…and sucks Claire McCaskill (D – Missouri) in with him.
As the incomparable Digby wryly observes:
…It is after all, written into the Democratic Party bylaws that conservative Democratic Senators must put the new Dem president in his place and make sure that no one in the country ever get the idea that he is really in charge…

An influential Senate Democrat said Friday that it’s unclear whether President Obama’s $819 economic stimulus bill will win enough support to pass in the Senate.
“I don’t even know how many Democrats will vote for it, as it stands today,” Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., told FOX News…
Okay, here’s a new rule for Democrats – you can’t participate in an exercise which allows someone to go on the air at the propaganda arm of the rnc (the Faux News Channel) and trash a Democratic president’s economic stimulus plan when you voted for a republican president’s bailout of their Wall Street buddies.
Shame on you Claire McCaskill for helping to provide this fodder to right wingnuts. If you were going to attend the meeting (not a problem) you should have at least elicited a promise that your blowhard colleague wouldn’t go directly from the meeting to spout off for Roger Ailes’ propaganda network.
So much for working behind the scenes.
Uh, you do know that Ike Skelton (D – MO4) voted for the House version, right?
since that will ‘stimulate’ our economy sometime next year when people pay taxes and realize they have more money than they expected.
Granted, that only applies if they have jobs. But..
living down to our expectations.
For all those people who thought she’d be a big rah rah Obama supporter, here’s proof that she’s not changed.
Nothing like having our very own DINO in the Senate. Better than (no)Talent but that’s not much of an endorsement.
I’m not a fan of McCaskill, but I’m not willing to condemn her yet. This is a report from Fox News on Ben Nelson reaching out to Claire, not a statement from McCaskill on the stimulus.
It will be interesting to see which side of McCaskill wins out here – the loyal ally of Obama or the concern troll on spending.
between going to school or not/dropping out for many. Stupid. Do Nelson and the Blue Dogs want all the students on the brink to join the ranks of the unemployed? Cutting $18-million for the NIH? Even more stupid or should I say stupider. The NIH is the largest funder of research conducted on college and university campuses. Research that is critical to national security and public health. It has been flat funded at best over the last eight years. Research grants are what fund the degree granting science departments at colleges and universities. Schools don’t cut these programs in hard times, they will continue to pay for themselves and limp along, they cut liberal arts programs. Really, one of the best things the stimulus package could do is to keep students in school and make higher education more affordable. There should be even more funding for higher education and research. The cost of college attendance is one of largest expenditures in families budgets by far – research has shown that families are willing to designate as much as 60% of their budgets to higher education – people obviously recognize the value. Think of the WWII GI Bill, by the way the new GI Bill is really great, yeah it was an investment in the nations future, it was also intended to gradually return the troops to the work force – idle hands and the devil and all that ya know. States are already cutting higher-education budgets. Really do the Blue Dogs want to swell the ranks of the unemployed?
