Daily Star-Journal, Gene Lang, General Assembly, Ike Skelton, Letter to the Editor, missouri, republicans, Warrensburg

Former state representative Gene Lang (r) (who was defeated by Democratic challenger Deleta Williams in 1990) had a letter to the editor in today’s Warrensburg Daily Star-Journal:

With 20 years legislative experience, I cringe when I hear the term, “up or down.” The legislative process is a messy maze of rules that take divergent people and allow them to pass laws that reasonably govern all. True, you can’t turn the world upside down in a year, but most would agree that is a good thing. When the term up or down is used, someone is trying to force something down the throat of the taxpayer, and the reason for that is that it hasn’t been worked through properly, or even worse, it doesn’t carry the support of the voters…

Uh, I don’t recall a similar letter to the editor when republicans used the same terminology.

…There is plenty of health care reform that could, and should, be quickly agreed to by rational legislators, but those weren’t allowed to be pursued…

Uh, who said what? “If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.”

What color is the sky in your world? Rational republican legislators? I spent the day in Jefferson City today and listened to republican tenthers in debate. That ain’t rational.

…moderates like our own Ike Skelton…

Really? You didn’t get the memo, did you?

There’s no such thing as a “moderate” republican anymore.

“A Gentleman’s Agreement”?: a simple question

Aaron Podolefsky, anti-semitism, Benoit Wesly, Daily Star-Journal, Greg Hassler, letters, missouri, University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg

This is the forty-fourth post in an ongoing series as we file Missouri Sunshine Law (RSMo 610) requests and investigate the non-renewal of the contract of University of Central Missouri President Aaron Podolefsky. Links to previous coverage are below the fold. BG and MB

Everybody is getting into the act now that other media are actually covering this story. And by everybody we mean those ubiquitous commenters on-line (with some really interesting repetitious themes) and in letters to the editor. In today’s Warrensburg Daily Star Journal there were two letters to the editor. One, titled “UCM donor will be missed” and another, titled “Donor will not be missed” [with a broken link]. Let’s take a look at the second letter, from the dead trees edition of the paper:

I read the Jan. 28 Muleskinner articles regarding Benoit Wesly being disturbed over the alleged, anti-Semitic comment.

I must say that I feel that this is much ado about nothing….I do not see any reference to anti-Semitism in the comment.

Possibly Mr. Wesly is not privy to the first amendment, contained within the bill of rights, regarding freedom of speech. Or possibly he feels that his donations to UCM give him the authority to usurp this amendment….

….The proper way to withdraw his support would be to do it quietly, not with the fanfare he has generated….

….Our friends at Missouri Valley College need to be watching this closely. Mr. Wesly could decide to try and place pressure on them if they do something which would cause them to fall from his favor….

Uh, Missouri Valley College is a private institution. It is not governed by this article in the Missouri Constitution:

Missouri Constitution

Article IX

EDUCATION

Section 8

Prohibition of public aid for religious purposes and institutions.

Section 8. Neither the general assembly, nor any county, city, town, township, school district or other municipal corporation, shall ever make an appropriation or pay from any public fund whatever, anything in aid of any religious creed, church or sectarian purpose, or to help to support or sustain any private or public school, academy, seminary, college, university, or other institution of learning controlled by any religious creed, church or sectarian denomination whatever; nor shall any grant or donation of personal property or real estate ever be made by the state, or any county, city, town, or other municipal corporation, for any religious creed, church, or sectarian purpose whatever.

Greg Hassler, with a continued, and very public, association with the University of Central Missouri, stated on the air:

Greg Hassler: …The University of Central Missouri. End of an era.

Marion Woods: Uh, huh.

Greg Hassler: Aaron Podolefsky. Out. We’ve talked about it for a long time….

….The, the thing that really upset me, that kind of got [garbled] going originally was, for years there was a Christmas tree lit at Selmo Park. Remember that?

Marion Woods: Yep.

Greg Hassler: Drive by. He stopped that. I mean I think every religion should be able to celebrate, uh, in their own way, but, I mean we do live in Warrensburg, Missouri. This is America. You know. Let’s bring that back. How ’bout that?

Marion Woods: Wasn’t that the Christmas tree at the quadrangle?

Greg Hassler: No, there was also one at Selmo Park.

Marion Woods: Oh, okay.

Gregg Hassler: In the, in the yard, area there, so. I mean, I don’t know, it’s jus… It, it was a bad fit from the get go. It’s, it’s over…

[emphasis added]

So, the thing that got Greg Hassler, an individual with a clear association with the University, “started” with his upset was that the president of the University of Central Missouri, who is Jewish, did not decorate a tree on state property for sectarian purposes, which would have violated the establishment clause, and which was actually cut down five years before he got here. Greg Hassler injected religion into this. Those are his words. According to our letter writer, it’s no big deal?

