“I come from a country that raises corn and cotton, cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I’m from Missouri, and you have got to show me.” – Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver, Democrat, Missouri

Nothing is ever fully lost.

Missouri is executing a response to an ongoing humanitarian crisis within her borders.  The devastation ensued upon Joplin, Missouri by Mother Nature has no words to describe the utter despair.  The recovery phase of the current emergency management operation is vital to saving lives and moving assets in place to clean up and rebuild.

An observation less disheartening than the loss, but nevertheless troubling, is the world is getting to know Missouri in the light of disaster.  What the world must know is regardless of the disaster and the loss, Joplin will recover.  In the coming months and years, the world will see the soul of Missouri in the overwhelming determination her citizens will muster as they come together to rebuild.

Missouri is more than simply the occasional natural disaster, entrance to the west, home of President Truman, caves, beautiful farmland and terrain, the birthplace of an eccentric writer.  The world will soon witness what Missouri truly is; they will soon see her soul, as her citizens come together as one for the betterment of the whole.

What I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt; Missourians will bury their dead, lick their wounds and conceive a community superior to the one before.  Over 2,000 homes, businesses and schools were lost.  4,000 will be built.  Dignity will double in recovery.  Humanity will flourish through charity.  Prosperity will continue indefinitely.  Missouri will grow from grief.  Joplin will rebuild.

Missouri is made up of more than her past and the occasional natural disaster.  Missouri is and always will be America’s soul.

Joplin, Push Forward!
