $1000, fundraising expenses

Shane Schoeller: $5405.69, fundraising event, mailing/postage, consulting

Jason Smith: $613, direct mail

Steven Tilley: $46806.67, lots of stuff (23 entries, so far)

Will the guy who could be the next Speaker of the Missouri House continue his hand-in-hand relationship with Jetton & Associates in the year 2010? You don’t need a political consultant to figure out the answer to that question.

It’ll be around a month from now before we figure out the 4th quarter spending from candidates to J&A. Will Floor Leader Tilley (R-da plane da plane) top $50K in payments to Jetton in 2009? Can’t wait to see.

Addendum: Reaction #1 is from Shane Schoeller:

“This is barely two hours old. I’m not going to be making any hasty decisions, These are serious allegations that have been made. And obviously, if it’s true, we’ll part paths.”