….The proper way to withdraw his support would be to do it quietly, not with the fanfare he has generated….

What, Greg Hassler can say what he did (yes, he can) and how dare Benoit Wesly say anything about it in public? Only Greg Hassler can say what he wants in public? No one else?

If our letter writer had been paying attention he would have known that Benoit Wesly made inquiries about the situation months ago, originally out of the public eye (If it weren’t for that pesky Missouri Sunshine Law we wouldn’t know that part). The Board of Governors didn’t address the situation.

So, the simple question for our letter writer, who appears to be outraged by Benoit Wesly’s reaction, do you think what Greg Hassler said was accurate and appropriate? Just asking.

It’s so inconvenient when anyone shines light on any unpleasantness. Instead, we should all clap louder.

Denny Hoskins (r) in the 121st District: unhappy constituents write letters to the editor

121st Legislative District, Courtney Cole, Daily Star-Journal, Denny Hoskins, General Assembly, missouri, Warrensburg

Our previous coverage of Representative Denny Hoskin’s (r – noun, verb, CPA) property tax issue:

Denny Hoskins: Noun, Verb…CPA? (November 12, 2009)

I think I was way too nice to Denny Hoskins when I gave him the benefit of the doubt (November 13, 2009)

Denny Hoskins (r) in the 121st District: “You must have been misinformed.” (November 17, 2009)

Well, the Warrensburg Daily Star-Journal has been running a number of letters to the editor, the following from Monday, November 23rd (available on-line):

First he can’t pay, then pays next day

We are confused. The paper first says that Mr. Hoskins’ taxes are delinquent in the amount of nearly $20,000. … Then he suddenly finds the money to pay them [….]

There are a few more:

People struggle, but they pay taxes

Denny Hoskins all of the sudden came up with $20,000 in less than 24 hours to pay his delinquent taxes that he couldn’t pay for a year [….]

Astonishing news about taxes

[….] And to think: We elected this guy to guard our tax dollars in Jefferson City [….]

Thanks for making tax issue public

As a concerned citizen I am proud of the fact this tax issue was made public by you [….]

Then to come up with a lame excuse as Rep. Hoskins has made for non-payment of the tax is appalling [….]

CPA should make better choices

After reading and listening to the various articles and interviews regarding Rep. Denny Hoskins’ failure to pay his 2008 taxes, I am frustrated [….]

Interestingly, the Warrensburg Daily Star-Journal has not made an editorial and several other letters to the editor on the same subject (which were in a printed edition from last week) available on-line.

Missouri State Representative Cynthia Davis (r): a not so good, very bad month

Missouri State Representative Cynthia “Are there no prisons? Are there no work houses?” Davis (r) continues to have a not so good, very bad month. Some of our previous coverage:

Missouri State Rep. Cynthia Davis (r – Pluto): There IS such a thing as a free lunch

Missouri State Representative Cynthia Davis (r): the Mozart of cluelessness

An unsigned lead editorial in the dead trees edition of today’s Warrensburg Daily Star-Journal takes Representative Davis to task for her views on the summer meals program:

Rep. Davis shows no understanding of poor

Rep. Cynthia Davis, R-O’Fallon, in a newsletter states “hunger can be a positive motivator” for getting people to find jobs.

Davis must never have heard of Abraham Maslow. In 1943, he wrote “A Theory of Human Motivation.” He articulated ideas that “oft were thought but ne’er so well expressed.” In making his point about why humans behave in basic ways, he produced what became known as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. At the base of his pyramid are a person’s most basic needs – to breathe, to drink, to eat… To be plain, to eat is to live. Food is for life, not for motivation.

Davis no doubt did not realize that motivation is best described as an award from peers, a bonus from the boss, a kiss from a spouse, a hug from a child. She must have missed Maslow’s lessons while living in her nice suburban St. Louis home, far from those low-income people in the big cities who so need her to provide proper motivation…

…May Davis never know hunger, but if ever she does, she can dine on that foot in her mouth.

Ouch. That’s gonna leave a mark. Go. Read the whole thing.

Now, the question for Representative Denny Hoskins (r – noun, verb, CPA) is, since your home town paper stated, “…for Davis to head the House Special Standing Committee on Children and Families seems about as useful to those children and families as putting Trick “Pass Me the Blunt and Let Me Roll It” Daddy in charge of the state’s drug prevention programs…”, should she continue in that House leadership role? We’d certainly like to know if you endorse her views and her chairmanship of that committee, Representative Hoskins.
