Rules comm killed Autism bill HB 357 on party line vote. All R’s voting to kill it. Today is National Autism Day. What a celebration.

HB 357: Requires health carriers issuing or renewing a health plan to provide individuals younger than 21 years of age insurance coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders

The thing is that 357 (and HB 298) were sponsored by Suburban Republicans (Jeff Grisamore and Dwight Scharnhorst). So basically the far right gets to play gate-keeper on a bill that would pass easily and help people out in this state. It’s not news when they do it to a Democrats bill, but when they’re doing it to people on their own side.

The House did pass HB 525, which appears to be a bit more mild than 357/298. So they’re covering their litter-box mess with another bill (it’s that two-step again, isn’t it?).

Let me close with a shout out to the Republican members of the Rules Committee.. Michael Parson, Stanley Cox, Kenneth Jones, Brian Munzlinger, Bryan Pratt, Steven Tilley, and Larry Wilson.. may you all find hostile electorates and tough opposition in the future (although half of them are out of the house after this term, IIRC).
