At a point of time when the Missouri unemployment rate has risen to a record 8.3%, and job creation through the injection of stimulus money remains as one of the last fortitudes to revive the economy, Republican Missouri House Legislators seem to think otherwise. The House Budget Committee under Chair Allen Icent’s leadership has decided to forfeit the federal funds for the time being, thereby, sustaining severe cuts in health, mental health and social services sector but also gladly embracing the loss of as many as 3,700 Missouri jobs in its immediate future. It is also believed that due to these budgetary cuts 70,000 Missourians will lose services or have them significantly reduced in the same sectors. Unfortunately, the very purpose of the federal funds is to prevent cuts during a recession; hence, it is unlikely that in two years when the funds are gone the cuts would be reversed.
