Someone at OFA or the Obama12 campaign better already have the order placed with union shops for the buttons and bumper-stickers and t-shirts and baseball caps that are emblazoned with that phrase because that sums up what the next election is all about.
The President took a sharp turn toward populism today — and as I have said repeatedly, populism doesn’t just feel good — populism wins elections.
He is framing the debate and casting the GOP sycophants to plutocracy as the class warriors, favoring the rich on the backs of the poor and the middle class, while making John Boehner look like the Sheriff of Nottingham, whinging on about how Robin Hood is a class warrior, and basically calling Orange Julius either an idiot or a stooge.
Obama said he was encouraged to hear Boehner say that a “my-way-or-the-highway” approach won’t work, but he was dismayed to hear the Speaker say that increased revenues should be off the table.
“So the Speaker says we can’t have it my-way-or-the-highway, and then basically says my way or the highway,” Obama said. “That’s not smart. It’s not right.”

Obama framed his remarks with indirect attacks on the Republican presidential field, noting that his plan would cut $2 in spending for every $1 in new revenues.
White House and campaign officials have repeatedly harkened back to the GOP presidential debate where the candidates said they would not agree to a deal that included $10 in cuts for every $1 in revenues.
The president also took aim at Republicans who sign pledges not to raise taxes, saying “the only pledge that really matters is the pledge we take to defend the Constitution.”
“They should be called out,” Obama said. “They should have to defend that unfairness.”
Orange Julius quickly took a double shot of fortitude and issued a statement in which he dismissed the President as unserious and doubled down on the “rich create jobs” cannard. “This administration’s insistence on raising taxes on job creators and its reluctance to take the steps necessary to strengthen our entitlement programs are the reasons the president and I were not able to reach an agreement previously, and it is evident today that these barriers remain.”
Keep pluck’ that chicken, John. You keep pluckin’ that chicken all the way to November 4th of next year, because you are 180-degrees away from the American people on this one. Every. Single. Poll. — Even Rasmussen(!) — finds that what President Obama laid out this morning is exactly what about three-quarters of the American people want to see done to perk up the economy.
So please, republican’ts, I beg you…keep marching in the other direction, right over that big, looming cliff that’s hanging there just waiting to deceive you.
UPDATE: 1:30 p.m. cst
Okay, now I have seen the video, and the part I excerpted earlier from reports that wasn’t in the embargoed prepared text? He did indeed go off-script for that part.
If only it was enough to shut up the jackasses who say he can’t speak without a teleprompter.
What? A girl can dream, can’t she?
