A recent white paper study by John Holahan and Linda Blumberg which is currently posted at the PNHP blog site http://www.pnhp.org/blog/ tells us why
Their claim is that the Democratic proposals of competing public and private plans is no panacea for our health care woes, in fact, it is not even a placebo. In order to compete with the private insurers, the pubic plan will need to adopt the same ruthless tactics of the private insurers. The cost savings associated with these proposals are mythical at best and Americans will simply see an added tax burden to subsidize insurance companies who have been forced to forego cherrypicking and enrollment requirements. Insurance won’t lose, the American taxpayer will. Let us not forget, Insurance companies are not in the business of providing health care, they are in the business of making money.
HR 676 is the reform this country needs. We scream about the “Wall Street Bailout” yet we are curiously silent on the perpetual “bailout” that exists for the benefit of health care insurers. Reform plans which simply tweak the edges of our peculiar system of medical apartheid are not a solution. The death rate as a result of this benevolence is currently at 18 million per year.
The politicians that have studied analyses of our healthcare problems and growing crisis with both coverage & costs know that decades of studies have recommended a nonprofit single payer system such as HR676. But this bill won’t get to a floor vote & has only ~90 cosponsors ( including only Cong. Clay & Cleaver in MO) after ~6yrs. Officials think it’s political suicide to confront the power of the insurance & medical industries.
Therefore, only grassroots constituent pressure on Congressmen will get Medicare for All HR676 passed. That requires ~270 in the House. Call your Congressman then email or call the Healthcare for All MO group & join our coordinated effort to pressure the MO delegation to give us real healthcare reform with costs savings for visits, drugs, hospitals & other services.
