Remember J. Wellington Wimpy from the old Popeye comic strips?  He loved hamburgers, but was too cheap to pay for them himself.  His effort to scam all and sundry into paying for the burgers became his hallmark: “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today”.

Somehow when you substitute AmerenUE for Wimpy and change the refrain to “I’ll gladly save you money  in the future for a power plant today,” it just isn’t as amusing.  Once a scam, always a scam and it’s no fun when you’re the mark.

As for other comics, the old Beetle Baily strip, which has been treading stale water over the last twenty years at least, somehow managed a piece of what is arguably edgy political commentary today (Apr. 14). Hard to read it and not think of the attitude voiced by the current Democratic ascendancy toward the illegal activities presided over by the last president.  When even Beetle Baily gets it, one wonders just what that means about some of our more clueless leaders.
